Brandon Peters POSBANG

Submitted by Hold This L on

With only 18 days until kickoff, and with the BTN bus stopping by practice yesterday, I wanted to start a positive BP thread.

I have always felt that Peters had a legitimate shot at starting since Shea transferred. He knows the offense, even if Jim is changing is up a bit, he has developed relationships with his teammates over two offseasons, he was able to play mistake-free/conservative in the regular season, and he wasn’t shy to competition.

From the way it sounds, Shea hasn’t shown he’s the clear cut option over Brandon. He brings that improvisational skill, ability to extend plays or create. Brandon is the more talented passer, IMO, and has the prototype build with above average athleticism for the position. He was thrown into the fire last year and did the best he could with what he was dealing with. The bowl game, well, the fumble in the red zone and complete brain farts on D probably, in his mind, forced him to take chances. They didn’t pan out.

A huge part of Brandon is confidence. There are some guys like Shea who have a cockiness to them, and that’s not a bad thing at all. They won’t get fazed by anything and they believe in their abilities. Guys like Brandon need coaches who trust them and don’t micro manage. I believe if he’s truly given a chance and he proves out of camp that he’s the best QB on the team, he can lead us to a national championship.

"Wasn’t trying to argue with people, yet felt the need to defend myself with the way people reacted."

It got "nasty" because you spent so much time trying to defend yourself, which is always the way negbangs get started.

The basic problem is that posbangs around here are normally reserved for people who actually accomplish something noteworthy. For a variety of reasons—many of which are not his fault—Peters has not yet come close to doing that. If he ends up playing and leads Michigan to victory over MSU or PSU or Wisconsin or OSU, posbangs will be in order.

It was negative from the start and I was defending myself. Look I regret the thread. I didn’t see the need for people to trash the post. It should have been “QBs not named Shea POSBang” to get people excited about the talent we have and how anyone could lead us to a title. I feel like people misconstrued my original post. I didn’t understand the initial responses on here so I defended myself, which I regret. I think we’d all do the same if people were going at your opinion or attempt to be positive. Based on the reception, It was like I was defending Zach smith.

"I didn’t see the need for people to trash the post."

You've only been here about a year, so you're a relative newbie. If you spend as much time here over the years as I have, what becomes clear is that by the end of the summer, the MGoFanbase is like a huge pack of extremely nervous, hypersensitive, semi-starved dogs who are as likely to attack each other as they are true outsiders. Throw them the most insignificant, meaningless morsel of "information" in the form of Gerry DiNardo BTN argle-bargle and the response is a pack-wide slobbering frenzy; report on a few minutes of practice from a highway overpass like a hobo and it quickly descends into fantasies involving testicles and faces.

This doesn't mean you shouldn't voice your opinion, but don't expect total rationality in the responses. It's not the nature of the beast around here.

fair enough. I also heard that the elite 11 ceo said peters was an nfl type talent and he’s right there with Shea talent wise, FWIW. Not sure when the quote is from though. Dinardo was just confirming what I already believed to be the case: it’s not a landslide for Shea. Again, not a bad thing. It’s good we have 3-4 solid QBs battling.

Truer words have never been spoken. I regret that Hold the L regrets the thread.  He shouldn't blame himself for others' mob mentality.  I agree that posbangs are usually when something positive happens, but the reality is if this was a "Shea Patterson is going to kick ass this season POSBANG" post it would have ended much differently, because it is consistent with the majority opinion.

We need more people to not be hypersensitive to opposing points of view.

Also need more people to realize their words are read by players.  If you are Brandon Peters, and you read this thread, does it motivate you to try harder at practice?  To learn that if you win the job, the fanbase will consider it a "total disappointment"?  It might, but at minimum it probably makes you angry and ultimately serves as a distraction.

Shea has already been told he is the starter. You won’t be told, again, who will start until he trots out on Sept 1st

Peters got a raw deal at Michigan. You guys can make all the excuses you want against him and for Jim. Kid has a ton of talent.

Raw deal???  This attitude is a symptom from a losing fanbase... rather, one of a winning fanbase is that he being a scholarship QB here he has the opportunity to play, and had earned play last year, and he did... then fell flat vs SC..... he was young.. timing sucks.. now he has to win the job back....

You nailed it on your second to last sentence...and I agree that he has the goods to be an NC caliber QB. Actually, I believe Michigan has 3 QBs who are NC caliber right now...too much to ask of Milton at this time. This year is on the coaches like no other-they have to figure it out and be the catalysts for the players to figure it out. Instill the information then free up those kids to go play their hearts out.

I think you are equating all criticism to complete negativity.  Peters got his first shot at an unfortunate time.  The team was 1-2 in the last 3 games with a very fortunate win in OT over Indiana.  I believe if Peters would have shown some more elite plays during his 4 games that he played, there may be a different tune.  I don't think that is a stretch either considering you are pretty much referring him to an elite talent.  Instead, IMO he just kept the team moving forward pretty similar to what most of the previous games were played.  I would even say that OKorn made just as many above average plays as Peters.  Throw in the bowl game performance, and you have a fan base that is not that excited.  Fair or not, it is reality and what I would say again was bad timing for Peters since the team was extremely young and our O-Line play was atrocious for Michigan standards.  Compound that with the news (after a disappointing finish to a season) that a highly recruited qb is interested in Michigan.  Fans regain their excitement.  I honestly was looking for anything to get me excited after last year.  So I would say that as much as Peters timing was unfortunate, Shea's timing to come here was probably as perfect as it could be for an elite QB to come to Michigan.  Peters will be the backup this year and I expect him to look more confident and under control when he gets his snaps, but Shea is going to be the starter.

I mostly like the OP, and completely agree with the sentiment. I feel we finally have several very good quarterback options. I hope we are ahead enough in many games that several QB's get good looks.

Re-watching the Amazon series all or nothing (because its August), I was reliving the pain of the lack of a consistent reliable quarterback. While obviously the OL was part of that, it's pretty obvious the coaching staff didn't feel Peters had enough of the game plan down to put him in until well into the season. I'm going to speculate that he probably still wasn't fully ready, but what real choice did they have? I don't get the feeling that anyone on the boards or in real life, talking about Michigan, has given the impression that they were underwhelmed by Peters. At that point the OL issues were well known, and many people didn't even know that we had a 3rd quarterback option, so they were pleasantly surprised. Additionally I think it's hard for a 3rd string quarterback to take the horns and a large leadership position, it doesn't feel as natural as the starting quarterback, even if that starter is a soph.

My take is that Shea is a better scrapper, fast tempo qb, and throws the better fade and short/quick release, and Peters might have better long range consistency.

As an alternative to posbang Peters, I prefer to posbang the fact that we have a genuine reason to be excited about an incoming experienced QB that brings (per the OP) the improvisational extra that we've been missing for years (Denard was just plain dangerous with his feet, just a few great throws from improv). You could also posbang our depth at QB which should set us up for less sharp drop-offs when the starter moves on to the next level.

Peters could be a great QB, but from all accounts, it'll be seen next year.

Harbaugh and the staff will select the best QB that will lead them to wins... not sure why this is being questioned at all with the discussion of 'getting a fair chance'...

from the fans perspective, i am not sure if it matters - BP got a fair shot during the USC game and looked not so good. Fans are fickle and they tend to put a lot of emphasis on the last performance they see.

Spring game? BP=future star. Bowl Game? BP=bust.

at the end of the day, what fans think about Peters means nothing: if he plays well when called upon, fans will love him. IF Patterson does terrible, fans will be clamoring for him...

Everything that has been said by insiders about Patterson is that he is playing exceptionally well, throws a fantastic deep ball, keeps plays alive with his legs and has swagger...

I like Peters, but would be shocked if he's able to beat out Patterson...who wasn't simply the top ranked qb, but also the 4 ranked player overall, whereas Peters was 61st

From what I hear/read, McCaffrey has passed Peters.  The starting job is between Shea and McCaffrey.

Last year I made a post about QB's, will never do it again on this board:)

I just don’t see a route for BP to win the starting job this year. Regarding his ability:

The good

- size

- he throws a good ball

- has the ability to put nice touch on his throws

 The bad

- aura of disinterest

- lack of leadership

- just my opinion, but I think he’s soft

The one thing that seems to be lost in these quarterback comparisons are turnovers.

Shea had 9 interceptions in 260 attempts which averaged out to over 1 INT per game. That rate needs to come down.

Peters had 2 interceptions in 108 attempts in 5 games.

All I hope for coming out of fall camp is that 1 QB is selected as "the QB" (giving the backup garbage time is fine, splitting halves never seems to work out well) and that the QB selected takes care of the football.

I trust Jim Harbaugh more than any other coach in the country. He has been nothing short of magnificent at every school or organization he has been with so far. Stanford was nothing in football when he got there, he built that school into a powerful program. San Francisco was absolute garbage, turned that around the 1st year. He's going to do the same thing at Michigan and I believe that started when he got here, we just haven't gotten where we want to be yet and a lot of people are impatient and want a national championship yesterday. Whichever qb he puts out there against ND will be THEE best guy for the job, I believe it will be Shea. If it turned out to be BP I trust that Harbaugh is putting the winner of the job out there and I'll support whoever it is. Go Blue!!!

I listened to the BTN guys. They basically said it would depend on what style of offense Michigan was going to run. They didn’t seem to think, after watching practice, that Shea had separated himself. I don’t think that’s a knock on Shea at all. It’s good that there’s competition. Hence the whole purpose of this thread which I regret.

Don't regret it.

It was a valiant attempt to offer some positive observations about a young player who was thrown into the line of fire before he was fully ready, but deserves another chance to be at least considered for the job of QB. And if the hits he took shook his confidence, he has my full sympathy. With more experience and success on the field, it should rebuild. Tom Brady didn't win the starting job until his final year, and even then it was a close competition.

I suppose a range of attitudes is only to be expected on a blog, but some of the negativity is harsh (including recruits' lack of stars). I hope that the coaches offer the players advice on dealing with criticism from the fans. It might undermine the self-confidence of players who are still very young and probably unused to such criticism after a successful HS career. It could be used as encouragement to improve, to prove that the cynics are wrong, but it might be wiser not to look at it at all. Particularly if one is feeling depressed.

Go Blue. We want to win and  believe this team can deliver. But not at any cost (think OSU, MSU, Maryland, . . . ).

This thread wasn’t to be negative about Shea. It was to get people excited about the fact that we have multiple qbs to lead us to a title. I just think a lot of people handed Shea the job before camp even started, I wanted to give BP some love, and all the other QBs for that matter, and just appreciate their talent as well.

I'll walk over to the practice field and get a ladder and watch over the fence and see who is getting the most snaps and end this debate today:)

Over/Under on how many throws it takes Harbaugh to knock me off?

I love all of our players and I saw lots of promise in Brandon’s game especially against Wisconsin, until that unforgettable fumble on the 2 yard line!

My take is that Brandon has continued to make incremental improvements, however Shea is the starter.  JH doesn't want to ruin anyone's confidence so he probably won't announce a starter until 1-2 weeks before ND if at all.  I agree Brandon is not as confident as Shea.  I hope he sticks around and plays next year assuming Shea is gone, but I see him as our backup QB this season.  Based on the previous 3 years we will need a quality backup, so hopefully he keeps his head in the game and realizes he will get chances.  But, right now everything points to Shea being the starter and Brandon #2.

As much as I want Peters to be good . . . I think he's a bit of a head case.  The moment he loses a bit of confidence it all falls apart.  This was most evident in the South Carolina game ... complete collapse.

If BP isn't third string this year, that bodes very poorly for us.  Hopefully Patterson and McCaffrey beat him soundly.

Brandon Peters is probably on a track to transferring, not to starting.

Here's why I think so.

I like Brandon Peters, a lot. His passes look excellent. He's highly developed in throwing and accuracy. And he's a really nice person. But... Shea Patterson, and Dylan McCaffrey, I think, are better players than him.

Transfers happen. Certainly, we've seen that this off season-#6, #1, #13 DOOOOOOM!

The QB room can't hold both Dylan McCaffrey and Brandon Peters. Both can be a starter at many college teams. Neither should sit on the bench for the rest of their career at Michigan, watching the other play, after Shea Patterson is gone from Michigan. Both could start NEXT YEAR. And listening to the way Jim Harbaugh, also Don Brown, speak of Dylan McCaffrey, the coloring in their voices, hints to me that Dylan McCaffrey is the future. I think they both see great potential in him--not that they don't see great potential in Brandon Peters. But I think they both are inclined toward playing, and developing, Dylan McCaffrey. One, or the other, will have to be the starter, and play full time. These tough choices have to be made.

In the interest of their career, one of them is going to have to transfer out. The one not on track to start next year will need to transfer out--at some point. And which one that is will likely be evident by the end of Fall Camp this year---if not to people outside the stadium, not seeing the practices, and only to the players and coaches inside seeing the practices. That one, I think, should make haste to get out, and get to a team where they can play, and develop as a player. College players only have so many years to get ready for the pros, if they want to make it there. The one on track to be back up could stay one more year at Michigan, and lose one more year of eligibility. That seems unwise. Transferring to another team this year would give them one year to learn the play book at the new team. Staying at Michigan one more year seems to be a waste for the likely future back-up.

Again, I like Brandon Peters A LOT! And if he does end up transferring, I would watch him play at the team he transfers too. His passes look so cool. I would just hope it wouldn't be a transfer to Wisconsin. Because, it seems like he'd be a perfect fit with Paul Chryst, and he could come back to haunt Michigan. But then again, what better place for him personally to go. So yeah, it would be interesting to see him at Wisconsin.

I hope Brandon Peters plays well, and makes an NFL roster. That bowl loss to USC still stings, and there is no way to get past that until we go out and thump ND. I'm confident that if BP is the best QB on the roster at putting us in position to win he will play, and I like the idea that JH doesnt offer up starting jobs during recruiting.

Let the players fight tooth and nail for the chance to rep the maize and blue. Let the best of the best be on the field. The cream will rise to the top. We Michigan fans are like rabid dogs, hungry and desperate for something to cheer for. But if we dont win a natty this year I will still bleed, in my living room not so silently, every loss and heartbreak. I wish nothing but the best for BP, whether its here or elsewhere.
