AP Rankings

How do people think this loss will affect our National Ranking for next week? I know it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things but I for one would like next weeks match-up to be a battle of two top-25 teams.

might not be the worst thing to happen to this team. They could use the extra motivation and I like them when they're playing as the underdog. A last-minute victory against IU and a loss to State will likely cost them the ranking but again, this might not be a bad thing. They still have a lot to earn.

that ND will be ranked. Did anyone catch the hit at the end? Apparently no one at NBC is concerned at all with showing if that player that took the hit is alright?

when i was arguing about this earlier.

i know that 'team A beat team B so they should be ranked higher' is annoying sometimes, but if two teams are 4-1 and borderline top 25, and one beat the other, that team should be higher in that specific case.

that said, ND's schedule i think has been much tougher.

we can re-assess after Penn State, but for now, this could be a good thing for the team. Perhaps the kids will realize Tate cant do this on his own. Iowa is going to be one heck of a test.

No one here can honestly tell me that we are a top 25 team. I don't even know if we've played a legit team yet. Maybe ND. Iowa will really show us how good (or bad) we are.

and we don't have any right to talk trash to other fan bases right now. As far as being back are we really back? I mean we are light years better from last year but are we a national power right now? No we are on the way back but we just took the training wheels off so I don't think we could win a race right now. Tate is a big time player but until our D smashes people in the face we are not back.

It's not like it really matters at this point, though. What's really troubling is ND is probably getting back in.

I find it very freeing that a single loss doesn't completely destroy our season and I don't have to constantly worry about our AP ranking.

No way we are ranked, and no way we deserve to be. Playing at our potential in only the last 8 minutes or so caught up to us. We have to learn how to play at our potential for the whole game.

We were never going to go undefeated this season. Like others have said - this loss is perhaps more of a good thing than a bad thing. Perhaps a loss now fosters a couple of important wins later.

...although I understand the sentiment it's hard for me to buy the "this loss is going to be a good thing" argument, particularly since this was the thinking in East Lansing many times during the JLS era.

Losing this game may make losing the next game less likely from a motivational standpoint, but I still prefer to enter Week 6 with an undefeated and theoretically unmotivated team than one that is 4-1 and looking for respect.

Ordinary?

Is it ordinary for a team to pull out last minute wins in 3 games straight? For them to still pull out a win without it's #1WR, #1RB, #1FB and #1QB only playing for what amounted to a full quarter?

I don't know what is ordinary about that, but man whatever teams your watching must be doing the triple lindy into the endzone for a TD on every play.

You realize this is the same team dropped 4 games last year that they had double digit leads against at the end of the 3rd quarter.

But yeah your probably right,
Nevada cupcakes don't count
UM, well we lost that so it can't count
MSU, we certainly didn't intercept the ball to win the game, Cousins just threw it to us
Purdue, they called a time out at the end of the game to lose it, ND certainly didn't drive down the field in the closing minutes without the players mentioned above
UW, win over a 2-3 team well that is nothing, OT? so, 12 plays stopped on the 1 foot line you wish,

I feel bad for you, your missing out on something special this year.

You forgot to mention that Hughes knee was down on the 2 pt conversion, so ND actually lost to an unranked Washington team that went 0-12 last year. Sorry my green friend, there is nothing special about this ND team. And, FWIW, the fact that you think that this ND team is special shows just how far the expectations in South Bend have fallen. Michigan needs to get back to winning the Big Ten fast before we similarly forget who we are and begin thinking that 9-3 seasons (my prediction for ND this year) against unranked opponents with losing records are special.
