2022 SF Gatorade POY Emoni Bates Not Reclassifying to 2021

From Detroit News

Given how Adam Silver of the NBA is widely expected to get rid of the 1 and Done rule, guessing this seals Emoni going directly into the draft.

GL to him, hope he makes bank.

Even if the NBA doesn't abolish the 1-and-done rule, the whole point is mooted by the G-league offering real money to high-schoolers, so there's almost no chance EB steps foot on a college campus instead of turning "pro" and generating some real money right away.

I actually doubt this.  If the players trend to the G-League it would make more sense for him to go straight to the G-League and start earning money.  I imagine he could get the same deal if not better than the guys this year, plus endorsements and probably a shoe deal worth we’ll more than anything MSU could offer him.

Agreed, I don't think he'll play any college basketball not should he. He has the skill of a pro player now. With the G-League becoming a legitimately viable option there isn't much college basketball can offer him from a development perspective.

He's basically the next version of KD, put some weight on him and he is going to be a perennial All-Star. That said, if he  does elect to play college ball it is pretty much a foregone conclusion he is going to MSU.

If he was reclassifying, there would've been a very high likelihood of him going to MSU since I don't think he would be old enough to go pro, but now that he is not, it seems a lot more likely he'll go pro or to the G League

People here are debating whether the One and Done rule will be gone by the time it's relevant for Bates, but I think what's more relevant is what we saw with Isaiah Todd and Jalen Green. Regardless of what the NBA does with One and Done, these kids now have a route to get paid out of high school, stay in America, and start to assimilate to the NBA. Given the options, I just don't see why a kid like Bates would go to college for a year.

There is probably an argument regarding exposure in college vs. G League in regards to endorsements.  Plus, when does the paid for likeness come in?  If you are Emoni and can make a few hundred thousand off that while in college for a year...while getting massive exposure...may be a better option than G League.

Yep, clearly academics. Although Brandon Johns was able to get his HS GPA up to 2.6, so I bet Emoni could do it if Juwan came knocking. Who could turn down an offer from a legend?

This kid is more purely talented than any prospect in maybe 15 years. He’s better than Simmons, Zion, Wiggins, Towns, etc were in high school. And he’s only a sophomore

NIL could bring Michigan into the mix for Mr. Bates as a transition year to the NBA. Izzo has done an outstanding job at MSU but I, from the perspective of Emoni, have no understanding of what he personally would find attractive about Izzo's style of coaching...Juwan on the other hand-Yes!
