2019 Michigan Verbal Commit, 4 Star DE, Stephen Herron: Latest On His Recruitment

Submitted by SkyPanther on

From this weekends Rivals Camp Series, Nashville. Stephen Herron asked to update his recruitment status.

-Michigan calls him once a week. He is still committed to Michigan. Will make an official visit some time in summer.

-Stanford has flown to see him 10 times in the last 3 months. Calls him at least 3 times a week. Is he going to make an official visit to Stanford? "I would say so. Yes."

It's clearly sounds like his committment is not secure, is seriously considering Stanford, and could still flip there.

Recruiting succss mostly comes down to win and losses.

That said, I've heard some disturbing things about how unorganized our recruiting operation had become behind the scenes. From what I've gathered, it seems Chris Partridge in particular was quite annoyed and voiced his concerns. It's no surprise that Harbaugh went out and got 2 excellent recruiters in Al Washington and Sherrone Moore.

Sidenote: Jay Harbaugh has mostly escaped criticsm on this blog despite our RBs struggling with blocking and fumbling. But he also hasn't been able to replace Tyrone Wheatley Sr. on the recruiting trail. Remove Jay's last name and look at the recruits he has brought in. (You won't be impressed when you compare it against Wheatley's commit list.)

Furthermore, it also doesn't help that we have McElwain who sucked as a recruiter at UF. (Contrast that with Jedd Fisch who was well-liked by players and recruits.) Even when McElwain was winning division titles, there were alarming stories from a number of recruits about UF's poor/alienating recruiting visits under his lax leadership. But McElwain was brought in for his coaching exerptise so we have no illusions about him.

I've been seeing that Dicosmo from New Jersey has been leaning Stanford too. He seems lke a big academic kid. Since they are projected for the same position - WDE. If Herron goes Stanford I think DiCosmo comes here, if Herron stays with the good guys then Dicosmo goes to Stanford. It may be why Dicosmo hasn't committed anywhere yet. Just a thought.

Seriously, why the hell do they need to call 3 times a week? What are they talking about...I don’t even need to talk to my parents that much. It sounds like a bunch of ass kissing

This simply sounds like he is really wanting to start providing "differences" to justify a decision that he wants to make if he is accepted.  The amount of attention HS kids is I am sure overwhelming.  If the number of phone calls is truly the deciding factor in going to a school I would be really surprised...wins on the field, programs of interest, perception of future opportunities with NFL, degrees, etc should be the key focus I would think, especially with a kid looking at Stanford/Michigan, etc.

It just sounds like he is looking for a way to let people down easy on his future choice if he gets the opportunity.

As of now, he's gone.  You can tell with the way he talks about the Pac12.  He actually corrects himself from saying I can step in and do well there to I can see myself doing well there.  It's a trick of the recruiting guys.

But it's very easy to negative recruit Michigan right now.  We'll see after the season if that remains true.  Long way to go, no reason to stress on this.

You recruitclowns are turning this place into a fog of stupid.

The team just came off UofM's best recruiting class ever (17), they've signed more 5* under this coach than the previous two combined, recruiting is covering more geography than ever before so they get a look at all the best players, plus the blue chip ratio has jumped up almost 10% in the last few years.

On the other hand, even when they lose a recruit these days they are losing battles to Alabama, Georgia, Stanford and a OSU team that is recruiting as well as any non SEC team ever has; when not too long ago, they were losing those recruiting battles to MSU.

But all that ever gets posted by you nut-humpers is how recruiting is struggling. Maybe you should just come to terms with the fact we aren't always gonna get top 150 players, and no other coach is gonna change that.

Hey here's an idea:

Why don't you post about the other top 50 commit who isn't wavering, Chris Hinton; I hear he had a great year and he's got more stars than Herron; plus his younger bro is really good too. Or what about commit Cade McNamara, he's going to the Elite 11, what a great opportunity to help recruit other guys!

What about the 4* QB from that "terrible" '18 recruiting class who is turning heads as an early enrollee? Seems the recruiting staff might have been on to something there.

Or maybe just talk about some of the 3* players who have become great contributors to the Maize n Blu; Vincent Smith, Jake Ryan, Willie Henry, Frank Clark, Jehu Chesson; or talk about all the 3* on the team now that are already getting it done: Higdon, McKeon, McDoom, Khaleke, Dwumfour.

Nope; you'd all rather whine like petulant children who want their championship candy and want it NOW! NOW! NOW!

Hmm....not a shock that top recruits don't want to play for this fanbase.

The program actually just came off it's worst recruiting class since 2000 (not counting the years there was a coaching change). I agree that the 2017 class was amazing and that Harbaugh has unearthed several 3 stars that have been contributors, but you're kidding yourself if you think UM can keep pace with OSU and PSU if they sign another class like they did last year. I think most of the hand wringing is from looking at the top guys on the board right now and with the exception of Mazi Smith almost all of them are leaning elsewhere. We're getting beat in-state, we're getting beat nationally, and counting on UM to have a huge year thinking that's going to fix everything - which may or may not happen - is troublesome. If Brady Hoke could sell UM after going 8-5 and 7-6, why can't Harbaugh after having much more sucess? I think the reality is most people don't want to have that conversation so they pretend there is no problem with recruiting right now.

Hole’s class after the 7-6 season was ranked 20th. His class after the 8-5 season was great, but a LOT of that class was committed before that season even started, when the team was freah off a Sugar Bowl win.

#1, your caveat is exactly what I'm talking about; what, do you want another one?

Because the suicide squad are creating an environment that makes it very easy for coach to have one foot out the door when the NFL comes calling.

B: I'm not kidding myself one bit. I know the UofM program is way behind OSU (and the SEC dogs); at the same time, the B1G as a conference is rising to be overall more competitive which makes PSU and WISC much harder to beat. Plus there's always Stanford and ND to steal the "academic" advantage, Mike Hart's small foot in his gigantic mouth, geography and the fact that every other fanbase base hates the Michigan program more than any other, even USC's.

And finally, you asked "If Brady Hoke could sell UM after going 8-5 and 7-6, why can't Harbaugh after having much more sucess[sic]?"

The answer is simple, but too painful for some to accept: the recruits remember how quickly and mercilessly this fanbase turned on Hoke and his two top 10 recruiting classes when it didn't provide multiple championships; and, now that the "new coach smell" has worn off, they're worried you ultracrepidarian cockalorums are going to send Harbaugh running back to the NFL. (if he can't recruit, why is he in college and not the pros?)

Ask yourself this: when Aubry Solomon said "F Mich", was he saying that to Harbaugh? To the program he eventually signed with? The school where he goes because he values the education?

Or was he saying that to the large number of fans which make us all look like assclowns?

I'm seriously starting to think that the guys who cover Michigan football recruiting are either being given purposely bad info from the source, or really are just juicing the crowd up more than they should be by running with news of "amazing" visits and similar misleading garbage. It's the only thing that makes sense anymore.

I will say that Lorenz (whose stuff I trust most) doesn't seem to put up as much info as he did during the 2016 and 2017 cycles, while the other guys seem to fire out just as many and if not more articles compared to previous production.

Seems fairly obvious that the sole decision making party here is the Stanford admissions department.  If they take him would appear to be gone.  Not much sense in getting exercised over what comments he makes to recruiting analysts.

Does he have to wait for the normal admissions process to find out?
