For our next entry, I am proud to recall the words of Rudyard Kipling.  The son of a transplanted British architect teaching in Bombay, ol' Rud traveled the world before settling down in Vermont, of all places.  He did pass through current-day Big Ten country in 1889, although there is no record of him stopping in Ann Arbor for an American football match.

Either way, some hundred years later his work caught the eye of one Lloyd H. Carr, with this particular line becoming something of a catch phrase for the defense.  I'm sure there's plenty of John Spyteks and Zach Kaufmans out there that still hear this line in their sleep.  And dream of killing quarterbacks.

For the eyes, they are part of a logo set I designed over a year ago, and actually just submitted it for consideration in another minor league hockey contest. I struggled with the idea of giving this one out because it has personal value to me-- it's currently my desktop wallpaper as I type this-- but it just seemed to best match the attitude and swagger of this shirt.  I played around with a tackling sled in its place, but it didn't have the same effect.

So, time to vote!  What do you guys think?

* One Star:  Anyone have any broccoli?

Yesterday some of you asked if I have a portfolio, and YES, I have two in fact-- one for branding and design, and another for hand-drawn illustration.  Now, are they currently online??  No.  I've built a personal Flash site, and it's pretty much ready to go... but I've since decided to link my branding work out to an independent Six Zero Branding site, and have opted to wait and launch them together.  Sorry... I am involved with a few hockey design sites such as Puckdrawn and Icethetics if anyone cares.  Place your votes, ladies and gentlemen, and feel free to add any comments below!  For tomorrow's shirt I'll be digging deep into the archives for an old take on a new phrase.   See you then for another exciting round of – MGoShirt Alert!!

I like most of your work, Six Zero, on a number of blogs, but if I can offer some constructive criticism, you seem to be getting ahead of yourself a bit on these designs. Try to get back to basics a little more. Just throwing out ideas (I defer to the master)

I find this to be quite good and funny. It's less pro-Michigan and more pro-MGoBlog but there's nothing wrong with that, I think we all would like to support our favorite blog and its writers. I'd buy something like this. I do think it could be improved though... I'm just not sure how.

This is just an idea-generator -- kind of hoping it would spark something from Six-Zero, who is leaps and frogs beyond me at this kind of thing. For one, the image is the size you see. I don't have the tools to make it a large vector graphic like you'd need for screen printing. I bet the board could create a better list on the back. The one part I like is the wolverine (as an allegory for a 'douchey mgoblog user') hitting the reply key

If you mean the wolverine to be a "douchey mgoblog user" then I think you'd need all the actions on the back to be things that ONLY a "douchey mgoblog user" would say. I'm pretty sure that we're all going to stand, give +1s, and refer to Zoltan as the Space Emperor (of Space). I wouldn't want to put a list of "douchey" actions on my back, if nothing else that won't help Brian's traffic and that's part of the point of the shirt. I'd go more for: - Stand during games - Give you a "+1" - Scream "Zoltan for Heisman!" - Have major amounts of "Minor Rage!" - Verify your voracity That starts with things that everyone will understand and ends with an item that only MGoPosters will understand. If you really wanted to go the "douchey" route then I'd say put a Sparty on the front and change all the actions to "douchey" actions. But I'm sure that other people have some good/better ideas.

And I don't hate that. Seriously, good job. Nothing against Six Zero, but this is a good example of why the contest should have been opened to more participants, ime. It's not that one is inherently better than the other. It's just a variety of ideas and perspectives. My only suggestion on this idea is to make the wolverine a little clearer. It took me a bit to realize it was a wolverine leaning on the Reply button.

Agreed on everything except the wolverine. I really wanted to see something from Yvgeni, among others, and obviously Six Zero too. EDIT: Also, I understand (or think I do, maybe) why it was limited to Six Zero; it has to be a logistical nightmare to try to organize all of the random designs that would flow in from everyone if it was a free-for-all. I would still like to see a couple different perspectives though, it makes for a much more creative process.

Nothing is preventing anyone else from coming up with their own t-shirt design. Hell, it was done in this thread. You think that if someone comes up with a dynamite t-shirt, emails the idea to Brian, and it's generally agreed that the shirt will sell that he won't put in the store? Maybe not. But I'm guessing that if someone can come up with something that will be better than the top vote-getter that Six Zero produces, that it can get sold, one way or another. All this does is ensure that there will be an official MGoBlog shirt with a high quality design. Nothing is stopping anyone from making a design, going to UP to get a bunch of shirts printed, and selling them.

There very much is something preventing someone else from coming up with their own T-shirt design. It may not be a matter of logistics, but it is a matter of incentive. Brian has made this a closed contest with only Six Zero as the participant. For all we know, it will be only Six Zero’s design that is considered; no one else’s. There’s not much reason for someone else to submit a design. So even though Misopogon came up with his own design, there is nothing to indicate that it will be considered by Brian, much less made into a shirt. There is a de facto suppression of ideas, instead of an encouragement of ideas. Even Misopogon’s statement “I defer to the master” indicates an unwillingness to offer his design for consideration, absent the approval of the lone participant. But let’s say Misopogon does submit his design for consideration outside the parameters of the contest. For every Misopogon, there might be a CPS or TomW09 struggling artist that basically says “Fuck it. Why bother with the time and effort if Brian isn’t going to consider my idea?” It’s not to say that Brian won’t, but there’s certainly been no indication that he will either. He’s established the contest to find the most popular design as run by Six Zero and as voted on by the MGoCommunity. That’s the mechanism that’s been chosen, not evaluating email submissions, or sifting through thread comments. There’s really not much reason for someone, no matter how talented, to operate outside those parameters.

Like I said, anyone can make a design, go to Underground Printing, and have a t-shirt made for $10. I find it fairly reasonable if someone did that, posted a picture of the T-shirt in a thread and it was a great hit, that it would be completely ignored. And maybe it would. So what. Brian is the one investing in the MGoStore, he deserves the right to have the T-shirt designed by a professional. If it's such a huge problem, ignore the contest. If some "struggling artist" wants to really make a t-shirt, nothing is stopping them. In fact, judging by some of the peoples' responses, this sure would be an excellent time to throw up your own design in a thread and start taking orders, right? I'm not going to lie and say I wouldn't love to see ideas by all posters here - but I highly doubt that there will be a better t-shirt designed than the consensus #1 the six zero comes up with. And I'm guessing the various legal limitations that are inherent with this are major reasons why Brian has one designer making the t-shirts. There will be 15 designs to choose from. I'm pretty happy with that. But hey, +1 for the thoughtful, even if disagreeing, reply.

I don't disagree that logistics are an impediment. But with a busy schedule, I can see how a potential participant would bump it down in priority if there's less chance of the design being considered. I'm not convinced that there's not a better design than the most popular T-shirt designed by Six Zero. Personally, of the ones I've seen, I already like Misopogon's T-shirt better. Six Zero may be designing 15 shirts, but they're also 15 shirts with a similar style of graphic, a similar style of humor and a similar perception. For me, it's like deciding what is the best piece from the Italian Renaissance, but limiting the choices to Titian. In any case, we disagree. That's cool. If anything, I think this type of discussion has actually helped open the floor to some new design ideas, even if they're not officially part of the contest, and that's a good thing. +1 to you.

My feeling is, if it takes more than a split-second to figure out what is going on, it's not working as a t-shirt. "The...strength...wolf...screw it, I'm looking elsewhere."

Some themes that would seem to work well for me: Tacopants +1 [perhaps a football jersey with a "Braylon Approved" and the +1 together...a nice juxtaposition of the two bits] Develop an MGoBlog logo...to be honest, I would buy a shirt that used Brian's avatar for his comments all blown up large. I survived Northwestern 2008 or some such We can only go up from here... One of the many anacronymns used here... YMRMFSPA, INAJTTP, etc. Peanut Butter and Jelly with a Baseball Bat Perhaps the "2008-06-30 Club" Unverified Voracity OMG Shirtless My Fake 40 Time is: list something rediculous like 4.33 I don't need anger management, all I have is a Minor Rage problem... No Rawk Muzak The picture of Coach giving the thumbs up... I am sure there are dozens of other things we do t-shirts on that are quintisental MGoBlog...personally I think some variaton on the +1 theme will be effective, especially if you make it look like a jersey number...

So far I like every shirt posted as comments better than the ones produced by Six Zero. I know Six Zero does great work, but I definitely would buy any of the ones just posted over the ones being voted on.

Why are all the sarcastic shirts from the peanut gallery so much better? Also, why are all the designs blue? Aren't we like required to wear maize?

I like the reference to our Defense. From what I hear that quote has been the theme for our defense since the days of Carr, and while I haven't seen it confirmed under the new coach I assume that with it being as engrained as it is, that it will continue.
