Wednesday Recruitin' Frets Over Decommits
Remember, all-time updates can be found on the 2011 Michigan Football Recruiting Board. If you have any recruiting tips or questions, you can e-mail them to me at [email protected] or tweet @varsityblue. For game updates on Wolverine commits, check out the F riday Night Lights series.
On Greg Brown
Some corners of the Michigan internet are up in arms about OH CB Commit Greg Brown taking an official visit to Syracuse over the weekend. In the aftermath, Scout has classified him as a soft commit, and nobody's quite sure whether he'll end up in Michigan's class when all is said and done.
Brown was an early offer (as in pre-junior year) who hasn't developed like experts were expecting. The reports from his games this year seem to indicate he's a decent offensive player, but all of his speed is straight-line, and he looks more like a high-end MAC recruit than a Big Ten guy.
I'm certainly not rooting for him to decommit from the class, but there's a chance that, should the decommitment come, it's a mutual decision from Greg and the coaches. With higher-level DBs (such as Dallas Crawford) now interested in the Wolverines, it's understandable.
Iowa Visitors
The Wolverines hosted a number of official visitors for the Iowa game. OH TE/LB Austin Traylor gave his opinion to Josh Helmhodt:
“I haven’t really sat down and thought through my visit,” Traylor said Sunday, “but it’s a good program, a good school and I like what I saw on my visit.”
as did NC TE Drew Owens:
"They set a pretty high bar for the other schools to compete with," Owens said. "My interest is still about the same. I just know a lot more about the program, a lot more about the staff, and a lot of questions I had were answered. I feel more comfortable about the school now."
The other official visitors included FL QB commit Kevin Sousa, SC WR Hakeem Flowers, VA WR Quinta Funderburke, and FL DT Tim Jernigan.
In addition, there were a few unofficial visitors in the house, including a top Florida duo in South Fort Meyers teammates WR Sammy Watkins and CB Dallas Crawford ($, info in header). Following the visit, the Wolverines now lead for Crawford ($, info in header). Tom's weekly update had more on Crawford, and his possible effects on Watkins.
There were a few 2012 prospects as well, and they're discussed below. The next big recruiting weekend for Michigan should be Wisconsin, though there's a chance that some recruits come in for the Illinois contest in a few weeks, and FL S HaSean Clinton-Dix's on-and-off consideration of Michigan may be on-again at that time.
Other Guys
Michigan and West Virginia lead Cincinnati for FL slot Prince Holloway ($, info in header), and he plans to pick between those three schools.
IL OL Chris Bryant has "the possibility of a commitment coming soon" ($, info in header). He's previously said he doesn't plan to decide until after his senior season, but keep an eye on Bryant. Michigan, Stanford, and Illinois are his top three, with Arizona just outside that group.
PA DE Deion Barnes will officially visit Michigan, but won't start taking visits until after his senior season ($, info in header).
FL S Wayne Lyons is considering an official visit to Michigan ($, info in header).
Michigan still leads for LA CB Daren Kitchen ($, info in header). Kitchen and the rest of Vanderbilt Catholic's team returned to the field a couple weeks back after the untimely deaths of a pair of their teammates.
MI CB Raymon Taylor is committed to Indiana, but that won't stop him from visiting other schools ($, info in header). No word on if the local product will check out Ann Arbor.
Happy Trails, Ye Wisconsin-Bound
- OH RB Trayion Durham committed to Wisconsin.
- OH WR AJ Jordan is deciding tonight . It's been a Michigan-Wisconsin race for quite some time, and it sounds like one the Badgers will win. He cancelled a visit to Ann Arbor for the Iowa game.
- OH OL Ray Ball committed to Wisconsin.
2012
Tom has film on 2012 OH QB Dimitrious Davis, a dual-threat with a number of teammates who could get a Michigan look in the class.
MI RB Drake Johnson visited Michigan a couple weeks back for the Michigan State contest. He's a local product out of Pioneer High School.
PA OL Tyler Alt has a new highlight tape of his junior season through five games:
He visited Michigan for the UConn game, and has a good relationship with Coach Frey.
OH DE Chris Wormley has received his Michigan offer, and Michigan is steadily improving their standing with him.

Latwan Anderson - the high-rated safety out of Glenville last year - has just quit Miami's football team. Any chance he looks to Michigan as a transfer? I know the Glenville thing isn't a good sign, but he did vaguely consider us (and WVU fwiw) last year. Also, since he's on a track scholarship at the U he can actually football for another school starting next year.

Listen to today's Recruiting Roundup:

It sounds like Sam is trying to say as delicately as possible that the kid is a headcase.

that was known well before he committed to Miami. All you need to know is that he went to Glenville and Tressel didn't take him then and probably won't take him now. I think that says something. But who knows...
October 20th, 2010 at 12:12 PM ^
Yeah, I remember hearing all kinds of stuff about this during his recruitment. I just provided the Recruiting Roundup because people get jumpy around here when you say something about a 19 year old or insinuate that we might not want a OMGZ 5* Safety without a linky linky.
October 20th, 2010 at 4:05 PM ^
that could actually play football, at this point.

Until he bombs out, and it becomes yet another example of RichRod running off players/not recruiting Michigan Men/lowering standards to win/whatever the newspapers want to make up this time

Barnes would be a solid player to add to this class. Of course, wouldn't it be awesome to get HaHa to come up here with Dee and maybe Patti next year.
I am also excited to see if Wormley commits to UM as he is a major player that we need for next year.
Just keep winning and all of the big time recruits will be coming into UM this year and next.

I really cannot wait to see how the 2011 class finishes and how the 2012 class starts out. Here's hoping to see the reincarnation of the 1997 Defense very soon!

Why isnt Taylor Decker listed as a visit in the above article. He is an Ohio 6' 7" 270 lb OL who could definately help our OL or DL. He is also being recruited by the Bucks, ND, and just about any other Big Ten School. We could definately use him
October 20th, 2010 at 11:50 AM ^
Decker is interested in those schools as well as Michigan but I don't know that he is being actively recruited by them. He just got his first offer from Cincinnati this week so I don't know that he's a guy that Michigan is truly interested in or is more of a Plan B type of guy.
October 20th, 2010 at 6:23 PM ^
I think he'll probably be a top target, actually. Offensive linemen usually start the recruiting process a little more slowly if they're not Seantrel Henderson, and he'll hear from Michigan in good time.

Nice work Tim - one note: the 2011 link above doesn't work, and I think the 2011 link in the Useful Stuff tab may need to be updated, as it still has Justice Hayes as a possible commit and doesn't comment on Dee Hart, amongst others.
Best of luck to Brown - if he stays with UM, then great; if not, happy trails.
Still worried a bit about LB and DT recruiting, especially if WC jumps the line.
October 20th, 2010 at 6:25 PM ^
The link in the useful stuff tab isn't busted, there's just a technology glitch (a relapse from earlier this summer) that logs you out and gives you an outdated version of the board. If you log in on the recruiting board page itself, you should get a better version.
I'll update the link in the recruiting posts to reflect that page. Thanks for the heads up.

Yeah I see him just seeing what else is out there thats all. No worries from me.
October 20th, 2010 at 12:01 PM ^
I dont like seeing Wisco raiding Ohio and leaving with so many good players
October 20th, 2010 at 12:49 PM ^
Seems like they can recruit outside of Wisconsin after all. I guess this whole "winning" thing actually does help recruiting, especially if it's against the #1 team in the land. Ours will come in time. Plenty of chances left to sway the hearts and minds of recruits this season. Just win, baby!
October 20th, 2010 at 12:06 PM ^
"Mutual decision" is a great euphemism for pulling the kid's offer, Tim. I prefer "Barnes'd" though.
October 20th, 2010 at 12:08 PM ^
Is it just me or were his comments not exactly a ringing endorsement. Maybe I'm reading too much into this. I guess I'm used to the Dee Hart's "I love this place, I want to commit here" reaction for all his visits. Or maybe I'm used to recruits being blown away by the Michigan experience. I mean, who wouldn't?
October 20th, 2010 at 1:12 PM ^
His comments are a perfect example of "damning with faint praise."
October 20th, 2010 at 1:46 PM ^
I would not be entirely unhappy if Greg Brown and Michigan parted ways, as long as someone can be found to replace him in the recruiting class.
October 20th, 2010 at 6:30 PM ^
Agreed, he's a "take him or leave him" type to me. If the staff replaced him with, say, Dallas Crawford, I wouldn't shed any tears about it.
October 20th, 2010 at 1:50 PM ^
Any news with him? I suppose no news is good news
October 20th, 2010 at 6:29 PM ^
There was an update 1 or 2 wednesday recruitin' posts ago. He was originally going to decide this month, but he decided to take all five visits, and will announce a decision after that.
October 20th, 2010 at 3:18 PM ^
Spooky. I go to pioneer too and am in the same class as him. This kind of thing really puts football (and the athletes who play it) into perspective
October 20th, 2010 at 5:50 PM ^
like all the recuirts had a good time at the iowa game.We are now a solid leader for Dallas Crawford, which will help us land Sammy Watkins. What about Tim Jernigan?
October 21st, 2010 at 8:02 AM ^
Has anyone heard anything about how Jernigan's reaction was to the visit?
October 21st, 2010 at 1:21 PM ^
Jernigan is notoriously quiet about his recruitment. You probably won't hear anything out of him for a while.
