Report: Michigan Hires Hoops Assistant DeAndre Haynes

The Michigan Insider's Josh Henschke got the scoop last night on Michigan's assistant coaching search: John Beilein has reportedly hired Illinois State assistant DeAndre Haynes for one of the two open spots. Haynes hasn't actually coached for ISU; he was hired there in May, and Beilein obviously coveted him if he was willing to put another program into such a tough spot.

When Billy Donlon departed, multiple hoops insiders mentioned that Beilein would try to fill the two open spots with an experienced coach and a younger up-and-comer. Haynes fits the latter bill with the added benefit of being a local guy. A standout point guard at Detroit Southwestern, he went on to be a four-year starter for Kent State and won MAC player of the year as a senior. He left KSU as their all-time leader in assists and steals before spending six season playing pro ball overseas.

After his playing career, Haynes returned to Kent State as an assistant in 2012, spending four seasons in that role before taking the same position on Toledo's bench last season when the Rockets offered a contract he couldn't turn down after he'd previously passed on opportunities to leave his alma mater. He's coached under a couple successful mid-major coaches in Tod Kowalczyk and Rob Senderoff.

ISU planned to have Haynes focus on coaching their guards, and he could have a similar role at Michigan. The other assistant coach spot remains open. Director of Player Personnel Chris Hunter will presumably continue to serve as an interim assistant with permission to recruit until that spot is filled.

Haynes may not be a big name, but he's about the same age as LaVall Jordan and Bacari Alexander were when Beilein hired that pair. That worked out alright.

I attended Kent State at the same time as DeAndre. Great dude, excellent leader and will make a wonderful addition to the staff. Will absolutely get the most out of someone like Simpson. Haynes was an underrated, tenacious guard in his day!

I love John Beilein. But I think it's time we retired the "Beilein wouldn't do this unless he had to" meme.  He's shown that he's willing to put other coaches and other programs and even his own players in tough spots. Sadly, that is the bare minimum needed to succeed in today's college hoops. But it also disqualifies you from the automatic "he's a nice guy" disclaimer.

He lost two guys late in coaching cycle. Coaches have to be poached from somewhere, unless you are OSU and have Urbs drop into your lap. Unless you'd expect him to coach without assistants, this is pretty normal. Doesn't make him good or bad.  Just makes him a Division 1 coach.

Hiring an assistant from another school, even if he was just hired, is normal.  Hell, he did it with Bacari.

Not sure where you are going with your comment.

If Michigan can achieve even a fraction of the success of Illinois State University and Kent State University in basketball, Imwill be overjoyed. These great institutions provide a roadmap for success at all levels. Coach has hit this hire out of the park. When you consider all the other lousy coaching staffs around the nation, i.e. Duke, Kentucky, Kansa, etc, I suspect Michigan will continue to challenge for 7th place in B1G ever year!

Why does Michigan fans always have to be fake and pessimistic about everything? I swear this is the worse and most fakest fanbase ever. You find a reason to hate Beliein. Let me get this right ....some idiots lost respect for Beliein because hired another assistant from other colleges bit what about the colleges that took our assistants in the middle of the recruiting period? I hate you fake Walmart fans. Last year you clowns like matt D wanted DJ Wilson to transfer and said that wasnt any good but he ended up being a first rounder...you want Beliein fired because out team "sucked" but we were a shot away from the elite 8. Belien has led us to the NC game that should be our national title. Stop being so fake and pessimistic. I hate UM fans. Half of you don't attend games or support the university. All you do is sit around and bitch about. Coaching and recruiting. The man hasn't even step foot on campus and you're crying.I wish that you fake fans just die....Get on my damn nerves.I can't believe that people are crying about Beliein taking a assistant from another univesity as if it hasn't happen to us. People find reasons to hate Beliein but everyone outside of this fake ass fanbase love him. He is a coach who doesnt cheat an habe great integrity but you prions arent happy with that....screw bums.
