NY needs a Snake Plissken statue first

He'll escape.

Well done

Donnie Brasco at the very least
February 16th, 2011 at 3:00 PM ^
should just make the real robocop and have him be apart of the police force. And then michigan can recurit him to play DE.
February 16th, 2011 at 3:03 PM ^
Take the money and build the real Robocop. Genius.
Couple of ideas for who to use: Charlie Sheen, Ken Jennings or the porn actor who spits on people.
Bad ass.
February 16th, 2011 at 4:07 PM ^
Tiger Woods?
February 16th, 2011 at 7:52 PM ^
That a movie being exposed is only a matter of time...
February 16th, 2011 at 4:39 PM ^
Charlie Sheen for sure. He always knows just what to do.
February 16th, 2011 at 3:18 PM ^
If only we could use that $50000 to pay for an extra teacher or two for Detroit Public Schools (They're about to go to 60 kids per classroom in some schools)
February 16th, 2011 at 3:24 PM ^
Seems like a slightly better use of funds now doesn't it...
February 16th, 2011 at 3:45 PM ^
Sorry -- trying to do anything meaningful in Detroit (i.e., anything other than cosmetic changes in the downtown area) will, in the near term, be like chucking snowballs into the center of the earth to raise the temperature.
An extra teacher would certainly not be unhelpful. But, the fundamental problems will still be there. What are those? A large city where the average socioeconomic level is abysmally low.
I'm of the opinion that it's far too late for conventional fixes. That reeks of naive, suburban thinking. Detroit's citizens are, in the aggregate, too far gone. They can't help themselves. (Take a second to think about that.) For just one of many examples, look at what the "leaders" of that dunghole (Kwame et al.) get away with, and look at how easy it is for them.
The Robocop statue is a joke, yes, but it's out-of-the-box thinking. (I dislike that expression, but it seems about right.) It brings generally positive (yes, seriously) thinking to the area.
Detroit will get better only when the average quality of its population improves. (That isn't a slam on the low end. Their position is a consequence of many factors.)
February 16th, 2011 at 4:47 PM ^
I'm not against building the statue. In fact, I agree with pretty much everything you said. Having a reasonable amount of quality teachers isn't going to fix the city by itself. My statement more had to do with how easy it seems to raise money for a joke (whether it's a helpful joke or not) when something like the education system is woefully poor.
February 16th, 2011 at 5:54 PM ^
I agree -- that definitely sucks.
February 16th, 2011 at 4:42 PM ^
then why dont you start that campaign and raise the money?
February 16th, 2011 at 3:26 PM ^
and I did. It was either Robocop or Beveled Guilt, sorry Brian.
February 16th, 2011 at 3:30 PM ^
Here's a stupid yet serious question: What would be a better use of vacant land - erecting a statue or a whore house? The whore house would arguably drive the values of adjacent property down, moreso than a simple statue (no matter how silly said statute is). That said, I submit that a whore house would provide a much greater public service than a statue. Thoughts?
February 16th, 2011 at 3:32 PM ^
Can I pay to make love to the statue?
February 16th, 2011 at 7:54 PM ^
I bet you could do it for free.
February 16th, 2011 at 4:25 PM ^
In some places you'd think a whorehouse would improve property values.
Plus if it's legal and pays taxes, that pays for other public services, too.
February 16th, 2011 at 4:43 PM ^
Serious question, Robocop.
February 16th, 2011 at 4:54 PM ^
Enjoy the Board while voting does not have an effect on point totals. I see Bolivian in your future unless your substance of your quips improve . . .

If the fundraiser goes as well as Robocop's, we might even get Billy and Taggart.

I don't think these guys know what they're getting when it comes to the actual production of the statue.
We can take a relatively small figure of RoboCop (conceivably even an action figure), have it 3D scanned by lasers (cool!) and scale its form to create a light-weight model of any size we'd like, which can then be used to pour and cast liquid metal.
Really? You're going take a small 4" action figure, scan it and blow it up 7 feet tall. Someones been watching too much CSI.
It'll look something like this:

I keep telling the wife that Detroit needs a Robocop statute.
February 16th, 2011 at 5:58 PM ^
It's funny, but at the same time, all of that money could have been better utilized at Mott's.
February 17th, 2011 at 8:57 AM ^
That's an awful lot of applesauce. Or apple juice. But spending $50,000 on Mott's for Detroiters is probably a better idea than say giving it to C.S. Mott, which isn't in the city. However if you're looking for a good children's hospital to pimp while attempting to make a point might I suggest Children's Hospital of Michigan instead? Conveniently located Midtown and everything.
February 16th, 2011 at 6:14 PM ^
The Robocop statue is an idiotic idea. The city of Detroit is trying to alter the popular perception that it is, well, "New Detroit", and this is the last thing that it needs. A statue of Axel Foley makes more sense and "Beverly Hills Cop" really only has a tangential relationship to the city.
February 16th, 2011 at 7:25 PM ^
A statue of Torgo from "Manos: The Hands Of Fate"? Doesn't matter where we put it. It will only make sense to the MST3K diehards.
February 16th, 2011 at 7:43 PM ^
Detroit needs to legalize gambling. It's the only obvious generator of the requisite cash.
February 16th, 2011 at 11:02 PM ^
That will pack the casinos that they already have downtown.
February 16th, 2011 at 11:06 PM ^
All arguments against the statue based on tackiness are summarily rejected by the court on the grounds that we already have a big fist sculpture** and nothing that wouldn't raise the hackles of the churches can out-tacky a twenty-foot fist. As long as the statue isn't immediately graffitied on (this city is its own worst enemy in this regard) I see no problems.
**Which just yesterday my dad opined wasn't clenched hard enough. Given the amusement with which out-of-towners view the fist (as an ironic commentary on the city) it would take a local to complain that the giant fist statue isn't clenched hard enough.
For the record, I like the fist statue. It's my ambition to take a picture one day fist-bumping the fist using the magic of perspective.
February 17th, 2011 at 12:15 AM ^
The Joe Louis fist statue rules.
The Robocop statue will be tacky and embarrassing.
February 17th, 2011 at 12:34 AM ^
Into the American Hong Kong. They were the largest major city to go for LBJ's programs, which failed. Do the opposite. It probably couldn't be worse, right?
February 17th, 2011 at 7:18 PM ^
I like it, but how did you not just go with Rohbocop?

Ehh crossed my mind but I thought RoboRoh sounded more 80ish
