is it weird that I hope that he fails miserably there now? its sad that the guy wanted to go coach an NFL team for 5 years instead of restoring Michigan to glory and becoming the second coming of Bo. He could've been on an MGoBlog TShirt!
January 7th, 2011 at 4:00 PM ^
I wanted Harbaugh, even if he was going to be in for only a few years and then head to the NFL on the grounds I thought he'd be an excellent guy to get a system going. The kind of guy who would leave talented assistants behind, etc. I was fine with that. The idea of say his D-Coord stepping up in 4 years when Harbaugh goes to the NFL was not a horrible idea. Plus of course we'd have a coach in the NFL hopefully drafting our guys and making recruiting easier. We could have been a feeder team producing the kinds of players the Harbaughs wanted. That would mean lots of people taken on draft day and make recruiting easier.
Over the past week though it has become clear that if Harbaugh was going to coach here it would be because Stephen J. Ross had either filled his house full of money or put a gun to his head. Harbaugh wasn't going to be here because he loved Michigan and the thought of saving his alma mater. He'd have won, he's too competitive not to try his hardest and field winning teams, but he'd have no long term loyalty. No long term desire to leave a system behind. He'd have come in, gone through the motions of saving us, won a few bowls and then headed to the NFL without a second thought. He wouldn't have used his position has a NFL head coach to make recruiting easier or the like.
I'm all for going to TCU and making a lot of people on that staff very rich if they come to Michigan. As to Harbaugh I wish you the best and if it is ever proven you left Brandon at the altar I hope you get your ass kicked by the Colts in the Super Bowl and have to watch as Hart runs for 100 yards and 5 TDs.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:26 PM ^
I don't know if SF can ever reach the Super Bowl. The only thing they have going is that they are in a easy division.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:01 PM ^
It is time to revoke his Michigan Man card for violations
January 7th, 2011 at 4:18 PM ^
I thought Mike Hart already did that
January 7th, 2011 at 4:01 PM ^
I can't take this anymore. I am so disappointed in DB right now and I don't know that he can totally redeem himself in my eyes.
This just sucks. I'm really sick and fucking tired of getting shit on as a UM fan. I can't wait to see my facebook page fill up with sparty friends taunting me about UM's mediocrity...the worst part is I can't say shit back without referencing glory days.
I know the worlds not over, but I am still pissed.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:06 PM ^
This isn't Brandon's fault -- Harbaugh obviously just wasn't interested in coming here.
And, as has been reported, some players had lost faith in RichRod after the bowl debacle. Brandon might have been considering keeping RR (as was my preference heading into the Gator Bowl), but after that, he had no choice.
He did what he felt he had to do: He fired RichRod and went hard after Harbaugh, and it didn't work out. He's obviously also vetting other candidates, with Fitzgerald the only known one so far.
Let's see what happens before we flip out. I'm holding out hope for Patterson, personally, but Mullen would also be fine. There are good coaches out there besides Harbaugh.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:17 PM ^
I just had to get that out of my system. I know there are other good coaches out there, but it remains to be seen if we get one. My biggest fear is we go conservative and hire a Brady Hoke because it's safe (which in my personal opinion is not safe at all, cause if he sucks it up we're going to be in a divided fanbase situation like the RR debacle).
Another part of the disappointment is a longtime UM lover like Harbaugh wouldn't even consider coming home at a once in a lifetime opportunity. That shows the program isn't quite what it used to be if someone like that tells us "Thanks, but no thanks"
I'm in a wait and see mode before completely losing it. Losing out on JH sucks tho
January 7th, 2011 at 4:06 PM ^
Harbaugh wasn't coming to Michigan if Jesus Christ himself was the AD.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:35 PM ^
So are you saying that if Bo (JC) wasn't still the AD, that he couldn't have pulled Harbaugh? I am not sure I believe that.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:56 PM ^
JH threw the football program that he played for and university he attended under the bus over academics. If Bo would have been alive when it happened he would have kicked JH's a**. Not to mention Bo wouldn't have fired a coach after three years.
January 7th, 2011 at 5:18 PM ^
Either way, all Harbaugh said was he and other players were steered into General Studies so he could focus on football, and he would have preferred to study History.
Since that appears to be true, and it is counter to what our program should aspire to be, I have no problem with it. Especially since he walked the talk at Stanford.
i.e., Jim did not sensationalize the truth, Ann Arbor News did.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:01 PM ^
Lets re-hire RR
January 7th, 2011 at 4:04 PM ^
Wish we could. Our 2 best options the next couple of years were 1) Harbaugh, 2) RR. Now they are both eliminated.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:11 PM ^
Rich Rodriguez proved he was not an option over a 37 game body of work. By far the worst three year period in school history and with zero evidence we were making progress in meaningful games. Get over it and move on.
David Brandon has this handled.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:14 PM ^
You have got to be one of the most negative people on here. People can talk about RR if they want, you get over it and move on. You're the bitter one.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:22 PM ^
facts! Shame on NateVolk.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:37 PM ^
There you go again with your misstatements of fact. Good thing you're not a lawyer (not that you'd want to be one) - a judge would hold you in contempt of court for making a sweeping statement like that.
Dude, Rodriguez is gone. Let it go. Let people complain to feel better and you can simply bask in your own glory that is no more Rodriguez. Here's hoping you never have to be shown that the decision to fire Rodriguez was a bad one.
January 7th, 2011 at 5:05 PM ^
But the defense got worse each year he was here. That is why he is no longer here.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:35 PM ^
NateVolk,
What? So Harbaugh isn't guaranteed to come here anymore?
You're a clown. You should change your avatar back to that toolish looking picture of yourself.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:40 PM ^
It should be a picture of that MSU diploma. It would explain a number of his posts to those less familiar with his antics.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:09 PM ^
He coached at UM, so he's a Michigan Man. Should unite the fan base.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:02 PM ^
Harbaugh goes 6-10 next year and then 3-13 the year after with the 49ers and gets sh-t-canned.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:09 PM ^
Either way, you go to the NFL to get fired. I don't know why coaches do it.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:21 PM ^
Its got to be all about ego. He had it so good at Stanford. The school has tons of money and already offered him a great contract. Palo Alto is one of the best places in America to live. He had his own system and own players in it. The prospects for next year were very bright. If anything, I think his best decision would be to stay. But the ego forces him to "go pro" rather than be happy where he is. You know, love the one you're with.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:27 PM ^
That's just jewelry. Coaching your alma mater at a time they most need you is noble. Coach Michigan, at any time, is motherfucking holy.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:50 PM ^
Dissed his alma mater again. First time, shame on him. Second time, shame on us.
Where are all the idiots who wanted Rich Rod to fail because they were sure this was Harbaugh's "dream job".
January 7th, 2011 at 7:08 PM ^
The Detroit Free Press
January 7th, 2011 at 4:47 PM ^
Personal glory, sibling rivalry, a wife who wants to live in California. Pick one. Have fun with the QB situation there, Jimmy. I'm praying they draft Mallett just for the sideline blowups alone.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:02 PM ^
I thought the choice was Harbaugh or RR? Now we have neither. Thanks DB!
January 7th, 2011 at 4:03 PM ^
i know it's over and oh it never really began but in my heart it was so real
January 7th, 2011 at 4:05 PM ^
Is that even how you spell it? I want a physical, smashmouth coach who won't take crap from anybody. Is that too much to ask?
January 7th, 2011 at 4:06 PM ^
at least DB called this one right. hopefully he will get our hire right
January 7th, 2011 at 4:07 PM ^
He's taking over a team that is in the bottom of the league. Haven't had a winning season since 2002 and they don't have any stability in the front office. He is a hard ass ( how well did that work out for Singletary) pro athletes don't respond to that attitude they revolt. I hope he foes well because he's from Michigan but I see him being fired by the end of his third year. The NFL will always be there Michigan won't.

GO BLUE
January 7th, 2011 at 4:11 PM ^
He's also in a division where 7-9 makes the playoffs. The Rams and Cardinals run crappy organizations so it could just be Pete vs. Jim for the division title every year even assuming neither team makes a big leap forward.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:18 PM ^
The 49ers and dolphins interviewed him but. he would'nt even hear brandon out, if he did DB would of took a jet to cali to talk to him
January 7th, 2011 at 9:27 PM ^
Flight tracker showed a jet flying back to Willow Run from Palo Alto late this afternoon.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:08 PM ^
Brian,

Time to put MGoBlog at Defcon 2 status. We are at imminent Hoke hiring.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:08 PM ^
I think I can already hear the bomb sirens going off now...
January 7th, 2011 at 4:08 PM ^
Fans need to stop the doom and gloom and wait a few goddamn days to see what happens. And then we may have to wait until September till we know if the new coach, whoever it is, is going to work in the immediate future. We aren't going to know if anyone is going to be successful until they have a few seasons under their belt, so I'm not sure why people are freaking out now.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:15 PM ^
"until they have a few seasons under their belt." Exactly the problem; why are we even in the position of needing to hire someone who needs multiple years to see if they will succeed. Isn't that what we were in the midst of showing?
On the other hand, I believe that the right person (and that's where Brandon is on the spot) could bring success much more quickly. That is, someone who can hold the team together, bring in a decent class this year, and use well the players at his disposal.
Will DB pull it off? I'm highly skeptical but willing to be proven wrong.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:27 PM ^
Personally I'd rather not wait, not because I'm impatient (even though I am) but because I'd rather our recruiting class was larger than 5 or so people.
January 7th, 2011 at 5:23 PM ^
That's the exact problem, we need someone almost everyone can align behind for those lean years so we can get out the other side or we ar Notre Dame ...
Quick, name who that person is ....
January 7th, 2011 at 5:35 PM ^
Miles or Patterson could, I believe. If the fans want to get pissed at a coach for the second time in three years before he even has a chance to step on campus, then so be it. They'll be throwing the whole program under the bus along with him. Does no one see that?
January 7th, 2011 at 4:08 PM ^
as long as it's not Hoke. DB will make the right hire. As long as it's not Hoke
January 7th, 2011 at 4:08 PM ^
Both would be tits hires
January 7th, 2011 at 4:12 PM ^
Gruden over Cowher any day.
January 7th, 2011 at 4:24 PM ^
If you're looking for a former NFLer, why not throw John Fox in the mix? He's a smash-mouth guy with a focus on defense and took the Panthers to the Super Bowl. That should appease a large amount of the Bo/Lloyd fanbase. He struggled of late but only because his real handicap is that his boss (Jerry Richardson) is a megalomaniac and the front office can't draft for sh-t. (No Michigan players on the roster . . . need I say more?)
