Friday morning 'WTF is going on?' thread

Submitted by artds on
So apparently Tony Sparano continues to swim with the Dolphins rather than sleep with the fishes (although if this week has taught us anything, it's that the sports media is just as clueless and in the dark as the rest of us).

But if the latest reports are accurate (which you should doubt), then it's starting to look like Harbaugh may be content where he is and may have just been using his newfound status as the hottest coach in America to get a bigger payday out of Stanford.

If JH is spurning Miami and SF, and Denver doesn't have the dough and too many overlords as well, that must mean we're getting JH! After all, when I suggested JH could end up staying at Standford, aaamichfan said I hadn't been paying attention, b/c if I had I would know that that was the one thing JH wasn't going to do. Great day for us dawning right now.

Why would anyone want to coach at a school that cannot even fill their stadium?

Their stadium is small, only seats 50K, and they, on average, get only 40K to show up.  Their season ticket sales have barely increased in many years, even during this upswing.

They just don't care about football!

That would depend on where Harbaugh's balance between inheriting and building lies, would it not?

The streak of consecutive sellouts at Michigan Stadium, I should remind you, does not stretch back to Bo's first game, let alone farther. The current streak of ssellouts stretches back only ("only") to 1975.

Yeah, I think you're confusing me with Magnus. I never said anything about him staying at "Standford."

You are a genius, my man. No one in the cyberblogosphere has floated this idea, and now that you do, it looks so damned obvious. Hell yeah, get us a Harbaugh, there are multiple to choose from. What's Jack up to these days? He also has a sister, doesn't he? What's her buyout?

Harbaugh to UofM or he will stay at Stanford, especially with Luck staying, now the salary is way up,  and he possibly can win a National Championship.

To many signs showing that he may stay in college rather than the NFL, with his NFL interviews it appears like he is just out to raise his salary stakes, the Miami Dolphins owner is a UofM grad, Stephen Ross is his name, just recently declined Harbaugh’s coaching candidacy, at one point early in this coaching change process there were rumors that Ross said he wouldn’t get between his Alma mater’s hiring of Harbaugh so I find it curious as that is what just took place.

The San Francisco 49’ers are slightly ahead of both Stanford and UofM’s offers of which both schools most definitely could match NFL teams offers with salary and with grad donors such as people at the level of Ross etc. and I wouldn’t doubt if that is what is going on.

If not Harbaugh, my choices now are:  Dan Mullen or Gary Patterson … screw the Michigan man thing.  Miles has too much baggage and Hoke is too much of a risk.

if Harbaugh REALLY wanted the 49er's gig, why hasn't he taken it yet?? He knows what their offer is....if that's the job he really wants, why hasn't he accepted yet??

I'll concede that he had to meet w/ Miami and maybe he still wants to see what Denver has to offer, but maybe now that he has seen what these NFL teams are willing to offer, the UM job doesn't look so bad in comparision. I know if I were looking at a team with a QB situation as murky as SF's (Alex Smith, Troy Smith...bleh), I'd have some reservations.

I think every day that goes by the JH does not sign w/ an NFL makes the odds of him ending up in AA greater. I'm not saying the odds are great right now, but each day he remains unsigned, the more likely he might end up in Ann Arbor.

I'm at work, which is boring and shitty as usual. I bought some new gloves today on woot.com

Working on planning my future borther-in-law's bachelor party

Confused as hell about the coaching search and REALLY hoping that we don't fuck it up any worse than we have. I was in the Harbaugh or Keep Rich camp... and now it sounds like that just aint gonna happen.

I'd take John Harbaugh though - who according to reports has contacted U of M. In general though, I wont believe anything until Brian writes it or Dave Brandon is quoted on the record

Older sister met a South African boy while they were both studying abroad for grad school. Wedding is back home in Chicago. He/his friends don't know where to go/what to do, so my friends and I are planning it

Random post for this thread, but here's another name to think about: Jeff Jagodzinski, former coach at BC.  What I know about him is that he's a 47 year old, MidWest guy with both college & NFL experience.  He had success with Matt Ryan as his quarterback, but has struggled in recent NFL and UFL jobs.  Is he worth considering? (I don't know enough about his football philosophy to have a credible opinion.)

This is all set up nicely to announce at halftime on Sunday. "introducing... the next football coach... for the University of Michigan!"

The line between reality and the absurd is blurred beyond recognition now, so what the heck: Maybe Bowlsby (Stanford AD) talked Luck into saying he's staying to entice JH to listen to a new offer. If JH still says "no thanks," Luck has until January 15 to declare what he's really doing. Why wouldn't he have taken that extra week to decide?

Which means Jim Harbaugh could come to Michigan after having done a THOROUGH evaluation of all possible options including his current school and three storied NFL franchises: One in his Bay Area backyard, one with a Michigan alum owner, and one with a Stanford hero alum (uh) consultant/front office guy. "No one can claim that I didn't do my homework before making this decision ... but I am a Michigan Man."

Didn't I see a rumor posted that Harbaugh would be announced at halftime of tomorrow's Kansas MBB game? Imagine... "Is this heaven?" "No ... it's Michigan."

says search firm being brought in.

Contrary to press conference, but also confirmed by Brandon.

Sorry if posted already, lack the time to scroll through every post.

A search firm and a search committee are indeed entirely different entities. See below from a Chengelis article from today. No one should conclude that because he's using an outside search firm that the time frame for making a decision has suddenly been lengthened. In fact, this could help speed up the process.

Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon is not creating a search committee to find the Wolverines' next football coach, but he has hired a search firm.

Brandon announced Wednesday the firing of Rich Rodriguez, who was 15-22 in three seasons at Michigan. Brandon said during the news conference he plans to move expeditiously to hire a coach, but made clear that while he welcomes input, he will be the one making the decision.

"I am using external resources," Brandon said in an e-mail.

Using a search firm allows an athletic director to contact coaches through a third party, thus showing a bit of discretion.

Search firms are not a part of the decision-making process, but they often do the legwork, gauging interest of potential candidates employed by other schools.

Search firms also typically vets a candidate.

The flow here is that Brandon will say to the search firm "What about Coach X" and the firm will investigate and report one of the following:

A) X has no interest

B) X has a skeleton in his closet

C) X has interest, here is where negotiations start

If a search firm is actually being used, I think we can deduce that the obvious candidates (Miles and Hoke) are ruled out at this point. It indicates that Brandon is probably going to try to hire somebody he's not personally connected to.

I think you're right about vetting being part of what a search firm is likely to do, but I don't agree with your conclusion about Miles and Hoke. Regardless of how well Brandon personally knows a candidate, he still needs a third-party to vet that person and also--as you suggest with point C--to provide advice on the negotiations.

The search firm is evidence that Miles and Hoke are not the top targets, but it doesn't follow that they have been ruled out. We will probably end up settling for one of them if all the A-list guys turned us down. Hoke would definitely accept, and I think Miles would accept if he thinks he's on thin ice at LSU.

70% chance it's Hoke - the safe choice (to DB) says he wants to come here

25% chance it's Miles - the risky bold choice (to DB) says he wants to come here

5% someone else - nobody else looks like they want to come here or leave current team

the search firm if it is Hoke?  Hoke would crawl here if Brandon just called him....I think the longer this goes the less it looks like Hoke.  At least this is what I tell myself so I can sleep at night.

Hoke is a nice option to sit on.  DB knows if all the options fall by the wayside, he still can get Hoke here.  The longer this goes, the less successful the search has been in finding a candidate with mutual interest.  With signing day coming soon, at some point DB has to say "To hell with it, call Hoke."
