10/30/2017 - 12:12pm The Tragically Hip

Thank you for The Hip!

Been a tough week since Gord's passing.  That was a nice bright spot.

08/29/2016 - 9:12pm I saw the title to this post

I saw the title to this post and immediately thought to myself "this is our life"

I used to like this blog. I now love it. Brian has wove my two favorite things in life (outside of my wife and kids) into one post. Michigan Football and The Tragically Hip.

Since, Gord was diagnosed I have been mesmerized by the outpouring of support for him by his fans. Which culminated with me and my wife making the trek to Hamilton for one of the last shows.

It seems I witnessed a whole country come together over him and his band mates. Something we don't see much in this country much anymore.

The best corollary I see is this blog and its love for Michigan football.

The last lyric of the song in Brian's title is "and disappointing me is getting you down". And it the last lyric Gord sang in that night in Kingston. And it is something we have felt as Michigan fans since 2006 or maybe before.

This I see Harbaugh and Boys showing us their Music @ Work while armed with will and determination and, grace, too.

Go Blue! And Godspeed Gordon Downie!

09/28/2012 - 5:02pm Vanilla Java Porter...

the best beer (quite possibly) ever made.  Definitely, Atwater's best.

09/17/2012 - 12:52pm I know

Brian said something about averting your eyes....but I had to look.  Did anyone else notice the price on that ticket?  $50?  Wow.  I hope they don't keep going up at that rate....

04/12/2012 - 2:07pm Weak...

really weak.  Should have led to a suspension.  Period.

04/12/2012 - 2:05pm boy...

I just don't get it.  I live in EL...and they were giving me crap about Stonum last this?  I don't know how Izzo gets away with it....

04/09/2012 - 1:39pm Amen!

Hoke's, Bielien's, and Mattison's on the house!

03/27/2012 - 11:43am Heading to...

Lincoln.  Booked hotel in January.  Visited West Lafayette and Champaign the last two years...looking forward seeing Lincoln.

03/07/2012 - 10:09am Where's the love?

For Atwater Brewery?  To me they have the best beer in the state!

02/29/2012 - 3:02pm Real nice idea...

I like the following:

1) Limit to men's basketball, football, hockey players (no teams, no plays, no mascots, no kittens, no muppets, etc. will be eligible).

2) First year of voting: All players from those sports who has used up their eligibility (starting with those who graduated/used up eligibility in fall '04/winter or spring '05) are on the ballot.  Also, eligible would be any coach who no longer coaches for the university and left/was fired/retired post 2005.

3) All subsequent years of voting (maybe make May the voting/inducting month) are based on those who used their eligibility the previous fall or that winter/spring.  Also eligible in subsequent years, will be all those that were previously eligible, not voted in, but were named on at least 50% of ballots in the previous year.  Also, eligible would be any coach who no longer coaches for the university and left/was fired/retired post 2005 plus received at least 50% of the vote the previous year.

4) All eligible persons being named on at least 85% of ballots would be enshrined.  There would be no size requirement for any class.

Let's get this done.

01/25/2012 - 1:38pm 22-9 is my guess...

Losses: @ohio

Toss Ups: @MSU, ohio, @NW, @ILL

I think they get one of the toss ups to get to 22-9 (12-6 in the B1G).  Which I guess will get them a first round B1G tournament bye, then win their first game, and toss up on second, so I would say 23-10 overall.  Probable 5th seed in Big Dance.

01/06/2012 - 12:04pm I am loving this thread....

but I am not sure why?

12/07/2011 - 9:00am Not so fast...

I know we lose Martin, RVB, and Molk....but still get 16/17 starters back (if you include Stonum as a starter).  I'd say that's pretty good...especially when one of them is a senior quarterback!

MSU has13 starters back (5 on offense...they get decimated at WR and 8 on D).  I'd say with a new QB and our senior QB...we should be in good position to break the skid against them.

Alabama scares me....but after looking into it....I am not sure how much.  They have 13 starters (assuming only Richardson leaves but they might have more) coming back (7 on O and 6 on D)....and 28 back from their two deep.

We have (by my count) 36 back from our two a good class coming in and last years class will have another year under their belts.  If the Dline potential problems can be solved (come on, Big Will!)....I think next year has a chance to be as good record wise but better in terms of Big Ten Championship.  Brian has been saying we need to get to 2013 before being back....but I am beginning to think otherwise.

12/04/2011 - 6:17pm I would say this

thread isn't as moronic as your tagline.

11/22/2011 - 10:14am Awesome...

Hip reference....might be the greatest band (especially live) that I have ever seen/heard.  Don't know/see a lot of people who know of them!!!

10/14/2011 - 11:22am They all were

tough but 2001 has to be it.  I was in the stands and just couldn't believe what had just happened.  It just seemed so unfair at the moment.  I sat in the stands for about 30 minutes afterwards just stunned.  Then went back to the tailgate I was at (it was mixed company) and had to listen Spartan slappies act all smug about a win they shouldn't have had.  I ended up walking home.

One other point, it wasn't Saban and was Bobby Williams, Charles Rogers, and TJ Duckett.  Just knowing that Rogers went on to semi-destroy the Lions makes it a bit tougher to swallow in retrospect.

10/14/2011 - 11:17am I would also

nominate the 1987 game...when D. Brown (I think?) threw something like seven interceptions and yet Michigan still only lost by 6.  That was tough one to take.

09/13/2011 - 12:25pm I'm with you...

I am just sitting back and taking this year in without much expectations.  As flawed as it was a great win!  As flawed as Denard is....he seems like a great person and he is an exceptional athlete.  Most exciting player I have seen in quite some time.

09/08/2011 - 7:58pm Dare I say...

App State under the lights?

09/08/2011 - 7:56pm Going easy..

just drinking mugs of Miller my fantasy football draft and need to keep the stomach functional.

09/02/2011 - 1:22pm I love it...

I am drinking the Kool Aid!!! If Brian is optimistic...then so am I.

Just heard Karsch predict 9-3 for M on the radio....I think that is doable.

09/02/2011 - 9:13am I'm wearing my M polo

in East Lansing!! I love it.  Love the looks.  Can't wait to put my butt in my seat at 3:30 tomorrow!!!  It is time!!!

08/31/2011 - 1:10pm I know it has....

been mentioned before (including above) but holy cow is Karsch is tall!!!

08/31/2011 - 12:58pm That clip

of Omameh on "that lb from ND" is just awesome.  This line is talented....much improved over the 2008 debacle.

08/29/2011 - 3:45pm Why

Is it BS? Doesn't seem like stretch for them to visit...commit maybe but not visit.

08/29/2011 - 3:40pm Looks like

Brady also said Fitz could also start over Shaw.  I hope all this competition at these spots is a good thing!!!

08/29/2011 - 3:04pm Just heard....

that it is mis-information.  His agent is saying he hasn't been released.

08/23/2011 - 2:28pm I don't think there is bad...

seat in the house.  I like anything about halfway up to about 3/4th's the way up...any section.  At times I like the end zone seats because of the perspective it gives you on line play....overall though I like the corners about halfway can see the whole field and get some idea on the holes/line play.

08/23/2011 - 10:44am Congrats!

Your valuable input will be greatly missed.

08/19/2011 - 11:44am Interesting comment...

"Funny to see that the OSU vs Miami National Championship game was cheaters vs cheaters... much like Auburn vs Oregon..  Sad days for college football indeed. "

I know he is quite villified on here but Mike Valenti has been saying for a couple of years now that the only way to truly compete on a national level these days in college football is to break the NCAA's rules.  I'm not sure I believe him but I am starting too.

08/19/2011 - 9:07am This is the key for me...

"As all good Michigan fans know, Manball can be effective in most games as long as you have better talent and you aren’t playing from behind."

You can't play manball (which for me is power running on first and second and maybe play action on third) from behind.  Just doesn't work real well.

What comes to mind is the tosu teams with Troy Smith at QB....they spread it out and let Troy use his talents.  I don't think anyone was questioning their toughness...their athleticsm on a national scale, maybe, but not their toughness.

I would also say that Alabama under Saban was "Manball"....but they were effective.

My point.  Either works.  It depends on how talented you are.  Plus the sign of a good coach is using what you have to be most effective.  Pragmatism is the key.  I think Hoke/Borges have shown they will do that.

08/18/2011 - 1:26pm Would not be....

a good look.  Age = 39.

08/17/2011 - 12:02pm Awesome...

Reservoir Dogs it.

08/17/2011 - 11:59am I like it.

17 days.  Can't wait.

08/17/2011 - 9:36am Myth

Our secondary is full of smurf's.

Debunked by the fact that we have two six footers and two five eleveners projected to start.  Which is on par or better than most of the Big Ten.

08/16/2011 - 3:57pm A couple of ideas

1) Pierce Lake in Chelsea

2) The Majestic in Hartland

3) Lyon Oaks in South Lyon

All three are favorites of mine and not too far from Ann Arbor.

08/16/2011 - 1:51pm Go Blue...

Mr. McGary!!! Join the will be rewarded!!!

08/09/2011 - 3:09pm Unless he wants to be branded...

as the next Sparty coach...he won't.

08/09/2011 - 3:08pm Last time I remember Game Day being...

in Ann Arbor, they were at AAGO for UM-ND in 2003....but I think some others have said they were on university grounds for the 2007 UM-OSU game but I was there and don't quite remember that....although that might have something to do with amount of beer I drank that day.

08/09/2011 - 2:59pm I guess..

its walkable...but not a walk I would take.  Plus not sure what bars you would hit other than Cub's AC on Industrial (which is a favorite of mine been going there since I was single digits).  I would do the first part if the wife wants to see Ann Arbor...otherwise I would get to the golf course, park, and commence drinking for as long as possible.

08/09/2011 - 2:51pm What does

this mean?!?!?!?!

08/09/2011 - 9:32am Love it,

just love it.  The long pass from Denard to Roundtree (I think) was pretty.  Just so damn excited for this year to begin.

07/22/2011 - 9:36am Awesome...

I have chills.  So pumped for the season now!!!

07/13/2011 - 10:17am Here is a guacamole...

to pair with that salsa.

4 whole avocados (diced)

1 jalapeno (2 if you like it hot)

1 small red onion (diced)

2 tablespoons of cilantro (chopped)

1 tomato (diced)

2 limes, juiced

Salt and pepper to taste

Combine in a bowl and mash a bit.

07/13/2011 - 10:14am Absolutely...

not.  Cilantro is the best....goes with almost anyting!!

07/13/2011 - 10:13am Wow...

that get's my juices flowing....Hoke has to be "that man" for us.

07/13/2011 - 9:30am They send this out...

every year.

07/12/2011 - 1:54pm This is a joke...

...but real.  I live in East across the street from the campus....and all the Sparty slappies are nervous.  B1G. Time.  I get that money comment constantly when I bring up Hoke the positive momentum he is generating.  I'm telling you.  They know.  They know their time is done.  And that the universe will return to normal.

07/11/2011 - 10:18am Can't

stinking wait for the season.  So much Hoke...I mean, Hope.

07/11/2011 - 9:43am All of this

is making more and more excited for the 2011 version of Maize and Blue!!!  I know in the grand scheme of things recruiting only means so much but boy, oh boy, does this feel good.
