Amazed to read that some alumns are already calling for Harbaugh

Submitted by Webber's Pimp on

I'll repeat last night's post and those of you who are critical of the current coaching staff would be well served to internalize it...

This is the first time in 3 years RRod has had a QB in his system that fits exactly what he wants to do. And what are the results? The kid (in only his second start I might add) runs for 250 yards and passes for another 250 yards. Nevermind the fact that only 8 players in college history have accomplished such a feet and that Rich Rod has been the architect behind two of them. Don't look now but the Buckeyes are getting nervous... Rich Rod started a walkon QB for the better part of his first year. Anybody who's critical having witnessed the last 3 weeks of our offensive packages has been reading the Freep too much. The bottom line is the cupboard was bare when Rod got to A2 and I'm sorry to say this is still a below average (talent wise) Michigan squad in comparison to the Carr and Moeller years. We are a talent depleted team on defense!!! There's not a scheme or a coach in America that can change that! Despite this Rod has beaten ND twice already. Note that last weekend's victory is something we've only managed to do 4 times over the past 30 years (ie. road victories at ND). Cut the guy some slack for Christ sakes!! Once we get the right personel on defense I guarantee you the results will be there. Until then support your coach and your school. Calling for his head only promotes further program instability which is exactly what the MSU's and OSU's of this world would like...

Oner last note...In today's college football landscape Michigan faces more challenges than ever before in it's history. We have higher academic standards than most schools. Most schools also have a natural advanatge over us in terms of weather (selling palm trees etc). Unlike Ohio State, Texas, Florida, and USC we do NOT reside in a hotbed of recruiting talent. We have to go out of state to get most of our players and in doing so we have to go head to head against home state schools who always have a natural recruiting advantage against us. So what does it all add up to? In my mind we need to have a system in place (read: the spread offense) to compensate for some of these disadvantages. Right now we have to win with less talent than ever before until we can prove to the country that we are still a national powerhouse. Our slide began during the last few years of Lloyd Carr's regime (his last few recruiting classes were horrible) and it's up to RRod to change things. I have no doubt that he will get the job done. The offense is already in place. Now it's just a matter of getting enough athletes on defense. The only thing that can stop us now is our own fan base...

You've really been keeping track of my posts?  That doesn't embarrass you?

So, you want to know my schedule?  Of course, you could always dig and do a little research yourself and you'll notice that I was away before, during and after the UConn game, but posting fairly regularly afterward.  Where was I?  Minding my own fucking business.

How many players have left his cupboard this year alone?

Four, IIRC.   LaLota, Emilien, White, Turner.

But those were the ones who transferred.  Here's a more in depth look

http://touchthebanner.blogspot.com/2010/09/davion-rogers-ex-wolverine.h…

no less than 11 defensive recruits signed during Rodriguez's tenure (Class of 2008 through Class of 2010) have already departed.  That means 31.4% (11/35) of defensive recruits brought in during that time have already left.

If Harbaugh wants to come in and run this very same offense, and can bring in 11 5-star defensive recruits (one at each position) who are all entirely prepared to play well the second they set foot in Ann Arbor, then that sounds like a great change to make.

If he can't, then, lets hope Blue stays the course.  I love watching this offense with this type of player.  It was painful two years ago.    The defense, eventually, will come around.

I created it. I have been using it for months. You did not create it. You stole it and have appropriated it for your own use. I don't know why you think that other people here won't notice it, but apparently you're not the brightest tool in the drawer. Handle-jacking is lame enough, but avatar-jacking is seriously pathetic because it's so fucking obvious. Get yourself something different, maybe something using a photo of Charlie Sheen. He's popular around here as an avatar subject.

its really a super dumb discussion to be having.

this year will end one of 2 ways...

(1)  we win enough to be bowl eligible, get the extra practice, play a bowl game and we move on with coach rod, building momentum towards the future with the potential for an experienced Offense that could top the nation next year.

-or-

(2) we implode again, missing a bowl, and coach rod gets the boot, and THEN we can have the discussion of "who's next?"

I think we'll be fine - 7-5 seems quite attainable with the offense motoring the way it has. If we do implode, though, I'm FINE with saying enough is enough and moving on.

BUT, we're 3-0, with an excellent opportunity to start out 5-0. everyone needs to chill the fuck out and let this season unfold a week at a time.

Ask these folks why they assume that Harbaugh would take the job?

He has a nice job with low expectations.  Palo Alto is a beuatiful area of the country.  He has already gathered what talent that he can there and has his system in place.  He went 8 and 5 and they called that a great season.  If he beats Cal, he is set.  If he came here, he would have to blow-up the team and gather "his type" of players.  He would face the unrealistic expectations of the fan base who apparently assume that his "guarantee" to beat OSu applies decades later.  Many of his former fans/team mates told him to drop dead after his comments a few years back.  So, other than the fact that he played here 25 years ago, why would he leave Standford to come to Michigan?  (He might love to be asked, but that doens't mean he would  take the job.)

To me, these discussions are a waste of time unitl we see how the season and the NCAA thing plays out.  But the assumption that Harbaugh is ours for the asking is starting to get to me.

I like the original post.  The only addition I'll make is that Harbaugh has the added advantage of being in California and feasting off USC's probation.  True, he's had to fend off other PAC-10 schools, ND and us, but a legitimate Stanford provides California recruits who are serious about academics everything they need (and then some).  He will not have that advantage here.

Defensively, we're really struggling and I think blame needs to placed on both Lloyd Carr and Rich Rod.  Sure, the cupboard was bare, but it's not like Rich Rod's recruits are doing much better either.  There's no depth and players are still out of position on way too many plays.  There is also a talent shortage.  Another worrisome trend is the transfer situation.  The Emilien and LaLota transfers were inexplicable.  There's clearly some turmoil on defense and hopefully with more winning we'll have better players.  But it's not something that can be fixed overnight and no savior will be able to patch those holes.

Looking at what Harbaugh has done at Stanford is very impressive.  People are going to call for that whenever this team goes through any sort of turmoil.  In my opinion it's not RR that should be on any sort of hot seat, it's Greg Robinson.  I understand being young and inexperienced is a big disadvantage but GERG looks lost out there sometimes.  On offense we have seen improvement from year 1 to 2 and now big time in year three.  On defense we've stayed the same or digressed to some degree.  If it's still looking bleek at the end of this season for the defense I think RR has to sit down with GERG and let him know that he needs to do a better job.

How many times does it need to be said that Michigan's influential alums either support RR or they respect both Dave Brandon and MSC's ability to decide what is best for the university? Michigan alums that give large donations (6, 7 or 8 figure amounts) don't use their power and influence to request a new head football coach.

While there may be some folks that complain they generally don't have the ear of Michigan's administration.

I learned from another campus that typically the alumni who gripe loudly in public are neither important donors nor active in the alumni association. Big donors and engaged volunteers try to use their influence effectively--they don't bitch to newspapers or call radio shows. So the loud cranks can invoke Harbaugh's name all they want; it doesn't mean the AD or U will listen to them. They don't stand to lose much by ignoring them.
