Life gets in the way of Michigan football

Submitted by Wendyk5 on

I just found out that kickoff for the UConn game is at 3:30, and wouldn't you know, that's the same day as my mother-in-law's 70th birthday party, which starts at 5. I'm in Chicago, so for me the game starts at 2:30, but still - I'm going to miss at least the last quarter. I told my husband my Sportstap app will be running in high gear. I'm also hoping for a mgoliveblog. This is gonna suck.

Honestly, we will be up by at least 2 touchdowns by the time you have to step away.  We're going to be playing ANGRY against UConn.  If there's any game that this team is going to play with a chip on their shoulder, it's this one.

I seem to go on vacation in the fall...watched last year's ND game at the pool bar in Maui, PSU '08 at a Hooters in Cancun (could've skipped that one), but am going to be in Israel this year for PSU (gone for 2 weeks and planned for one of the weeks to be the bye week). Anyone know any good sports bars in  Tel Aviv? My wife, who does not watch football, has been pushing me to find one so I'm not grumpy all day. At least she understands priorities.

I have a good friend of mine who just set their wedding date: September 10, 2011. I promptly informed them that I will be unable to attend. Wasn't that good of a friend anyway

My cousin is getting married on the day of the UMass game. At least its the 1AA game. My wife and I got married on Aug 12 (celebrated our 4th anniversary yesterday). We chose a summer wedding to avoid college football season and so we can get as many family members to the wedding. My wife is a huge South Carolina and Furman football addict. I have turned her to Michigan for the big ten.

My wife's dumb cousin, who I typically really like, and who professes to be a Michigan fan, got married last September 12, better known as "Tate... with a keeper... up the middle... to the HOUSE!" day.   Talk about causing problems for a whole family.   I was unofficially appointed the Mobile App Captain for the ceremony, and the groom was updated within minutes of kissing the bride.   Jackass.

Boycotting all weddings now. I'm already missing my best friend's 21st in Vegas because it's on next year's OSU weekend. At least she's known me since 3rd grade so she understands the obsession, and I do feel bad.

Well, I am in Ann Arbor, but most of my friends are gone for the summer or busy with work.  You might not be missing out on as much as you think (unless all your friends are here having raucous parties each evening, their wildest desires bought and paid for by endless funds earned in the illicit sex trafficking trade, in which case, sorry you're missing out)

Go late to the party.  Tell your husband to deal with it.  If he gives you any attitude, remind him how freekin lucky he is to have a wife that is such a huge Michigan fan that she is a long-standing member of MGoblog and finds the prospect of missing the 4th quarter of the opener to be a huge problem.

You are a wife to be treasured.

Since a few people on this thread have posted stories of their fandom (missing weddings / celebrations for Mich football), I have to put a few of mine on here:

1.  When my wife and I were thinking about having a child a few years back, we decided to target a March, April or May birth, so that it would be well after the season, but not to close that we could not take our annual trip to AA for a game.

2.  My brother was planning his engagement part on the date of the 2006 OSU game.  He put down a small deposit on the place to hold the date.  I told him that unless he picked a different weekend, I would not be able to attend (despite being his best man).  I paid the $500 deposit that he couldn't get refunded when he moved it.

3.  My wife's parents wanted to take us on vacation to Aruba for our anniversary.  In September.  We declined.

Sick?  Maybe.  Would I change a thing?  No.

I had a cousin get married at the same time as the Michigan PSU game years ago.  I had someone from the service staff wheel up a television to the back of the dining hall (at Indianwood CC).  While the party ensued, myself and bunch of other guys watched the game.  My cousin wasn't too happy, but oh well......the game was more important to me.

Your cousin sounds like a bit of a tool (no offense).  First, he has the nerve to schedule a wedding on Mich PSU saturday?  Then, he has the nerve to be critical of your awesome problem solving skills?

When the Dallas-Cincinnati game was on last week, she made disparaging noises about it being football season already. But, already she knows that on saturdays, college football is what's on. She'll sit down and watch with me, just rooting for whoever she feels like. We live in Columbus now and sometimes she wishes I could be nice about OSU and that we could go and tailgate. She feels like I should support them so we can get along with our friends. Saying this she understands that I'm an alumnus and a fan and she deals with it. But I will say that I know a two year old who if going to root for Michigan, definitely NOT the buckeyes, if I hand anything to say about it.

goes way back. My weekends have revolved around M football since I was 12. Thats when we moved to Cincinnati. The 70's. I would sit in the driveway on Saturdays in the fall and listen to WJR crackling thru the speakers, barely audible at times. My attitude for an entire week would hinge on the outcome. Then that last game in Nov would come and TV! Family events were planned around that game, or included it. So years pass. Whats changed? ABC, ESPN,BTN and I can drive to the Big House. Oh yeah, DVR in extreme cases.

The thing that sucks for me is that with the exception of the UConn game, I may miss every single game. We're going full tilt at GM wich means ten hour Saturdays too. The kick in balls is that we've been experiencing lots of downtime which means that the "volunteer" Saturdays can become mandatory to make up for the time lost. It's already happened once, and we've had lots of downtime since, so I'm pretty sure they'll just say the hell with it and make every Saturday mandatory.

She can wear it while you watch the game - bring her into the fold.

Benefits:

1.  Get to watch the game.

2.  Husband thinks you REALLY care about his family.

3.  Husband owes you big (see above).

4.  Future B-days and X Mass shopping a snap - all MGoBlog Store gear.

Drawbacks:

1.  MIL may have 1,000 questions about the game that you have to answer.

2.  She may want to watch all games with you.

3.  Lose someone to fetch food and beers (MILs usually good for that)

Don't worry all the back ups will be in in the fourth quarter anyways. Seriously though I feel your pain I will be in Indiana and am praying that the game will be televised down there.

But it depends on the game.  I'll be going back for 4 or 5 games this year but the other games (see UMass and BGSU) I honestly don't care if I miss.

For this guy yeah the season opener against UConn um no thanks I have plans.  But I just can't stand the people who are like "I will never miss a Michigan game even if it's going to be a baby seal clubbing".  It's pathetic because ya know what there are more important things in my life than watching Michigan curb stomp some FCS team.

It's because it's the first game. I've been waiting a long time to see them in action again, see what they're going to look like. I really wanted to enjoy the whole three hours of it, the live blogging, the yelling at the TV, etc. If this was a middle of the season game, I wouldn't mind so much.

It sucks when life gets in the way of Michigan football. If I have to go somewhere on game day, I tape the game so I can watch it when I get home. It's not the same as watching it live, but at least I can see what happened on every play.
