Who are the top 10 active coaches in CBB?

Submitted by Human Torpedo on

I've personally noticed quite a bit of separation (be it Hall of Fame resume overall or just breaking through in a big way lately) between these 10 coaches and the rest of D-I virtually. The 10 coaches IMO that are head and shoulders above the pack are:

1. Coach K

2. Jay Wright

3. Roy Williams

4. Self

5. Izzo (still got the Hall of Fame results historically)

6. Calipari

7. Mark Few

8. Beilein

9. Tony Bennett

10. Sean Miller

Edit: Let me be clear, this isn't just for right now, but for a rating of each guy's whole career at his particular school

Good list but one of the great things about college b-ball is that there are a lot of great coaches around. Greg Marshall is fantastic, Coach Mack, may not like him but Jim Boeheim. Not to mention so many coaches who fit so well at their respective mid majors and can really coach.

It's hard to separate actual coaching ability (talent identification, player development, game planning and in-game adjustments) from other program-building activities (recruiting, publicity, donor/alum relationships) from bottom-line results (winning games, championships, and NBA draft picks).

Program building often comes with inherent historical or program advantages/disadvantages. Bottom-line results often means all of the shadiness involved in dirty recruiting, shoe company relationships, and looking past player misconduct, be it criminal or just immoral.

I'll take Beilein and Jay Wright in the first category. I'm sure there are a solid number that could fit in here from mid-major and low-major programs.

It's hard to argue with Calipari, Self and K in the latter. Izzo used to be in the middle category for me but now falls more into this category the more that comes out about how he let a lot of his guys get away with pretty much anything.

Wins?
Least losses?
Win Percentage?
Fewest scandals?
Most players drafted?
Longest pro careers?
Most players graduated?
Number of players who’ve stayed out of police stations?
Raised the most money?
Number of former players consider to be fine members of society?

Far too many factors. Need to define the parameters.

If you look at the last 7 years , not many will have a better resume than Beilein. 6 tournament appearances 2 B1G regular season titles 2 B1G tourney titles 4 sweet sixteens 2 final fours 2 championship appearances Beilein is definitely top 5 if we look at it with a recency bias.

Not based on recruiting but on coaching the talent on roster.

1.  Mike Kryzweski

2. Tony Bennett

3. Jay Wright

4.  John Beilein

5.  Mark Few

6.  Gregg Marshall

7.  John Calipari

8.  Bob Huggins

9.  BIll Self

10. Chris Mack

Izzo  and Roy Williams would be in the next level.  Izzo has had lots of talent on his roster in recent years, but does not seem to have a semblance of an offensive scheme.  Roy Williams is just a cheerleader on the bench and seems to be just rolling the ball out in practice. I think Roy was a much better coach while he was at Kansas.

Wow if you're just taking out recruiting altogether, I have Coach K way down the list and I have Beilein 2 and Wright 3. In my eyes, the only difference between Beilein and Wright is that Wright gets the 5 stars we desperately want

He doesn't land 4 McDonald's All Americans every year.  Also, if you're talking about careers, how do you not have Boeheim?  Dude went to Final Four with Sherman Douglas, Rony Seikaly and Derrick Coleman over 30 years ago.  His teams may underacheieve in regular seasons recently, but ask Izzo if he wants to see the 2-3 zone.

Disclosure, I live in Lexington and despise UK. Calipari is a great recruiter/ agent, not a great coach. His only championship is with key veteran players from another coach. He fielded team after team with 5 or 6 NBA first round picks each year, yet can't win one with his NBA rosters while the teams he faces and losses to are lucky to have 1. Players are either NBA ready already or never get better, see Matthews. They've had success, but with the enormous talent gap he processed over everyone else he faced, there should be at least 1 championship with his players, but more like 2 or 3. Imagine Bielein with a team with that much talent and then tell me Calipari is a coach instead of being almost an NBA agent.

If the criteria is “right now” I don’t see how Izzo can be ahead of Beilein. The Staee fans (and national media) keep changing the narrative to say Izzo is still better. We always heard Izzo was “Mr. March” and only tournament games matter. Now that he only has two wins in the last three tournaments now they bring up his regular season or Big Ten Tournament wins. They tell Michigan football fans to stop living in the past but they are doing the same thing. Right now Beilein is better.
