TomVH: QB Brett Hundley Offered
This is an offer that I was expecting to happen sooner, rather than later. QB Brett Hundley out of Chandler High School, in Arizona, received an offer from Michigan today. "They called my coach, Coach Ewan, and then he told me they had offered," said Hundley.
This one is exciting for me, because it's another Michigan recruit in my home state. I saw Brett play this past season, and he's the real deal. He's a 6-foot-4, 210-pound athletic dual threat quarterback. He says his strengths are, "Leadership, mobility, I'm coachable, and I have a pretty strong arm. I do think I need to work on my footwork, though." I would add that academics are a strong point for Brett, since he carries a 3.9 GPA.
Hundley holds offers now from Arizona, ASU, LSU, Oregon, Nebraska, Stanford, UCLA, Washington, and Michigan just to name a few. He hasn't started to focus on recruiting yet, and told me, "No one's in the lead right now. Everything is wide open for me. I'm going to start taking trips in June, or July. After that I'll start all my officials, when I'm allowed to." When asked if Michigan will receive one of those visits, he said, "I'm definitely going to talk to my dad about that one."
Chandler High is in spring practice right now, and I will be heading out to watch this coming week. I'll have some practice footage, and possibly a video interview sometime later this week.
We are in a good position to grab a very talened QB in this class. Between Braxton Miller and Cardale Jones. Or if we can get Marquise Williams or Hudley or Kevin Soussa. We will finally be looking at a deep stable of capable QB's. Always feels good to know you have 3-4 solid QB's
Isn't coming here.
Edit: I see this was adressed below, carry on.
You'll notice the first play of his tape is a read option keeper, too. I couldn't really gauge his interest level, so we'll have to wait and see if Michigan gets a visit out of him.
His read option fakes look pretty damn good for a high school junior.
6'4" and 210? Strong arm? Successor to DG? High GPA? Yes please! Only thing I can't judge is his speed. I can't tell if he's fast but runs effortlessly like Pryor or if he has average speed. Regardless, It'll be hard to get him up here with that list of schools, but we've got academics over everyone on that list which could help.
Totally agree about speed. I couldn't gauge it either. I am leaning towards it is just average but his decision making seems really good which is by far more important.
On a couple of those runs he's making the defense look like a bunch of preschoolers. I'd say he's got speed.
He doesn't look like a burner (e.g., Denard), but he never goes down on first contact.
Stanford is a much better academic institution than Michigan.
Better? Debatable. Much better? You're smoking something.
UC Berkeley is Michigan's west coast twin (even similar colors) and most people in the Bay area would tell you that Stanford and Berkeley are on even footing academically.
Doubtful.
@Banks We're not getting Braxton Miller.
I know. Meant the whole Braxton/Jones situation. If OSU offers Jones, he would probably commit, then Miller goes either ND or maybe Mich. If not Jones goes most likely to Mich or MSU.
Make no mistake, Braxton is OSU's #1 target this year. Cardale Jones is rumored to be on the "soon-to-be-offered" list but I assure you that Cardale Jones will not be scaring off Braxton Miller. Being honest here /not instigating/ but OSU has a substantially better shot at getting both than UM getting Miller. Cardale jones on the OTOH...you never know.
Are Chaparrel and Chandler in the same Division and/or League?
I like how the staff is still recruiting Arizona. I like to see these west coast kids play for Michigan.
Chandler, Hamilton, and Brophy are 5A-I, and Centennial and Chaparral are 5A-II

Tom, I know this is a "highlight" video, but is his accuracy normally this good? I figured since you have seen him play, you would have a good idea. Some of those WRs are wide open but he threw some nice slant and deep outs.
Yes please.
Can we recruit their center, too? Dude put every snap between Hundley's belly button and thorax. After last year (post-Molk, obvs.) that would be terrific.
Is it just me, or does it look like what you would expect Culpepper would have looked like running the spread.
He's a banger. He's a much thinner, younger, and more athletic version of Culpepper, though.
Agreed, this kid looks much more shifty than Culpepper.
Not the typical spread runner that you see, or at least not what I have seen. This guy seems tough and he is running right through some tacklers and even partially hurdled a defender. He isn't afraid to take a hit or two and it seems like you are screwed if you don't wrap him up. I want to see him in the winged helmets.
I expected to see a white guy in the video after reading the name "Brett Hundley". Not that it matters, but sounds white.
Looks like a good prospect.
I immediately wondered if he was the son of Todd Hundley. I don't think so after a bit of digging.
To be honest i hope we get Marquise Williams, hes athletic, fast, and has a strong arm. Kevin Sousa would be good but I think we can get Williams Its good we are in good position to recruit a few top-notch QBs, but we need commitments with OL. Unfortunately Trai Turner commited to LSU. We seem to be good on his teamate Austin, then with Posada, Andre Y., and Zettel.
Looks really impressive, hopefully we can get him on a visit.
Kid looks good out there. I like the wiggle and his throwing ability outside of the pocket, and the grades are really a positive. My only concern with these guys is that they rely so heavily on their athleticism when the rush comes that you are never sure how accurate they are when they need to just whistle a ball into a window. He had a could of nice completions into coverage, but that is always the one fault that seems to pop up with these uber-athletes. Still, would be great if he gave UM a look.
Glad you can provide us with such quality info. on a prospect more local to you.
I live in Chandler and have seen Hundley in person on a few occasions, and he's definitely the whole package (speed, strength, VERY strong arm and reasonably accurate). He actually seems quite similar overall to Devin Gardner.
The one weakness I saw in limited scouting was indecisiveness in the pocket -- he didn't seem to have a grasp of exactly what he wanted to do on some passing plays. But he also didn't take off at the first hint of pressure; he let the play develop and sometimes just ended up waiting too long.
It should also be noted that much of the highlight video is footage against Hamilton (black unis, silver helmets), which is probably the best team in the state and one with several D-I prospects. This isn't your typical "awesome athlete physically destroys 5-foot-8 future engineers" highlight reel.
And last year was his first as a full-time starter, so he's got plenty of room for improvement. Obviously I'd love to see him at UM.
I would actually disagree with the "very strong arm" part. He looks like a good overall player (I'd expect him to be a 4-star when Rivals ranks him), but there were several times where it seemed like the receivers were waiting an extra split second for the ball to get to them. He did have a couple throws that were rockets, but they didn't seem to be the norm.
He has excellent balance when he runs the ball, despite being 6'4". He reminds me a little bit of Masoli in that respect, although Masoli isn't quite that big. And hopefully Hundley is smarter than Masoli, too. It would be hard not to be.
Perhaps I should clarify about the "very strong arm" comment. His throws from the pocket won't evoke comparisons to Brett Favre, but I've seen him make some downfield throws while rolling out that were extremely impressive. I was referring more to distance than velocity.
Masoli's a good comparison though. Hundley is very strong and has excellent balance, which makes him tough to bring down.
Which would definitely help in his transition. The only thing I would say is a definite for him to work on would be to keep his eyes down field when he starts to run. I noticed that on plays when the pocket collasped he took off and never looked for his receivers , but overall very good prospect.
He kinda reminded me of Kevin Newsome.
Hopefully Hundley is better.
I was also expecting a white guy. He looks very polished for a high school junior.
this kid is a fantastic athlete and plays a very physical game. He looks like the type of QB who would certainly have much success in RR's system.
His ball fakes on the option plays are rediculous for a high school junior.
They're ridiculous, too.
No no, they're diculous again. Hence, rediculous.
lets recruit number 77. he was keeping up at about 2:20 in, he was almost up there with Hudley
Wow he seems to squeeze the ball into some pretty tight windows. Also he is shifty and at least has the speed to seperate from high school defenders. Looks like a prospect that I would like to see in Ann Arbor.
I watched Hundley play twice this year. Incredible. A true man-among-boys; of course, it's just HS. I thought he looked like a HS-version of Vince Young -- sorry to bring him up on this Michigan blog. Obviously, not quite as fast as Robinson (who is?) or as accurate as Brady, but I can't remember a Michigan QB with a total package anywhere close to Hundley's. He was the big school QB of the year as a junior and almost single-handedly led Chandler into the playoffs. I sent Michigan a letter begging them to get this guy on their radar after the second game of the season (I'm sure my letter went right into the circular file but what the heck). He is as good as his hype but I would be extremely surprised if he gave Michigan much consideration. Mark my words, whatever team lands him will be playing in a BCS bowl game in 4 years. For God's sake, I hope Michigan doesn't schedule his recruiting trip in the winter!!
