Depth Chart By Class Updated
[Eric Upchurch]
An updateable version of this lives under useful stuff in perpetuity, but we bump a new copy of it to the front page annually to remind people it exists. Now it's more important than ever because it actually contains redshirt information, unlike the official roster.
Note that Otis Reese is unsigned and has not made it to the "freshmen" column; all other recruits have, even also-unsigned Ronnie Bell, because he's indicated his recruitment is not open and he would have signed except for his Missouri State basketball LOI.
Positional designations can be fuzzy, of course.

Like "YMRMFSPA" in this site's recruiting profiles, it doesn't say Kaleb Ringer is Sam Sword or even that we think he's a future Sam Sword, just that if he were to reach the outer bounds of reasonable expectation a senior starting Ringer may resemble Sword. For most the original recruiting YMRMFSPA is listed, though I've updated many of the upperclassmen to reflect renewed expectations.

Scholarships are guaranteed for four years. You can tell a player he won't see the field, but you can't just cut him.
January 5th, 2018 at 3:14 PM ^
Dude works at a D2 school so he obviously understands the ins and outs of how P5 school operates.

Can you just give financial aid outside of the FB limits? The individual is no worse off and the conference would be better off.
January 6th, 2018 at 6:30 AM ^
Unless the player isn't cleared to play for medical reasons he counts on the roster. That exemption is spelled out. I don't think having the AD pay players to give up scholarships would pass muster with Compliance.
Financial aid goes through the university offices, not the AD. Football scholarships include the full cost of attendance plus access to some extras. If players went through the financial aid office instead, they'd get whatever they qualified for like other students.
January 6th, 2018 at 12:37 PM ^
It's a B1G rule, so NCAA compliance isn't relevant. The Big 10 could structure it any way they want to, including allowing the aid to be outside the football limitations and administered by the AD. I'm not saying you're wrong, just that I think it should be allowed.

Name Wolverines who were told their scholorship was pulled in less than four years for performance.
Meaning you can't list ones who were kicked off the team for disciplinary reasons like Csont'e York
January 5th, 2018 at 12:50 PM ^
Dwumfour, Mone and Solomon all starting is impossible but will all get plenty of playing time. Solomon the most with Dwum and Mone tied for snaps?

January 5th, 2018 at 12:54 PM ^
Doh! You're right.
January 5th, 2018 at 1:04 PM ^
Something similar WRT Wrs and TEs (6 listed). Also, done if it's uncertain who will actually start, see the 3 OTs listed.
January 5th, 2018 at 1:09 PM ^
Gotcha!
January 5th, 2018 at 12:54 PM ^
I'm only counting 11 seniors, not 12.
January 5th, 2018 at 1:35 PM ^
Yep 11 seniors, good catch.
Also commits is 5 not 4 though that may be intentional with Reese. But then obviously if he does stick, it bumps the freshmen from 32 to 33 while commits would remain at 4.
January 5th, 2018 at 2:20 PM ^
11 seniors from two classes is not a great look for those recruiting classes. Especially if some of them could still leave. Puts things into perspective a little bit, even more so with so few seniors leaving this year.
I'm hoping there is a time soon that there will be 40 or so upper classmen. Looks like that will start to happen after next year.

Is Foug out of eligibity? I did not see him listed??
January 5th, 2018 at 12:59 PM ^
Heard he was in a podcast and saw in thread he was. Not sure if true, but assumed he is done.
January 5th, 2018 at 1:18 PM ^
I'm not sure we'll ever know. Definitely not while we're on the internet.

He was in the class of 2013 and trasferred here so 2017 season was his last year.
January 5th, 2018 at 12:58 PM ^
Didnt SOLOMON burn his redshirt? Shouldnt he have a "!" next to his name?
January 5th, 2018 at 12:59 PM ^
January 5th, 2018 at 1:08 PM ^
Gotcha. Thanks, Biff.
January 5th, 2018 at 1:29 PM ^
i thought the ! designation was only for VIPER(!)
January 5th, 2018 at 1:06 PM ^
edit...I see what you were asking now. My mistake.
January 5th, 2018 at 1:00 PM ^
"!" are given out in the middle of the season. Now that it's over he's been shifted to "sophmore" status.
January 5th, 2018 at 1:00 PM ^
This team sets up nicely for the next three years at a minimum.......of course this assumes that JH will get the coaching bugs worked out and the staff upgraded.
January 5th, 2018 at 1:11 PM ^
*cough* OFFENSIVE TACKLE *cough*
So scary, man.
January 5th, 2018 at 1:35 PM ^
May be Harbuagh and Company felt the 4 OT the year before would be enough? That did not work out well since the best tackle may have had a career ending injury.
January 5th, 2018 at 1:01 PM ^
in sophomore tackles jumps out at me. Ugh.
January 5th, 2018 at 1:16 PM ^
Seniors too.
January 5th, 2018 at 1:15 PM ^
Definitely bring back - Mone, Winovich, Watson.
Probably bring back - Furbush, JBB (maybe he can just play on 1st and 2nd downs?)
Probably firm handshake - Marshall, Bunting.
Definitely firm handshake - Wangler.
January 5th, 2018 at 1:23 PM ^
Don Brown/others bring up Lo Marshall routinely in interviews. He will be back.
January 5th, 2018 at 1:24 PM ^
He played enough in the bowl game that I doubt they would say goodbye to a known commodity that rotated in this defense for a freshman when next year COULD be special.
January 5th, 2018 at 1:38 PM ^
Could see Furbush getting the firm handshake, or jetting of his own accord. Normally a contributer who plays doesn't get that treatment but there is a ton of young LB talent underneath and if some of those redshirts or younger guys project to pass him by autumn then it wouldn't be suprising if he is out.
January 5th, 2018 at 3:54 PM ^
Agree with this assessment, especially Marshall. Don't know where the love for Marshall is coming from. He has underperformed his recruiting hype. We have two younger, more talented guys who need to start getting some reps. He's probably gone unless there is unexpected attrition at another position.
January 5th, 2018 at 1:19 PM ^
If that happens, we'll have the makings of a quality Harbaugh-led football machine in 2018.
Go Blue!
January 5th, 2018 at 1:29 PM ^
January 5th, 2018 at 6:29 PM ^
Yeah, there's basically 0.
January 5th, 2018 at 1:20 PM ^
January 5th, 2018 at 1:25 PM ^
I'm sure already discussed elsewhere but Filiaga isn't a tackle? I thought if Newsome isn't back, Filiaga might start at LT.
January 5th, 2018 at 1:30 PM ^
Wow. Would love to get a DT in the 2018 class. That's the only spot we look thin, IMO.
January 5th, 2018 at 2:07 PM ^
January 5th, 2018 at 1:30 PM ^
Isn't that the play Black hurt his ankle?
January 5th, 2018 at 1:39 PM ^
come back to haunt us in 2023. Sure hope the 2018 season is much better and our 2019 class is more talented.
January 5th, 2018 at 1:50 PM ^
You can get away with one mediocre recruiting class especially when the 2 prior classes had lots of quantity. You just can't have two in a row. Will probably be a smaller class anyway in 2019 too.
January 5th, 2018 at 2:09 PM ^
January 5th, 2018 at 2:27 PM ^
Petit-Frere, Friday and Reese would certainly be a very good end to the class. That said, we're 14th now in the rankings and that includes Reese who may well bail. Plus we aren't in on many other players at this point so this may be more of a top 20 rather than a top 10 class once it all shakes out. It's thin on top talent, I wouldn't call it excellent but it can be a solid class.
January 5th, 2018 at 1:39 PM ^
January 5th, 2018 at 2:03 PM ^
Yep. I'm not seeing a solution to the OL issues anywhere there.
January 5th, 2018 at 2:46 PM ^
Seeing as we have glut of freshmen and sophmores I don't see how you can be so negative about the OL. What would you like to see there?
