OT: Why would Scott Frost go to Nebraska?

Submitted by MGlobules on

Scott Frost is being wooed for both the Nebraska and U Florida jobs; meanwhile, UCF donors are ponying up big  bucks for facilities at that university.

The indoor player facility that Frost is getting is something that Jimbo Fisher has been poor-mouthing about his school's need for all season long, as fans look with increasing ambivalence on his team.

It's not so widely known, but UCF is the biggest public university in the U.S., in a rapidly growing and increasingly pleasant big, cosmopolitan city, with a lot of wealthy donors intent on pushing it past FSU and UF as the state's major program and school--well-situated to do so.

Does Scott go "home" to cold, recruit-limited Nebraska, a place he is known to be ambivalent about, or build something enduring at UCF? I don't know. But the landscape of football in Florida is in flux.

EDIT: A few posters taking it for granted that the guy would want to return to NB, but I don't think that this is a Harbaugh story. Just going to add this piece about Frost's ambivalence to his alma mater because I realized that it had influenced my thinking about him going back:

Florida has high expectations, and the resources to go with them.

Nebraska has nearly as high expectations, and nowhere near the resources necessary to go with them.

Don't be fooled, Nebraska is not going to settle for competing for the Big Ten West once in a while.  They expect conference championships and Playoff appearances . . . just like Florida.

They still talk about it all the time.

His ambition and drive is limitless.

I do think he will seriously consider all offers - Nebraska, Florida Tennessee and any others because his stock is high right now, and Frost also knows that other coaches are on the market with him - like Penn State OC Joe Moorhead and Mike Norvell at Memphis, Charlie Strong at USF, Neal Brown at Troy, John Grass at Jacksonville State, Steve Campbell at Central Arkansas, and KC Keeler at Sam Houston State (of Delaware fame).

There are a lot of open positions and a lot of quality candidates.

He can stay at UCF with the Black Knights on more or less cruise control with a strong, talented team next year with 9 returning starters on offense and 7 returning starters on defense, playing college football in one of the most invisible, mediocre conferences in the nation. Except coaches don't stay for facilities, players do.

Or he can go to "recruit-limited" Nebraska. I disagree with this assumption completely.  First, Nebraska had the most robust walk-on program in the nation fo decades, with some of the most productive players ever.  Frost personally witnessed the benefits of this program first hand when he played there.

Second, Nebraska always recruited extremely well in football talent-rich states like California, Texas, Colorado, Ohio, Illinois, Florida and New Jersey. That would likely boost under Frost who is a tenacious, competitive and fanatical recruiter.

However, what has failed Nebraska football for decades has been defense.

The Blackshirts have been MIA ever since Frank Solich was fired.

Nebraska should NEVER have fired Frank Solich, and they definitely should not have fired Pelini.

If Frost is hired, you can expect option and power football to return to Lincoln offensively, as well as the Blackshirts defense tradition.  The state will love him, unlike the interlopers Bill Callahan (deposed NFL coach) and PAC-10 has-been and "nice guy"/beta male "Mike Riley", who have no real links to the state. Frost is home grown and understand the traditions, rivalries and importance of winning at Nebraska.

I don't want to see Frost at Nebraska.

I'd much rather see the Huskers hire Nebraskan Bob Stitt (age 53) from Montana.  That would be more fascinating, but would be unlikely to re-animate the dreaded Blackshirts defense.

I wouldn't go as far as saying he should go to Nebraska. But surely staying at UCF for longer than another year or two isn't an option right? I mean, its not happening imo.

Because he would be an instant hero there, with rock star, red carpet treatment everywhere he went throughout the state. By comparison, he doesn't get that in Orlando due to general apathy about UCF football, nor would he get that in Gainsville, where the pressure to win would be enormous, and the knives would come out early if he wasn't turning it around within the first year or two. By comparison, Husker fans are freakin desparate.

I remember people in the media and fans of other teams all asking that. The answer then and the answer now is that people are motivated by many different things and anyone who claims to be able to 'know' what's best for another person is wrong.

I don't know or care where Frost will go for what it's worth, but it's pretty funny to see *our* fanbase play this game now given what happened with Jim.

Do not care about Frost.

Does anyone else love that turn over chain? And Miami. Watching them destroy ND was just great. They are all kinds of jacked up down there. I want to see them play Bama in the championship. Of course that is if Michigan doesn't run the table and a bunch of other weird happen to get us there.

Is he married? Have kids?
Where's his wife from? Where would she like to live?

Family considerations are a huge factor in what jobs these guys take when they have a choice of where to go.

That's what the NFL media didn't/don't get about Harbaugh- not only did he play at Michigan, he spent time growing up in Ann Arbor, and loves the idea of his kids experiencing the same; his parents loved it enough to move back.

Yeah, Harbaugh's draw to Michigan was as much growing up in Ann Arbor as it was his playing days for the Wolverines.

For Harbaugh, it was a true homecoming.

Frost does not have anywhere near that connection to Lincoln / Nebraska.
