What is Michigan's best win in last decade (08-17')?

Submitted by mgoblueben on
Pretty simple topic, but what is our best win in the last 10 seasons? I'd guess it's one of the UTL, sugar bowl, or penn state last year. But how good was Notre dame those years and VT was not the best BCS bowl team in recent memory. Penn State was at home and without their linebackers. But what say you?

I have a soft spot for the Captal One win over Florida. Beat Tebow and Urban Meyer. Sent Lloyd out right with a good old fashioned butt kicking. Don't think anyone gave us a chance. Certainly up there in my opinion and was at least a nice consolation for the disappointments of that season. Edit: technically took place in 08.

I absolutely love Michigan. We haven't been Alabama , but we've had some interesting games this past decade. Remember stomping Nebraska that year, but losing to Iowa. Fuckin Iowa. why? I can't wait for us to beat Penn State this weekend. ;)

with the sentiment but there just isn't much to pick from.  It was great at the time because the team looked so good against a quality opponent even if they had flaws.  We also ran the ball well against a stout defensive front and the coaching and preparation were phenomenal for that game.  It looked like a turning point into year 2 where things would be great.

I think the UTL1 game was the greatest ending.

My favorite win was over Florida in the Bowl Game, with their entire team unsuspended.  It was the most methodical ruthless destruction I've seen in a long time.

Had we knocked out OSU with the 2pt conv I think that would be tops.  Even with my advanced age I had internally committed to running downtown screaming and would have attempted to drink every beer in Ann Arbor in celebration.

I was at that Wisc game-comeback (I was living elsewhere for the rest of the season) and it was surreal watching a QB stand in the gun and clap their hands to take a snap...  It didn't even feel good.

Yeah, the wins over OSU, MSU and PSU were satisfying rivalry wins (and there have been WAY TOO FEW of those the last 10 years), but honestly, did we ever beat those guys as an underdog?  Or even when we were favored by less than 4 points?  Burning Penn State to the ground last year was a pleasant surprise, but when they ran the table all the way to the Rose Bowl (where we haven't been since it was a consolation prize for not going to the NC Game, and then shitting the bed against USC for good measure), it took the shine off it.

In contrast, we beat Notre Dame so often over the last ten years that any single win fails to stand out, especially now that we realize the wins were fools' gold from the RR and Hoke eras.

I won't dignify the suggestion that any victory over a team as hapless as Rutgers, no matter how well seasoned with their delusional expectations and subsequent schadenfreud, is worth considering.

For me, it's Harbaugh's defenestration of a well regarded ESS EEE CEE team in their backyard to close out a season.  The preceeding game, OSU gave us a little brother wake up call in a season that before that game had gone way better than expected.  I don't know about all of you, but a lot of people on this very board (including me) wondered if we could ever close the gap with Meyer's Ohio State.  Moreover, after all the years of failing the Brent Mussberger test (i.e. going 0-2 in the last two games of the year: OSU and the Bowl Game), it was a tonic.  Not just that we won, but that we embarassed the other team so comprehensively that they clearly wanted no part of us by the second half.

‘08 Capital One Bowl - sending Lloyd out on a high note, beating up on Tebow and a Florida team that absolutely no one gave Michigan a chance against.

‘12 Sugar Bowl -the game itself was a total derpfest and we played like shit, but the football gods decided to take pity or they just got too drunk and forgot to watch the game. 11 win season and a BCS bowl win.

‘16 Wisconsin - didn’t move the needle much nationally, but still a top-10 win against an 11win team

‘16 PSU - they were an awful team at the time, but that win looked really good at season’s end.

That’s about all I can think of. I don’t count wins against overrated ND teams or vastly discombobulated Fickell-coached OSU teams. But sadly this is about all I can think of. Not too many signature wins but a whole shitload of signature losses. Usually at least 1-2 every year for the last 15 years.

I would have voted for Lloyd's last game, but as I understood the question, it was out of bounds.  There are so many reasons that game stands out:

- Lloyd's last game (duh) in a season that started with The Horror.

- The only win against OSU or in a Bowl for that excellent class of seniors.

- Blasting an Urban Meyer coached team, and Tim Tebow (who BTW, I like as a person and as a player), during a season between their National Championships, in their backyard.

- Winning a game that would have been a rout for us if not for unlucky turnovers.

2011, I guess. That once storied rivalry is a mere shadow of its former self. Sad to say that it will take a number of UM victories to renew national interest. You folks still living in Michigan and Ohio have a bloated view of what is now only regarded by the rest of the country as a mere regional rivalry.

This thread is unexpectedly depressing.

Based on what the team turned out to be, perhaps PSU last year, though it didn't feel that way at the time. UTL 1 DID feel that way at the time, and the team was good that season, so... that's probably it.

By far the funnest game was 2010 ND when Denard ran like the wind.  Satisfying victory.  That 80-some odd yard bolt from scrimmage is probably my all time favorite play on offense.

A win this weekend will take the cake.

UTL 1 was the most entertaining. The Sugar Bowl was the best win in terms of stature. The Sparty and OSU wins were against their shittiest teams in that time so it’s hard to get too excited about those. Yuck

That's gonna be the most memorable win for me any day.

Last time I've seen a Michigan team genuinely look like something I'd want to watch (if I weren't a fan).

Also the last time we've had a coach that I actually like.

Also sending off probably the best group of seniors we've had in quite some time. Chad Henne, Mike Hart, these guys were absolute legends.

Wisconsin last year.  Wisco was #8 we were #4.  Both were undefeated.  Wisco already had two top ten (at the time) wins over LSU/MSU.  Marquee home game of the year.

My criteria is in terms of importance at the time.  In hindsight, Colorado/PSU were great wins, but they didn't have the marquee, big game feeling Wisco did last year.  We didn't know LSU/MSU weren't any good, yet.  The stakes for the season were high for us, which is what edges out UTL and 2009 Wisco.

I think beating osu is up there. Regardless of how shitty the team was. It's the most recent one we have and beating them regardless of what the circumstances were, is always a plus in my book. That's what we have until we beat them next.

the top three are all from the same 2011 season:

- Best comeback/reason to go nuts in the stands (and over a rival to boot): UTL1 vs ND

- Best rivalry win: the one over OSU goes without saying as it was the only one in that span

- Best hardware on the line: Sugar Bowl win vs VT.  If we expect to play for championships, sadly, this is the closest we've been in that time.  No division clinchers (that is insane), no conference titles, obviously, and this is the best bowl win.  It was a slog like the UTL1 game but an incredibly exciting finish and best post game party in Nawwwwlins.

I didn't make it to many games in the past ten years because I live on the West Coast, but I was at all three of those games, I was at the 2010 game at ND, which was also amazing, and probably our best road win in that span, and I was at the 2013 OSU game which was our "best" loss as others have mentioned.  Been lucky to be at some good games and will be at The Game this year.

Mostly just a bunch of soul crushing defeats. 10 years and many millions of dollars later and Michigan still can’t beat OSU.
