Semi-OT: Schools overly committed to a rivalry

Submitted by crg on
Watching the Purdue game on Saturday I noticed something that was unexpected (at least new to me). On kickoffs, the Purdue fan base yells "IU sucks" every time, which I find hilarious considering that they have not done well in that rivalry for a while (and IU wasn't there). That shows true commitment, to troll a rival at a completely unrelated event, and to do it often. Just curious if there were any similar examples around the CFB landscape (let's limit this to gameday traditions).

I believe the band doesn't play the song anymore due to complaints, and I haven't been to Spartan Stadium in a few years to confirm, but MSU used to play some song in the late 2000's where at one point the fans would chant/sing "Fuck Them Wolverines" multiple times throughout the song.

The lead up to a chant at MSU basketball and hockey games especially has "Fuck those Wolverines!" and then the band plays and the chant goes on to "Go Green" band plays, "Go White" band plays, and it finishes with "Let's Go State."

Heard it all the time at the Breslin and Munn, regardless of opponent. It's pathetic.

I saw this dude in Madison eagerly parading this sign around. They had just beaten Iowa, and would not play Michigan for another seven weeks.

Illinois, Northwestern, and lord knows how many others think that Michigan is a big rival of theirs.

I used to know people in Indiana who were Purdue football and Indiana basketball fans. Heck they got two 'shared' universities with IUPUFW and IUPUI. Maybe the few committed fans they have are obsessed because it's all they've got..

Even though WVU and Pitt don't play anymore (and they should), WVU fans still chant "Eat shit Pitt" any chance they get - most infuriatingly during the chorus of Sweet Caroline. Pitt fans never seemed to take the rivalry as seriously. But this will come out of WVU fans at any event: games not involving Pitt, tailgates, parties, weddings, etc.
