OT: Hurricane Irma Open Thread

Submitted by UMFanInFlorida on

Good morning from Central Florida. We're just starting to see the outer bands come into Orlando with some rain starting to spit down. South Florida and the Keys have already been feeling it for some time, with the eye wall right on the Keys right now.

Our family is hunkered down with the house prepared. Most of our neighbors have opted to stay as well.. we're ready to ride this one out.

Your thoughts are prayers for all of us in Florida are greatly appreciated! Other FL MGoBloggers, let us know how you're faring as well.

ed: For those tracking the storm, I highly highly recommend this site: http://spaghettimodels.com . Mike has provided lots of information, live updates and his own interpretation of all the data that's out there.

My father lived in Naples until a few months ago, when we had to move him to an assisted living facility on the east coast. We're trying to sell his apartment now, and my brother just told me he never bought insurance for it.

I hope your parents are ok and don't sustain too much damage.

Thanks.

Their power and phone has been out since 2:00 PM.  I still have not heard anything from her at 10:00 PM.

The Weather Channel broadcast live from Tamiami Trail highway in Naples, about a mile from her house, as the hurricane eyewall came through. So I got to keep up with the hurricane status live.

There did not appear to be too much structural damage to buildings, so that's good news.

If anyone is in Naples and is in a safe place and can post, please give periodic updates on what you are experiencing.

Nothing like hearing it directly from someone who is actually there.

Thanks.

I'm working at the hospital, while my wife, kids, and mother-in-law are shuttered up in the house. It's been pretty tame so far here in Okeechobee, though we have had a couple of pretty significant bands come through. I hope everyone was prepared and stays safe.

Was hoping to stay home, but the landlord didn't board the windows and we didn't think they would hold up. Weathering it out at a friend's brewery instead. Not a bad place to be.

It looks like the winds are starting to intensify here in Okeechobee. Seems like the whole southern half of the state is under a tornado warning at this point.

Tallahassee here. Not looking forward to the heavy winds we're expecting tomorrow morning. Hermine did a good bit of damage last year and with a city full of tall pine/oak trees, we're sure to have a lot of downed trees and loss of electricity for days/weeks.

I think we are nearing the peak of what we’ll get in Orlando. Strong gusty winds, near 90 or 100 I’d say. We still have power and only one neighbor has reported some minor screen damage. Prayers and thoughts definitely go out to those in the Naples area and others in South Florida who got hit pretty hard.

I evacuated from Bonita Springs (immediately north of Naples) a few days ago. Many of my neighbors did not. All power and cell phone towers are out. No word on how they are doing.

The power company says that area may take several weeks to restore power.

We have had some 90 mph gusts that sound like a jet engine outside the hospital. According to my wife, who is at home with the kids, it has been very scary for the last few hours. We won't know how much damage until morning, but we already know that trees and power lines as down. As soon as they lift the curfew at 0900, I'm headed home. I have to find a way to not be separated from my wife and kids next time. It's just too much. I hope everyone on the gulf side is OK.
