Kevin Koger playing DE?
I read an odd bit of news in an Inside the Fort report today...
Kevin Koger is reportedly getting some snaps at DE. I'm not sure if this is a reaction to the Heininger injury. It's not a full-blown position change, but it's interesting nonetheless.

He is also in line to play some Mork in the Mork and Mindy movie... He is also a bad ass TE.
Dated cultural reference.
I'm from the 80's. Sorry i'm not lil wayne enough for you...
haha... I've never been negged over a silly comment before. I guess I'll only use the good material geez...
"Mork calling Orson, come in Orson". Believe you me, there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with not being lil wayne enough.
Nanno Nanno!
amphibious, I was going to neg you but then decided your avatar warranted a free pass, but then thought about it some more and negged you anyway because that was awful.
It's probably just because they are so short on DE's for the OL to practice against. You can't really simulate a 6'4" DE using a 5'11" CB.
I assume he is still the starting TE. I don't think Webb is that good. But Koger had some bad games last year too. Koger needs to step up this year as a TE.
I'm thinking the starter will probably be Bennie Joppru or Jerame Tuman.
Wait, what year is it?
Don't forget about Tyler Ecker.....
He was possibly the most talented of the bunch.
Tuman was a staple in the Michigan offense during the 1997 season. I think he's hands-down the best of the bunch.
Plus, there's the whole Alamo Bowl thing with Ecker...
Oh God, I still have nightmares about that game. PITCH THE BALL TO BREASTON!!!
Okay, sorry, got it out of my system now.
That's what you do if you're PAYING ATTENTION.
I think he was just out for an evening jog.
Thanks for making me re-live that. I don't know if I had bigger nightmares of Breaston right at Ecker's left hip, or the Sun Belt conference refs. I'll never forget Herbstreit, "This may be one of the worst reffed games I've ever seen."
It was like every time somebody made an electrifying play, the refs said, "Well, I've never seen a guy capable of doing that before, so it must not have happened."
Yeah, that's because other conferences have ACTUAL ATHLETES.
I just remember Mike Hart making about 4 guys miss before Ecker even had the chance to fuck it up.
Tuman ended up being the best, but he was also fortunate enough to play at a time when we used a lot of TE in the passing game. The reason Ecker didn't stand out more is because we had great WR's for his entire tenure.
Jerame Tuman was an All-American. He was a great player, period. Ecker had potential but never fully lived up to it.
in '05 with no timeouts and ~15 seconds to go at the 50.
so I nominate Jay Riemersma.
At a distant 2nd for this category, we have Andy Mignery.
And Kevin Koger will be fine.
But if he continues to play TE, then he needs to catch the ball consistently...He can make the difficult catch, but he had too many drive killers.
He also had a lot of drive savers. There were many times I remember jumping up yelling "KOGER! FUCK YEAH!".
All the TEs took some snaps during pass pro drills, but after trying them out, they decided to only have Webb keep on playing a little DE, and that is only in pass rush situations.
Koger the ball!
the ball Koger !!
He played a lot of DE in high school and when he first came to U of M there was talk of him moving over to the defensive side of the ball.
He did'nt play DE he played linebacker
Fast forward to about 50 seconds or so. See Koger playing as a down lineman with his hand on the ground? That's not a linebacker.
The embedder can fast forward the video by including &start=50 to the end of both url instances in the embedding code.
makes them look like midgets. It's actually rather comical.
Thats not Kroger Rookie
Did you wake up drunk, too?
Nope, just stupid as always.
It's Koger, not Kroger.
That whole jersey switcheroo thing on April Fool's must have really irked the offensive coaches.
Spring practice is the time to try these kind of position switches as there is really nothing to lose. It's his 3rd season as a TE in RR's offense so he doesn't need to spend all his time taking reps at TE (even though he still is practicing there).
Who knows, maybe he ends up being a natural at DE. It looks like he has the size and speed necessary to do so.
According to Roundtree, Koger is the best dancer on the team. It's from the latest UM article from Rittenberg.
dance on ice?
Remember the last TE that was converted to DE?
That's right, Carson "I'll Beat The Shit Out Of Your Skinny White Nerd Ass...WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU'RE GOING GET BACK HERE YAARRRGHGHGG" Butler.
Mr. Koger, you do not want to go down this road.
he's not still there on St. Patty's day, we should be fine.
He's Carson Butler? Whatever happened to Brandon Moore?
He's been lighting it up in spring practices. He probably has the best shot at being the starting TE if Koger moves over to the defensive side of the ball.
I'm not saying you're wrong, but I haven't heard any buzz about Moore this spring at all. If I had to bet money on the second-string TE, I'd bet it on Martell Webb.
However, Koger is likely going to still be the starting TE.
I'm all for getting athletes on the field. Koger definitely has a ton of athletic ability, but it would be nice to see our TE's practicing on catching the ball. I think they were a valuable weapon early in the season and it seemed like once Tate lost confidence they were very rarely used. It'd be nice to see Koger get more involved with the O.
I think Koger and the TE group will see more looks if Denard gets more PT like is suggested. A TE drag or some other short route would be a great dump off for Denard, just enough to keep the D honest. Koger's a big target, and should be either QB's best friend if they aren't making the big throws.
love that little boot leg with the TE drag. Even Griese was able to scramble for quite a few yards, if Denard can get some looks like that he can pick up a big chunk of yards in a hurry.
I think you'll find that young quarterbacks utilize the middle of the field less than more experienced quarterbacks. Tight ends typically operate in the middle of the field.
With a quarterback who's not very adept at reading defenses, throwing over the middle could be disastrous. Denard will probably be looking for slots and wideouts. Koger et al. will be more dangerous when Forcier is in the game, IMO.
I wish we'd incorporate him into the offense in more than a strictly blocking role.
