MBB Coaching Candidates

Submitted by rainingmaize on

While I'm willing to go on the record and say that at least at one point, Beilein was a very very good coach, I'm now willing to move on. I also don't think Beilein is going to be fired at the end of the season. That being said, he is trending towards the hot seat and hopefully this thread can serve as an outlet for people who want Beilein gone to suggest an alternative.

Here are some candidate ideas::

Greg Marshall, Wichita State:
Tremendous record, 444-172 overall in his career, took Wichita to the Final Four. I'm going to guess he's a long shot, but he did show interest in Texas a few years ago, so might be willing to explore Michigan.

Larry Krystkowiak, Utah:
Took over a complete trainwreck in Utah, and has built them into a solid team. No geographic connections however.

Randy Bennett, Saint Mary's:
Surprised no one has hired him yet. Always has that program playing well, and if you like Australians, than he's a home run hire. Not the greatest geographical fit.

Chris Mack, Xavier:
Has had some success at Xavier while also has recruiting connections. Hasn't really been able to take that program to the next step however.

Kevin Ollie, UConn:
Hired by our current AD, won a NC. However has been a bit hit or miss with his own players.

Fred Hoiberg, Chicago Bulls:
On the NBA hot seat now, so might be available. Has familiarity with Big 10 country, did really well with Iowa State which included recruiting a former Mr. Michigan Basketball player. However his time with the Bulls hasn't been impressive and built Iowa State through transfers.

Ben Jacobson, Northern Iowa:
His team always seems like they are an NCAA tourney pest, and I imagine it isn't easy to recruit players to Northern Iowa. Still kinda young.

Kermit Davis, Middle Tennessee State
While his last two years have been good, he's been at MTSU forever and didn't start to have success untill now. Older guy at age 57. But on the other hand, f*** Michigan State.

*EDIT* Archie Miller, Dayton:
I don't know how I forgot about him. Has killed it at Dayton, and is young.

Yes, you're right he is an elite coach but only when his roster is loaded with NBA level talent. His best teams had all the guys Beilein has ever put in the league at Michigan. Let's face it, other than 2011-2014 our basketball teams ahve been trash. He lucked out on a few diamonds in the rough and has whiffed on everything else since.

The front line is marshmallow soft.

In terms of returning talent, X is a munchkin who doesn't want to shoot and DJ has slow feet, can't guard anybody, and is content to float on the outside and chuck 3's.

Mo has potential but needs 20 lbs of muscle.

Hate to say it but Beilein has just failed on the recruiting trail too many times -- it's apparent the best players don't like his style of ball.

I guess I'm ok with holding on to Beilein for one more year if it means we can have a homerun. Let Chris Collins prove himself or Billy Donovan get fired. Go back to the Glick/Ross money well.

I remember when everyone thought Shaka Smart would be a homerun hire. Hiring an A+ coach is extremely tough

It's much harder to find a quality level basketball coach than a football coach. I knew Shaka was overhyped but I didn't think he would flop this bad. I still think that we should hold onto Beilein till the end of the season and see what's out there, but the seat is now heating up for John.

Maybe we should look at Harvard's coach.  His teams have won their league's title five out of the last six years and have made it to the Big Dance four times in that time span.  Plus he has a Duke pedigree.  /s

This list is why it will be a bad idea to let JB go. How likely are any of these guys to do better than what we are doing right now? I certainly don't see any slam dunk hires on this list. Intriguing prospects sure, but if that coach doesn't work out then what. Unless a Donovan type coach could be had, I don't see anyone on this list as a sure fire, challenge for the Big 10 title every year type coach.

Gonzaga: Mark Few is not leaving, nor should he Oregon: Home run hire, but you would have to outbid Nike. Baylor: Drew does have some Midwest ties, and Baylor athletic department might get nuked. Not a wow candidate, but I guess it's worth a shot. . Northwestern: Like many people hear have said, might need to see another year out if Collins. South Carolina: I thought about putting Frank Martin on this list, but I wasn't sure if Mgobloggers would like his in your face screaming. Creighton: Interesting guy, but hasn't really done a ton since his son left

With this Collins crap. Collins was one of the whiniest Dookies of all time, he was a precursor to the wojos and redicks and Allens to follow. Next you guys will be calling for Hurley to coach here. Is nothing sacred?

I would rather an assistant from a great program than a HC from a mid major. We need to recruit at a high level and stop recruiting mid major talent to compete in the big ten. Michigan is not just gonna attract the best just cause it's Michigan. If that was the case, Beilein wouldn't have a problem recruiting.

Wanted him before we eventually hired Beilein after seeing his work at Winthrop.  Wins with defense,  roots in the southeast, now has a recruiting hold in the midwest.

Look at Winthrop and WSU's records with and without him.  He'd be a great pick if he'd leave.
