OT: A Humble Request on Behalf of a Little Michigan Fan

Submitted by rob f on

My oldest daughter "Mo" asked me to share this with as many friends as possible:

https://www.gofundme.com/8f-udos-surgery-fund?ssid=841824986&pos=1

Her lovable little pooch "Udo", a Mini Dachshund, suffered a serious fall earlier this week and is essentially crippled unless he has spinal surgery. With surgery, his vet says he has a 95% chance of full recovery; w/o the surgery, Mo is facing the agonizing choice of settling for either "medical management" for her little man, with a small chance of full recovery, or else euthanasia, for this little big Michigan Fan.

Please help if any of you can, Mo and her hubby just got married 2 months ago and are unable to finance the surgery alone, and dad (rob f) is pretty tapped out after paying for my little girl's wedding in October (though I have promised as much financial help as it takes to get Udo his surgery. After all, I consider the little man to be my dog, too---he lived here for 7 years, until moving out with my daughter).

Any donation, regardless of amount, would be so greatly appreciated! (BTW, I did clear my post with a mod before making this request.)

Thanks in advance, MGoFriends!

Rob f, question for you: has your daughter looked at getting some part time work to help cover the expenses as well? Basically every store is hiring short term/part time help around the holidays. The pay is good, the work isn't hard and the hours are usually very flexible. I know personally I'd be much more willing to help if I knew that the owners were exploiting every opportunity and making personal sacrifices before asking strangers for donations.

but I have to be brief. She has a management job and doing 45+ hours/week and his sales job often means long days at the office. So no, they aren't in position to take on temp or second jobs. Feel free, though, to email me [email protected] if you need more. My daughter just called me about a couple emails she received a short while ago, one from GoFundMe advising her not to give out personal information and that they were forwarding an email to her, and the other possibly from you with nearly identical questions. She wasn't sure what to do and decided to get dad's advice.

She then did screenshots of both. The one from GoFundMe looks to be the standard warning to not give out passwords, account info, etc., and that GoFundMe never asks for certain types of information. Also gave her a link to report suspicious messages. Your message didn't trigger that sort of response from her, she was just kinda taken by surprise. I'm going to forward her a link to this thread so that she can read it after work tonight. BTW, she's also a Michigan fan, been going to a game or two each year with dad ever since she was 2 years old, and her husband is also a big Michigan fan. Just like their son Udo. :-)

I hope the dog recovers but the utilitarian in me hopes that threads like these are kept to a minimum.
I don't care when people get accepted into Michigan, I don't care when people have babies, and if every person made a thread every time either of those things happened then this blog would be something else.
If everybody on here made a thread every time they or someone they knew needed help, then we would have to dig deep to find threads about Michigan or football or sports, the things that attracted us here to begin with.

Hopefully Udho will have a speedy recovery. We had a Westie that blew out both rear legs in the span of a year. Doggie knee surgery wasn't cheap, but Lilly was a beloved member of the family. Surgery was the only option.

and think it sets a precedent for everyone to use MGoBlog for gofundme pages. I can think of many better reasons for gofundme postings including donating money to help Larry Prout Jr and give him the best holidays possible. How many more of these are coming and who chooses which are worthwhile and which aren't? While I usually agree with LSA, I wish him luck going forward. My son needs ear surgery after the beginning of the year and I can't really afford it. I'll make payments as necessary but I would be pretty pissed if MGoBlog didn't allow me to do a gofundme post to raise the money after this. Be prepared for this for this to become the go to place to get these pages started.

I don't mean this as an attack on rob f, but we are anonymous posters on the internet. You don't know if rob f has a daughter or a dog or decided he wants to go on a vacation or needs casino money. There's no checks on this. No one here knows me or rob f. Maybe wolverine devotee knows him but most likely he can't verify the daughter, the dog or the injury. I'm certain no one on here knows the financial situation of rob f or the daughter. Don't act like there is some verification process based on mgopoints or by posting a lot. Even in real life people always say they never suspected the person who embezzled all the money. If he can get the money more power to rob f. This should be on Facebook and not MGoBlog. Good luck to the mods as they get to choose good causes versus bad causes. I'm not sure where it's going to end but I see it ending badly as they choose who are good board members.

You raised some valid concerns. I know all I can offer you are my personal assurances that everything I've posted is on the up-and-up, but this probably won't be enough to satisfy you or anyone else questioning what's going on with Udo. To directly answer your post (and a few others), no, I don't do casinos. I'm not going anywhere on vacation, no matter how badly I wish I was heading to the Orange Bowl. I do have 2 daughters and a granddaughter, and my older daughter (and her newlywed hubby) does have a dog---not one she just got without knowing the potential expenses of pet ownership but one she's had for about 8 years, one she adopted when he was only about a year old, one that is healthy OTHER THAN his recently-injured spine. Why should Udo be put down when his breed's life expectancy indicates he'll likely be around for another half-dozen years or so? We're not talking about a sickly, uncared-for critter on death's doorstep, but about a very much loved part of the family. The only selfish parts of my motive are directly connected to my love for my kids, my granddaughter, and Udo. As I posted yesterday, he and my granddaughter grew up together, as she was born to my other daughter just a couple months after my older daughter adopted Udo. And they all lived here in my home for several years together. Yeah, selfish of me to feel this way, but my 8-yr-old granddaughter adores that pooch, and nobody in my family looks at a loved family pet as being a disposable piece of property. I wish I could have gone another route on this, but I didn't post in the spur of the moment. I tweeted the GoFundMe to a moderator late afternoon Friday to get approval, then sat on it until late morning Saturday before posting, out of concern for the board's reaction AND while exploring other options. And like I be mentioned upthread more than once, I don't do Facebook. This board is my social media. No, very few people on this board know me personally. I've only met 2 through MGoBlog (StephenRJKing and XtraMelanin), and personally know a few others from my days as a moderator on a forum that ran for several years on the WorldCrossing platform, then migrated (when WX shut down) to become a U of M sub-forum at www.detroitlionsforum.com . As this is already much longer than I originally intended, I'll close with this: Nobody's arm is being twisted. I'm not downvoting anyone who has spoken against my OP or me. I respectfully disagree with the doubters, but understand their doubts. I didn't take this lightly and I didn't intend to cause a shitstorm. But I also am not apologizing for my motives in helping my daughter and her wonderful dog. Most of all, though, a great big huge T H A N K - Y O U to all who have spoken in support and/ or donated!!! Your support and kind words are appreciated more than you know and the donated $$ will NOT be used for anything other than Udo and his surgery & recovery. -rob f

I feel the love you have for the dog and your family. I understand why you posted it here. My issue is more with the moderation that is going to have to decide who is worthy or not worthy. MGrowOld, who frequently makes fun of posters for starting bad threads decided this cause is good as did LSA. That's great but what about the next ten to come or twenty. Is MGrowOld going to approve of those? Who sets the rules for this? I somehow don't see people being so kind as more and more of these threads hit the blog. Maybe the answer is a sidebar for gofundme projects.

I hope Udo has the surgery and comes back as good as new. I love dogs. I hope you and your family have a great Christmas.

I have always had a lot of respect for you and that will continue. My only point is this isn't the place for these types of threads. It's ripe for abuse and there is no fair way for deciding what stays and what gets deleted.

For some reason this reminds me of the Christmas Vacation scene where cousin Eddie was admitting to Clark he lost his house, couldnt afford to buy gas & is living in an RV while filling the shopping cart with 50 lb bags of dog food.

What never ceases to amaze me is the capacity for humans to tell other humans how they should spend their money.  The number of posters in this thread admonishing Rob for posting this and then chasting the support he's getting is hillarious.

I dont own a dog (we have cats - lucky me) and I dont "know" Rob other than I'm pretty sure he's about my age, has always been a quality poster and others here who I like HAVE met him and say he's a pretty good guy.  Which doesnt surprise me given his posts through the years.

So if Rob posts a GoFundMe  request for help I'm going to try and help.  Just as I have with my children, my sister in law and people I know at work.  It's my money, I earned it, and how and where I choose to spend it or give it away is still up to me.

MGrowOld. I appreciate your kind words. I just posted a lengthy answer to several points posters have made, as a response to BlueCube and others. I'm not offended by the naysayers; my post of a few minutes ago is now on the thread and the doubters can take it for what it's worth.

I love animals (have 3 dogs myself), so I'm certainly sympathetic to your plight. However, before I was at a stable place financially, I encountered a few procedures where it was above what I could handle. Thankfully, nearly all animal hospitals have care credit. Even if you have terrible credit they will work with you. Between that and recently getting married (where I'm sure they received some money), seems you could handle that. As other posters have said, I can't stand people that have animals but cannot do whatever is necessary to get them right. I hope you get this animal the care it deserves.
