I'm stunned that so many people feel Peppers was our defensive MVP, let alone the overall MVP. I'm not calling anyone wrong. Could people share why they chose him over what I feel were the actual defensive keys (Jordan Lewis and the defensive line - especially Charlton). Again, just a discussion. I'm willing to be wrong. I am just slack-jawed in amazement so I'd love to hear some reasoning.

I considered him the team MVP because of his significant contributions to all three squads.  It seems to me that he and Jourdan Lewis are in the conversation for defensive MVP, with honorable mention to all the D-linemen.  I also think that he and Kenny Allen are in the conversation for special teams MVP.  Finally, when he entered the game on offense, the defense's focus shifted to account for him.  That doesn't put him in the offensive MVP conversation, but it is a non-trivial contribution.  Also, many of us feel we could have made a big play by running a constraint play that exploits the defensive adjustments to the Pep-Cat.  The best offensive play with him on the field against OSU was his last play where he was a decoy.

Put all those together, and that's why he's my team MVP without being the MVP for any of the squads.  Also in the keep it simple... category, being a Heisman Finalist is pretty significant.

Team MVP: give it to the whole defense. They showed up and DELIVERED every single week.

Offensive MVP: tough to say since the offense as a whole was so inconsistent, but probably Darboh.

Defensive MVP: Lewis. Who else? The DL as a whole was phenomenal, but they are elite as a unit. Lewis is elite by himself. He shuts down one half of the field. By the end of the season, teams just stopped throwing his way. It was such a fruitless endeavor.

Special Teams MVP: Peppers, but he still fairly underwhelmed in this department relative to what I thought he would do. 1 punt return for a TD all year......

Best Offensive Player: Speight when he's on his game. Overall, though, probably Butt.

Best Defensive Player: Lewis

Most Improved Player: Probably McCray. He was a non-factor these last few years, and now we have a pretty solid guy coming back to man the LB corps next Fall.

Freshman of the Year: Chris Evans. He brings the speed to the RB position we've lacked since.....I don't know. Maybe forever.

Coordinator / Position Coach of the Year: Don Brown my man. Not even close. If we go down to the position coach level, then its Mattison, and that's not even close, either.

Most Underrated Player: Stribling, probably. Lewis got all the notice and all the attention, but Stribling more than held his own on the other half of the field. He's probably getting drafted this Spring.

Favorite Offensive Player of 2016: Darboh, I suppose. But again, offense as a whole was just too inconsistent.

Favorite Defensive Player of 2016: the whole defensive line. They made everyone they played look BAD. From Hawaii on to OSU.

Play/Highlight of the Year: Lewis INT against Wisconsin. That's the pick of the year, and I don't care what anyone else says.

Game of the Year: Pummeling PSU, our "undisputed" Big Ten Champions, into a bloody pulp of nothingness. There is absolutely nothing anyone can say that would convince me we wouldn't still beat them badly if we played that game again today. We outclassed them in every possible way. Out-coached, out-muscled, out-hearted. Out-everything'd.

Favorite Moment of the Year: re-taking our state. MSU was bad this year, but you knew they'd show up and play their best game. There's still a lot of work to be done with this program, but re-taking the state of Michigan was a crucially important next step. There is no more questioning which program is the best in the state.

1. Team MVP:

Peppers - glue for a historically dominant defense

2. Offensive MVP:

Speight - #H3ISMAN2017

3. Defensive MVP:

Taco - truly unstoppable late... unless held

4. Special Teams MVP:

Allen - showed his nerves who was boss during the bye week, absorbed voodoo punting skills from Iowa's Golden God

5. Best Offensive Player:

Speight - #H3ISMAN2017

6. Best Defensive Player:

Air Jourdan - best in the country at his position, absolute lockdown year

7. Most Improved Player:

Speight is the obvious choice, but to share the love, McCray - went from assumed liability to stud; notably improved edge protection as the year progressed

8. Freshman of the Year:

Evans - mold of TJ Yeldon, but will be better than him as a sophmore

9. Coordinator/Position Coach of the Year:

Don Brown - can't argue with the defensive stats; super impressive for his first year at the program

10. Most Underrated Player of 2016:

Allen - so rare to have a good college kicker or punter, to have plusses at both positions come from one man is insane

11. Favorite Offesnive Player of 2016:

McDoooooooooooooooom - 'nuff said

12. Favorite Defensive Player of 2016:

Mo Burst Mo Hurst - #BellyRub

13. Play/Highlight of the Year:

The Mona Lisa of Punt Returns

14. Game of the Year:

Colorado - started by making me think this would be just another Michigan season and that Harbaugh wouldn't live up to the hype... ended with a blowout of a top-10 team

15. Favorite Moment of the Year:

Statement Bowl Game Win vs. FSU

1. Team MVP - Peppers

2. Offensive MVP - Darboh, picked up Chesson's slack, and was our go to guy in big situations.

3. Defensive MVP - Peppers, his versatility allowed UM to do all kinds of wonderful things.

4. Special Teams MVP - Kenny Allen -- UM was one of the best if not the best in Average starting field position and Allen was a big reason why (Peppers is the other, but didn't do much the last 3 weeks). Allen also didn't miss a FG after the Wisconsin debacle

5. Best Offensive Player - Butt.

6. Best Defensive Player - Lewis. Peppers was more important, but you simply couldn't throw on Lewis

7. Most Improved - Offense-Mangnuson, he was probably our best lineman week in week out. Defense - Gedeon hard to believe he didn't get more playing time in previous years.

8. Freshman - Evans. Added explosive plays to our offense which we needed. Gary was great but seemed to hit the freshman wall.

9. Coordinator/Position Coach of the Year: Brown

10. Most Underrated: Magnuson -- we're going to miss him next year.

11. Favorite Offensive Player -- Butt

12. Favorite Defensive Player -- Charlton -- he was a beast by the end of the year.

13. Play/Highlight of the Year -- Train formation

14. Game of the Year -- Michigan vs OSU. Despite the outcome, these were clearly 2 of the top 4 teams in the country.

15. Favorite Moment -- Peppers returning the 2-pt conversion against MSU because Dantonio is a prick. I would have laughed so hard if MSU recovered the on-side kick.

  1. Team MVP: Jabrill Peppers - His all-around contributions outstrip his teammates, though, as you'll see below, I don't think he was that far ahead.
  1. Offensive MVP: Wilton Speight - Everyone else's touches were too evenly distributed.  Darboh and Butt are #2 and #3.

  2. Defensive MVP: Jourdan Lewis - No, I'm not doing this just to be different.  I believe Lewis had a bigger defensive impact than Jabrill.

  3. Special Teams MVP: Jabrill Peppers - One of the best returners in the country.  It's worth noting that had Kenny Allen not had a slow start he'd be in contention here.

  4. Best Offensive Player: Jake Butt - While he only pulled in 43 catches and 4 TDs, I believe he was the best player on offense.  Love this question, by the way.

  5. Best Defensive Player: Jabrill Peppers - More talented than anyone else on the defense and will be drafted in the top half of round one.  Lewis is close.

  6. Most Improved Player: Wilton Speight/Chase Winovich - Hard to give this to anyone but Speight, but, even as a back-up DE, I feel Winovich earned a mention.  Also worth mentioning Kalis here, and even Gedeon and Stribling...so many big jumps.  That's great coaching.

  7. Freshman of the Year: Chris Evans - Duh.  Though this stellar class has several other surprise contributors: Asiasi, Bredeson, McDoom, Crawford, to name a few.  And one that was NOT a surprise: Gary.

  8. Coordinator/Position Coach of the Year: Don Brown - All other answers are wrong.

  9. Most Underrated Player of 2016: Matt Godin - This staff knows what they're doing, and there's a reason Godin started ahead of talents like Mone and Hurst--he's really good.  Ryan Glasgow is also still underrated.
  10. Favorite Offensive Player of 2016: Amara Darboh/Khalid Hill

  11. Favorite Defensive Player of 2016: Jabrill Peppers

  12. Play/Highlight of the Year: Peppers' called-back punt return TD vs. Rutgers.

  13. Game of the Year: Rutgers - Had so much fun watching this game.

  14. Favorite Moment of the Year: Beating MSU - Bye, Felicia.  The state is ours again, and it's only going to get worse for MSU.
