The only reasonable conclusion is that the Big 10 is corrupt

Submitted by Rdog on

The call disparity is just too large and it has happened enough times.  There is lots of evidence that recruits are paid to choose some universities, should we be surprised that referees are also paid off?

What is concerning is that the Big 10 seems complicit in these occurrences.   As bad as our calls were yesterday, the 2014 Penn State game had an even worse call-   OSU was credited with an interception that clearly bounced before OSU caught the ball.  This one call gave OSU that game.   Penn State complained but the Big 10 did nothing.

So now, what do we do?  Unless somehow things change The team we love is going to be repeatedly hosed on calls in most Big 10 games.   I don't think it is likely possible to trace the money being paid to the officials.  However, I think a statistical analysis will show that there is a consistent anamoly in OSU's favor.    Just this game shows it -  OSU had 6! yards of penalties versus an average for OSU of 52 yards of penalties a game.  I'm guessing that the refs didn't want the disparity to be so large but Michigan outplayed OSU by enough that the refs were forced to be even more one sided than usual.  My hope is that the disparity is so obvious that changes will have to be made.

I also hope that Harbaugh is angry enough to force the Big 10 to fix this.  The Big 10 leadership seems to be involved as this has been happening at least as long as Meyer has been at OSU without the Big 10 addressing it.   You don't give Michigan 2 away games at Michigan State in a row without an intent to hurt Michigan.   Similarly, the initial divisions within the Big 10 put Michigan at a disadvantage-  this was changed only because the Big 10 wanted to add two bad teams (Maryland and Rutgers) to make more money.

I'm not sure I want to watch football if I know my team is going to be at a disadvantage in every critical game.  I don't buy lottery tickets or gamble in Vegas because I know that the odds are not in my favor-  I'm saddened to realize that Michigan is also playing against the house in trying to win the Big 10.

The refs made Speight throw a pick six, fumble the ball, and toss another INT that set up an easy score for OSU.  Speight must be from Ohio.

Nice. Blame the 20 year old when there are incompetent adults on the field. Way to go. How about blaming JT and OSU kicker. Let us all blame the kids. Speight came from an injury and played his heart out for our entertainment. You do not know how much pain he had. So stop blaming the players. They made enough plays.

I think the 'but the players made mistakes' line is a little disingenuous.  Yes - Michigan made tons of mistakes and should've won the game.  Ohio STate made mistakes too.  But the officiating was a significant factor in the outcome of the game and that shouldn't be denied or ignored.  It's both.

Conspiracy though?  I don't think so. I just think there is a crisis of poor officiating in football - at the pro and college levels.  How many times do you watch a game and the refs make a bad call, review it and STILL get it wrong?  That makes me crazy.  It happens too much - it slows the game down and makes it frustrating to watch.

still can't win the big game. What has he done his entire career. he had Luck and no NC. He went to the SB and loss. Perhaps there is something to it.

Interesting that Schefter started off NFL Insiders: Sunday Edition with calling out the officiating in our game yesterday this morning. I know he's an alum, but it's nice to finally have one of our own using the ESPN platform like OSU does with Galloway and Smith.

Reasons for loss: 1. 3 heinous TO's. 21 pts 2. OL is below average 3. No 1 back needs to have more talent and vision 4. Officiating 5. Drops. 6. Lack of explosive difference makers on offense. Pep is not one. 7. LB'S are not elite

After reading posts like these, you'd think we got absolutely clobbered!

Michigan did not play a mistake-free game. No one is saying that. They did, however, play well enough to win the game had the officiating been even half-way fair. Speight made as clutch of a throw as one can to extend the game, and the defense came up huge with a fourth down stop. If the ball had been placed in the correct spot, the game ends and Michigan wins. It just so happens that there was a disconnect between the reality on the field and the one in the minds of the officiating crew.

Wishful thinking triumphed over reality itself yesterday afternoon and there's no way that should be acceptable.

Perspective or opinion. That's your opinion on the reasons. However, you could re-order or completely change all of those and have another viable opinion. The issue with the officiating is if it was inherently biased for a reason. Maybe, maybe not, but there is enough smoke that there might be fire.

Harbaugh needs to grow up and remember the officiating gifts that have been handed to his team this season (and last). Two roughing the snapper calls on M punts. Each enabled his team to take 4th quarter leads. One held up. In watching college football for decades I have seen that call made twice. TWICE! He has one road win vs a team with a winning record in his 25 games as the Head Coach at Michigan? 7-6 PSU in 2015.

At first I was telling people that we lost because of our offenses incompetence. I'm not one to complain about officiating. We lost the Iowa game, plain and simple. This, on the other hand, is some bullshit. Who cares if they were scared to make the call and the osu fans would throw stuff onto the field? It would have been the right call to make. This was a set up from the beginning because whoever is in charge of officiating put an ALL OHIO crew (one of which lives in Columbus) in charge of this game. Let them have their tainted "win" and get slaughtered by Alabama.
