Win out and in

Submitted by Catchafire on
The stars did not align for us last night and we losses. A million things could have happened differently and we win. Here is the thing: Beat Indiana!

You have to wonder if Harbaugh put too many of his tricks on film too early.  Everybody is well prepared now for the Pepcat and the Train and McDoom and so on.  They've seen them for weeks.

Maybe Harbaugh has something new up his sleeve for Ohio State, but if he does he didn't use it to bail himself out of Iowa.

My notes:

1) Stop they cute plays, they work less and less as season goes on. This includes Peppers wildcat. They rush all 11 players when he comes in and shut it down.

2) Not sure why Harbaugh, Mr. Tight End, didn't use his tight ends or his fullbacks much for that matter. Why all the deep balls? Did he lose his playbook?

3) Hurts from Alabama is going to win Heisman, nobody on these 1 loss or 2 loss teams is going to win, so stop all the Heisman talk.

4) We, along with the other top 4 that lost still can all be in CFP if we win out. If we lose one more game it will be no CFP and no Rose Bowl - hello Tampa.

5) OSU is flawed too, but they have recovered from their loss and are peaking - we need to do this too.

I don't understand why people are upset by the deep balls. They went after a freshman corner with two senior WR leaders of the team. They almost hit several of them. They were certainly wide open. Iowa CBs played out of their mind, Chesson had a really poor day, game of inches went against us (think how Darboh getting a toe down changes the game, or if Chesson's drop doesn't float right into the CB's hands) and Speight missed several oportunities. It's disappointing, but the scheme is sound - you have to take advantage of what you think is a mismatch.

Really ever since the msu game I have doubted our chances to beat osu on the road. Unless we are saving things for them, it seems like this season has come down to us having more talent than most teams and eventually just crushing their spirit. The defense doesn't force a ton of turnovers and our edge defense is not good, stribling is so soft on the perimeter. Osu will run at him all day. Our LB's seem slow, not saying we can't do it, but I really think it's a stretch. We don't seem to use peppers well on offense except for the same 3 sets. It's been a great season for sure, we will need a lot of breaks in Columbus as well as new wrinkles in offensively and defensively to pull off the upset.

His shoulder better not be badly hurt because they called two passing plays after he started favoring it.

This loss can be one of two things. The best thing that could've happened to this team (see osu last year) or the worst thing that could've happened to us (exposing weaknesses, losing mental focus). I tend to thing the former will happen. Harbaugh will light their asses up in the film room and have the prepared next week and again the week after in the shoe. Use this loss as motivation to get better.

I wouldn't say OSUs loss last year was "the best thing that could have happened to them". It cost them a shot at the playoff when they were clearly a top 4 team. But the overall point is valid. Our guys may have needed a gut-punch. Even Speight was starting to get "Hesiman Talk", which was kind of ridiculous honestly. Back down to earth and back to work.

Just doesn't have the offensive horses to be a title contender. Defense has some liabilities but over all I could see them being good enough for a national title. But our O-Line just isn't  any where near good enough as a whole, we don't have any elite playmakers at the RB or WR spot, and our QB just isn't good enough. Speight is a serviceable QB but put him on a less dominant team and he's a middle of the road player. Guys like Peters and McCaffery will hopefully be the guys to take us to the next level. As far as next year is concerned, as long as I can see good things from our younger players I'll call it a success. We just lose too much to expect anything more than 8 wins.

My thoughts exactly regarding this year's Offense and I hate saying it because our WRs seem like great people and our RBs have stuck it out at Michigan. Without a dynamic playmaker on O, we cannot win a NC. That's why Harbaugh has Peppers play so much on Offense.

The alignment of the stars had nothing to do with it. This one is squarely on Harbaugh, his coaches and the players.

The season was completely fucked last night. They'll win next week, but I can see a repeat of last year's game in two weeks.

I have zero confidence in this crew winning in Columbus.

and ridiculous outcome of PSU going to the Big 10 Championship game.  Hard to comprehend that PSU gets to go Big 10 Championship game if they beat Rutgers and Sparty and we lose one more conference game.   Something seems wrong about that.

They didn't face Wisconsin or Nebraska. Schedules are so imbalanced with 14 teams / 9 games (5 vs 4 at home) that it's always going to cast doubt on any team that advances to Indy via tiebreaker that doesn't face the top cross division opponents. We don't face Nebraska either, compared to Ohio, although beating Ohio would make it a full game lead Minnesota didn't face us or Ohio, another great example compared to Wisconsin Somehow this conference took imbalanced schedule back at 11 teams / 8 games and made it much worse. Another reason inviting rutgers/maryland is disastrous

But this may help them be less tight going to OSU than if they were carrying a perfect record into that game. They'll be an underdog, which may change the mind-set.

Then again, I didn't get a lot of sleep and maybe they'd have been underdogs anyway.

We have a good team. But we have built or rep by smashing bad football teams. When we've played teams with some talent it's been a dogfight. Colorado might have even beat us if they didn't lose their QB, Wisky was a dogfight and they were down their best player on D, MSU played us tough, and then Iowa beat us in the lines. Penny State is our best win vs a team with talent. Ow we've played no one with as much talent as we have yet, but that changes in 2 weeks in the road, Ohio has more talent than us and we're going to have to beat them by being tougher and making the right coaching calls and adjustments. Can we beat Ohio? Yes, but it's going to take a mighty effort and we're going to have to her some bounces.

Colorado: They didnt have the talent to match up with us. That was a compeitive game, but "dogfight" mischaracterizes what happneed.

Wisky: We left 9 points on the field. Field goals.

MSU: Game was never really in question. We fought off their best effort with a comfortable lead until a garbage-time touchdown. Not a dogfight.

If MSU had anything resembling a Red Zine offense they might have beaten us. But also, they exposed a couple weaknesses in D, mainly that you can run off tackle and if you run right at Peppers you are better off than running away from him. And Iowa showed that Speight is a different QB under pressure. No surprise, just about every QB is So what does this mean for Ohio? Well, they can run the balk and they can really pressure the QB, it's going to take a special effort to win that game and maybe a couple breaks.

Couldn't agree more. Team came out flat and it cost them the game but we still have everything in front of us. Hopefully this just becomes a wake up call and springs us foward.

Go Blue! Beat Indiana!

True statement. UM should be in the same position they were before if they win out. I get that people are upset and I am shocked they lost but holy shit. I fucking love this team and watch every damn game, but I'm glad I don't watch it like the roof jumpers. I couldn't handle it. Just last week this team "could beat Alabama in the playoffs." Just one week and a bad performance later and the Oline stinks, the QB stinks, they have figured out Don Brown's Defense OSU will destroys this team, etc. What about OSUs bad game?

And then there are some who truly believe we're going to win at OSU in 2 weeks with little more than just wearing Maize and Blue colored glasses. OSU has had more time with weaker opponents or harder road games to right their ship, we have only one more at home before we play. If this had happened earlier in the season, Id be inclined to agree with you but the OL including coaches looked like they all had some sort of PTSD. There are a lot of people just being more realistic. Theres a ton of game film showing the obvious weaknesses that haven't been fixed for a few weeks. There also was a lack of adjustment that was very similar to what happened last year.

I think people freak out because at this point there is no room for error and we just made a big one. When you have teams like osu who never loose, (unless they lay an egg) your only way to make it to the B1G championship game or CFP is to be undefeated or if everything lines up one loss.

Sometimes i wonder if the guys are worn out by using all their emotions and energy in the first 6-7 games. Same thing last year, we were playing lights out until msu then things started to slowly go down hill. I rather win each game by 20pts and have a more realistic expectatins than have this kind of swing where we cant score more than 13pts.

No, we are just playing better teams in tougher environments to play in.

The reality is that we feasted on very week teams in our home cocoon.  But bad teams have a way of making merely good teams look like great teams.  Rutgers made MSU look like they were ready for another shot at the CFP yesterday.  We all know better.

We are not a team without holes, and as more teams see them, they expose them.  Just like Minnesota and Indiana did last year.

We have work to do.

Mgodiscgolfer

has been and seems to continue to be. If I were getting ready for UM I would run outside opposite Peppers till they stopped it with any consistency then mix it up with middle at Peppers and out side opposite him. That is the only way to move the ball on the ground against this defense.

Now that there is a shit load of film we are in for a wild ride with Indy and OSU so UM needs to forget this happened at Iowa and get ready for the future. My main concern in the game against OSU is getting the offense to score and score. Wisconsin 14, Iowa 13, could be harbingers that scare the hell out of me. As well as second half performances at MSU, Iowa, Wisconsin, and a couple other that could be attributed to first half totals that would make running the ball more important than scoring.

I'm more irritated that we burned our only leeway. Not that we had much, but there was hope that a close loss to OSU could still potentially get us into the playoff. That opportunity is gone. With all the other high profile upsets yesterday if we just did our job and won it would have made that possibility even more of an option. Now we have to play perfectly. Hopefully all the bad juju is burned off in this game.
