Iowa roll call and visitor suggestions

Submitted by WhoopinStick on

Making my first road trip to the University of Iowa on Friday where I'll be meeting up with several other Michigan fans that will also be first timers.   For those that have been there before we'd greatly appreciate any recommendations for places to go Friday night, things to do during the day on Saturday, and suggestions for best spots for tailgating!

Who else is making the road triip this weekend?

Especially for somewhere as out of the way as Iowa City. Will be visiting the great state of Iowa (preparing that phrase for my presidential run) for the first time. Tailgating with some Hawkeye acquaintances and will be high-fiving all Michigan fans. See you there.

All games are road games for me since I live out of state, but this will be my first non-Big House game of the year. Looking forward to it as I've never been to Kinnick.

When I bought my game tickets, they were a lot more expensive then they are now. I got third row on the isle right behind our bench. Now I'm seeing 6th row in 106 for only $145 each! I wish I would've waited. Also - the point spread to this game was a lot smaller when I bought them. Who knew Iowa was going to have the season that they are having though?

I may have also got the last hotel room in Cedar Rapids. I booked it a few weeks ago. I wish I would've book that a lot earlier and waited on the tickets.

third trip to Iowa City.  It's a fucking blast.  Friendly people, best in B1G, IMO.  flying into Chicago from SoCal, bussing it to the game with the gang.  can't wait.

Checking in. There will be six of us, tailgating at the golf course to remind me of home. I read they kick everyone out immediately after the game. Traffic should be fun.

Watch out because Dubuque street (the normal way to get to campus from I-80) is under construction and is down to one lane each way. This will really impact people tailgating at Hancher.

The MGoBlog crew will all be driving in on Saturday and tailgating with Demorest. Keep an eye on twitter--after we get enough beers in him I'm sure we can get him to disclose the location.

I'm heading up, although I haven't bought a ticket yet.  Iowa fan coworker of mine recommends the Hawkeye Express train from Coralville for anyone who would otherwise be parking a car near the stadium.  The train begins four hours before kickoff and appears to run every half an hour.  If the area around Kinnick is anything like the area around Beaver Stadium, I could easily see this being faster, especially post-game...

Jebus there are a lot of you coming.  Wear blue so that you are not confused with any of us that might be wearing gold.  Too bad the blue will blend in with those wearing black during a night game.  Yeah, I'm not a happy Hawkeye right now.

Craft beer lovers.  30hop in Coralville for good food and 60 taps.  Winestyles 2 doors down has stuff for you to take back.  Backpocket brewing is in the same area, but is meh.  Vesta has good food and a smalll but good list.

If you find yourself downtown, Joe's, Shorts Burgers and Shine, and Donnelly's for good beers and food, except for Joe's which is just drinks.

Other good places to eat and drink in the Coralville area are Monica's, Wig and Pen, the Vine, ReUnion brewing.

Downtown?  Um, whatcha looking for?

Tailgating supplies, any HyVee will have plenty of food and booze for you.

Just don't gloat too much after the beat down please, we're already feeling pretty down/angry, depending on your personality.  But hey, at least we haven't collapsed like Sparty.

Could somebody bring some Brewery Vivant or or something unique from OddSide?  Haven't been on a Michigan beercation since April.

Our group will be tailgating at the golf course. How does it work vets? Can we get a big group of mgobloggers together? There will be 4 of us. I was looking to park next to a few true fans. We are looking at getting there around 11:30 - 12:00 with a tv grill and a good time. [email protected] - it me up so we can get together.

Leave earlier. There's a ton of road construction on I-80 between Lasalle and Geneseo, or at least there was last weekend.  Many miles of one lane and 55mph speed limit.  It did "appear" to be pretty much completed, but this is the Illinois DOT, so who knows if they pulled all the ******* barrels and cones yet.

Moonraker's or Short's Burgers; Wig and Pen or Pagliai Pizza; Orchard Green, Chez Grace or Baroncini for fine dining; Hamburg Inn for breakfast; Basta (Italian), La Regia Taqueria (Mexican), Monica's, Atlas Grill, Blackstone or Iowa River Power for more standard dining.

My favorite out of the way, secret haunt is Red's Alehouse in North Liberty.  Great beer selection and food.  Not that far away, probably 10-15 minutes away.
