Field Goal Franklin whining about satellite camps

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Found the clown that was roaming the PSU campus the other day!

“I was like, the poster boy for satellite camps (two years ago). I don’t know why, but I was,” he said. “Somebody else has become the poster boy for satellite camps now. That’s fine with me. And it’s gotten out of control, like a lot of things in life and a lot of things in our profession. It’s gotten into extremes again, and I don’t think that’s what anybody wants.”

“I don’t think it should be with third parties, recruiting services or things like that,” he said. “I think it should be on college campuses with college staffs. If you want to go somewhere else and do it, great. But it should be run by colleges. I think we’re asking for trouble with those things.”

Well unfortunately I can never truly beat it, as it's not curable. I'm starting chemo and radiation next week to try to fight as much as possible but mainly that's just status management. After treatment I'll just receive biannual MRIs so that when it starts growing again we don't get caught off guard.

Yeah. Leave it to a Buckeye and a Nittany Lion to get into an argument on a Michigan blog after midnight I suppose. Personally, I don't care to hear what anybody associated with Penn State has to say about any type of question on what's best for kids. As a whole, their fan base has shown little to no compassion or regret for what their administration is responsible for. Even still, that turned hostile out of nowhere. So as you said... *grabs popcorn*

It is an enabling culture that has universally resisted accountability. Any fan will be associated with that enabling culture until they work collectively to cleanse themselves of it. If a Nittany fan isn't actively working to remove JoePa the Pedo Enabler from campus, he is open to scrutiny.

they are the ones who also proposed this (no more satelitte camps at high schools).  This is not some minority opinion that Franklin has.

As for why I believe that --- recruiting is what it is, and camps not being held at high schools reduces the likelihood of coaches making under-the-table deals with respective high school coaches.

There are still plenty of colleges/Universities in the South that will partner with northern schools to host camps.  I guarantee these camps will still occur, even if a high school ban is put in palce.

It sounds whining when Franklin does not offer an opinion on why it is bad. Not done by just college staff? That is why it should be stopped? So, if Michigan asks 1000 Michigan fans and students to be hired as temps and work the camps across the nation, would Franklin be ok? It just sounds to me that Franklin plays it safe too much, just like the FGs.

for Satellite camps in the past as a badge of honor. Then says someone who he won't name is the new poster child as if it is something to be ashamed of by using words like extreme and oversight as in lack there of simultaniously acting like he is above pointing fingers. Well any one who follows college sports or can Google Satellite camps will see Jim Harbaugh with a bullhorn in his hand. There's no point in naming him. Raises my bullshit antenna, and my weasle detector. Thats another problem I have with newly named Fieldgoal Franklin.

You do know what a 'satellite camp' is, right?  Why should they be hosted only by colleges?

Do high schools not have the ability, or right (for lack of better term) to host a camp for local kids to learn about football, or learn new drills in an effort to improve themselves at the game?  And if they do have that right, why then should they not be able to invite guests to organize and run them?  Why shouldn't a high school coach seek out a college coach (or an NFL coach) in an effort to improve his coaching ability and players abilities?

I don't get your opinion as to why a camp should be limited to colleges.  Please explain yourself...

camps for years, Lacrosse, Volleyball, not to mention the psuedo satellite camps that are AAU for bball, but Harbaugh comes along and does it with college football and a bunch of pansies get their panties in a bunch because he's doing too many camps, and they don't want to do that much themselves, so instead of trying to work harder and keep up, they try and force the NCAA to regulate how hard Harbaugh can work.

What a bunch of crap, and your coach comes across as the pitiful loser he is once again.  Hey Franklin, get better at your job, and maybe next time you won't be embarrassed by Harbaugh, instead of whining about how hard Harbaugh works and trying to get someone else to slow him down for you.

make so damned much money and are attached to institutions of higher learning. . . thank god we have one with credibility and a brain.

OTOH, Penn State and Franklin deserve one another; long may he whine.

They already signed that "can't miss" coach to a 6 year, 25 million deal. He's a wealthy man who hit .666 in his last two seasons of a three season tenure in Tennessee. So convinced was he, and apparently he convinced PSU's administration (not difficult to fool them) the SEC was so tough - he actually voted three conference teams above No. 1 ND in 2012 - that running roughshold over the Big Ten would be a piece of cake. Well they bought it and he's rewarded them, with recruits far above the level he had at the superior academic school, Vanderbilt, with a Brady Hoke life .550 winning pct.

Of course they showed their negotiation skills when it came to bonuses. He will never achieve any. They include winning the conference, appearing in the conference championship game, making the college playoffs, winning the NC, just things he will never come close to. Hahaha. So yeah, his big money is guaranteed. Another brilliant move.

But they gave him a pat on the back after the MI game and said something along the lines of, "PSU will never get their asses handed to them on the field." I was like, WTF? Didn't that just happen? If we can't get them out of the conference, I'll accept him as a consolation prize for staying in.

JH found a loophole, caught everyone off guard and won in the end. He and the staff did everything by the book and when the SEC called for a closer look, they found kids from all skill sets and backgrounds getting a chance to receive coaching from teams outside of the South. A lot of this was less about the elite players going elsewhere, as they have the opportunity to take official visits, and more about the middling or overlooked prospects (in which the bulk of most teams are made of) catching the eye of coaches to play for better quality teams across the country.

Jimmy,if he feels strongly enough, might be able to convince Manuel to get on board with an antitrust suit.  You may not remember but last spring, when the NCAA was talking about limiting camps, there was some noise from congress which had to be heard by the NCAA.

Harbaugh found a way to gain a competitive advantage for a time, and good for him.

But that's how these things go: when someone finds a "competitive advantage", others either (1) adapt, (2) seek to regulate to (somewhat) negate the competitive advantage, or (3) a combination of the two.

That's the way of the world in many different things.

As you said, the damage is done at this point.

what exact damage has been done to all parties? The only damage was to certian schools own the geographic advantages in recruiting. Harbaugh had a lot of fun attending camps, and he still can go next year, nothing will change.

This make the grey area become more standarized practices for coaches to attend the camps. SEC school won't be able to shut down the the regions as there are many DI, DII programs in every states to host the camps.

I am curious if Harbaugh can sitll go to Australia with the new rule.

When Notre Dame and Penn State were scheduling these camps no one cared. They didn't even care when Michigan started doing it, but when Jim Harbaugh scheduled 38 camps all over other schools turf that's when it became a problem. If he didn't upset the balance it would have been fine.

If Florida and Alabama scheduled 20 camps in Ohio you can bet coaches up here would be raising hell too.

I've been of the opinion that Harbaugh was, at least in part, trying to take the Michigan name to the center of the sporting news.  The program's history was not as front and center as it was before RichRod and Hoke. JH succeeded admirably. Every recruit in America, whether they come here or not, knows an awful lot more about the program than the did before Harbaugh's arrival.

Now, with Harbaugh winning lots of games and with the program ranked so highly, I'm not sure it is necessary for JH to approach camps with the same fervor, although Harbaugh might do so simply because it helps kids and promotes football.
