Week 1: Best thing you saw...

Submitted by mi93 on

While I watch a lot of games each week, I don't see it all and thought it'd be interesting to hear what was the one thing that you saw that reminded you that nothing beats college football.

Since it's first time effort I'll offer two:

1) Nebraska's missing man punt formation;

2) Texas players lifing Charlie Strong after beating ND in 2OT.

NOTE: This could be a fun weekly thing, but neg away if it's not an interesting item to post each week.  Have a great week all.

For Michigan:

1) Speight was able to shake off that pick and play pretty well the rest of the day. Hoping to see him build off that performance.
2) Completely disregarding quality of opponent, defense is as advertised. Hoping Mone and Charlton will be ready to go by conference play.

Outside of Michigan:
1) Easily the Nebraska tribute. Some things are far bigger than football. Truly touching moment.
2) Notre Dame losing
3) Tennessee almost blowing it vs. App State. I knew they'd somehow weasel their way into winning, but it's great to see their hype knocked down a peg or two.
4) Houston taking down Oklahoma. Not a Herman fan, but man he's a great coach, and I believe he is the next Urban Meyer. His team put on a show against the #3 team in America on Saturday. Look for him on the sidelines at LSU, Auburn, Texas, or Texas A&M next Fall.

Outside the box a little:
Of course Michigan!!!!!
I watched Stanford/K State the other night, McCaffrey is unbelievable!! I thought Stanford would win handily. K State was having none of that. They may be better than people thought. Or maybe Stanford isn't as good as people thought? Interesting nonetheless.

To be fair, Ole Miss and FSU played each other, LSU played Wisconsin, and Oklahoma played Houston. All of whom are light years better on defense than Hawaii.

Don't get me wrong: I'm encouraged by what we saw on Saturday, but it still remains to be seen just how good our OL actually is.

A perfect game is impossible, and even really good teams often look shakey in season openers, but, Michigan will have a hard time improving on that performance this week. The QBs completed 85% of their passes, we rushed for over 300 yards, no fumbles, no drops, scored on every possession, 100% third down conversions, 100% red zone scoring (all touchdowns), 60 point win, near shut out, two defensive scores and even the second, third and fourth string players continued the near flawless play. An amazing game.

The best thing for Michigan was that all of the urgent pre-season questions were answered.  And the answer was YES.

- QB going to be OK?  YES.

- Running game going to be OK?  YES.

- Linebackers going to be OK?  YES.

- Defense going to be able to absorb Don Brown's system?  YES.

- Unis going to look good?  YES. /s

I'll preface this by saying that the best thing I saw this weekend was football. It's so hard to not love watching it and especially when Michigan does so well.
Best things I saw this week:
1. Michigan won- concerns about QB were calmed.
2. ND lost in one of the best games I've seen in a long time. Perhaps Texas is back, but I'm just going to say it was a fun game to watch.
3. State struggled. Yes, I'm a bitter person, I have not forgotten one of the worst days of my life less than a year ago. I'm bitter, mad, angry, and mean. I want to see every Spartan cry like I did after that terrible Saturday afternoon last fall.
4. The SEC did not have the weekend they wanted to have, and that makes me happy. I live in the south because that's where I have a job. I have to hear fans make stupid comments about the SEC. This weekend quieted them ever so slightly. This makes me happy and makes my life easier.

I enjoyed seeing Tennessee in a dogfight with ASU, Furman moving the ball pretty much at will against Sparty, and Charlie Strong being hoisted up by his team. I hope the win over ND and the upsets of Baylor and Oklahoma last year convince them to give Strong time to rebuild the program.

The Michigan defense. I watched quite a bit of football, and the Michigan defense was among the top units I saw. They are aggressive and swarm to the ball. I thought that the Texas defense was awful. They managed to win that game against Notre Damned, but they looked really bad. Hats off to the Michigan defensive coaches for putting together this very impressive defensive unit.
