NBA moves All-Star Game from Charlotte

Submitted by Lionsfan on

It's being reported basically everywhere, but the NBA is following through on its threat to move the All-Star game out of North Carolina over recent bigoted laws aimed at the LGBTQ community.

Without any movement by state legislators in North Carolina to change newly enacted laws targeted at the LGBT community, the NBA is pulling the 2017 All-Star Game out of Charlotte, league sources told The Vertical.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver had threatened to move All-Star Weekend out of Charlotte unless a discriminatory North Carolina law aimed at the state’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community was changed – and time to do so has run out because of the logistics and planning the NBA needs to run its marquee midseason event, league sources said.

The league is reportedly looking towards New Orleans as a replacement host.

Jordan's quote was an answer to a reporter asking him why he didn't get involved in political issues.  If I recall correctly, he had been asked to endorse the political opponent of a senator who had said something racist.

His quote is about preserving his marketability and acting in his own self-interest, not about how sports stars shouldn't get involved in politics. If a sports star - or anyone else who people listen to - wants to use their fame to spread a message, why shouldn't they?  You don't have to listen if you don't want to.

I look forward to the day when corporations stop pretending to be about anything other than what is best for their bottom line.  The idea that businesses represent the social mores of our society feels somewhat .... disingenuous.

Good for North Carolina for standing the ground, and not folding under the pressure/bullying of the LGBT community.

Charlotte is the second largest financial center in the US.  If Bank of America, Wells Fargo, etc are faced with boycotts, laws will change.  Politicians will always answer to money and if the money walks, they know their jobs will also.  One weekend loss of revenue, especially the NBA ASG is not enough to move them.

Skin color is one thing, but forcing you personal, sexual preferances onto others is one entirely. The LGBT movememt is a slap in the face to blacks who faced actual oppression in the United States at the hands of the democrats. Being gay or trans is not normal, it is a mental issue and should be treated as such.

Take every gender specific bathroom and make it unisex. Business then have 2 unisex bathrooms or "family" bathrooms. One of our local kroger's did this, mentioning on the sign that they care for the likes of "gender choices, single dad's with little daughters, single mom's with little sons, etc." It listed a bunch of people that unisex restrooms can help make more comfortable. If you have a large restroom, like in a stadium for example, then you likely have some money to make some changes. Take every 2 stalls and combine them, make each double stall a unisex restroom. Could even put a sink in there if you wanted to and turn the regular sink space into more stall space. Viola. A bunch of unisex bathrooms that everyone can do their business in (even if it's just "freshening up") and be as comfortable as you possibly can be in a public restroom.

There's a reason we stay away from politics around here. Lots of random people showing up to stir stuff up. The NBA made a business decision and maybe it will spur on a discussion about these LGBTQ issues.

I am socially conservative by Canadian standards, but I think transgendered people should piss where ever they want. I worked with a transgendered person (m2f) when I was an intern last summer. It would have been akward as fuck to meet her in the bathroom. It was a non-issue because the women at work treated her with respect and were comfortable with her. Nice lady, worked hard and didn't bother anyone. That said, the celebration of LGBT has exploded in Canada. Can't rent a freaking bike without it being draped with gay pride colours in Toronto. I just want to ride a bike not making a statement.

I work in downtown Toronto and I don’t think anyone thinks that by renting one of the communal bike share bikes with rainbow wheels on it that you’re trying to make a statement. I don’t think it says anything about you at all. I also don’t think it says much about the company who rents them other than they are looking for another way to make a buck, and if that’s by being inclusive so be it. Pride in Toronto is a money making event plain and simple, it is completely removed from any political agenda. The way you know this was the reaction to Black Lives Matter making a political statement and everyone getting pissed off. This is commerce plain and simple.

Maybe I shouldn't be surprised, but I really am shocked at the outspoken support of discrimination in the community here. If not for the no politics rule, I don't think I could read the board.

This is an example on how we have became the biggest pussies ever. All this bs because a dude dresses like a girl and wants to piss where ever he wants. Fucking grow some balls America. What a bunch of punk bitches we have become. Just because some dude would rather be penetrated by a dick does not make him a woman. He's still a man. It's fucking science. All day long the left wants to combat religion with science. But now that science goes against their agenda....
