Rumor: Harbaugh to hold satellite camp in American Samoa!

Submitted by ThadMattasagoblin on
I was listening to the huge show yesterday and Sam Webb was on talking about satellite camps. Apparently, there is a possibility that Harbaugh holds a camp in American Samoa along with Hawaii.

Please, oh PLEASE, let this be true. And I hope he makes it a giant affair where he invites all coaches to be keynote speakers again. More SEC shaming!!!

I believe I saw somwhere that Samoa produces more NFL players per capita than anywhere else and they have almost no resources. Their equipment is typically in poor condition yet they still manage to play good football. Michigan holding an anual camp there would be huge.

This guy is a genius! Or maybe he's just all of us, but with the money and ability to put his ideas into action. Either way it's a joy to see

Make a camp at every NATO base for the good coverage. Somewhere he should investigate an underwater camp and drop a camp in a Sumo school in Japan. Beef up that line.

Harbaugh is looking beyond mere recruiting.  He is a missionary for the game of football.  He knows it's under fire and he wants to help keep it alive.

I've actually been to American Samoa.  Even if Harbaugh doesn't get any recruits out of there, it could be really beneficial for a couple of reasons:

1. A round trip ticket from Detroit costs $2,000 minimum, and there are only three flights a week that go there, all from Honolulu.  Meaning, if you're a Samoan high school star, unless you have a relative in the NFL, you're not going to be able to afford to go to camps on the mainland.  For a two star recruit, a satellite camp might be the only way they ever get noticed.  (This assumes they can get some lower level coaches to go out to the camp.)

2. Samoans love football, and as others have noted, they produce a ton of talent.  But it's still a poor area.  When I was there, they really needed football equipment, especially for younger kids.  Could we start up a collection to raise money?  Think about it: we can't bribe recruits.  But suppose someone started a charity to buy top-of-the-line equipment for every high school and middle school in American Samoa, and everything is stamped, "The Wolverine Fund."  It's practically like being a bagman.

While he is out there, drop a camp in a Sumo school in Japan and get some lineman.
