HBO Real Sports - Rutgers sucks, and so does EMU

Submitted by The Mad Hatter on

Did anyone else catch Real Sports the other night?  They did a piece about the massive amounts of money Rutgers (and EMU) are wasting on athletics, football in particular.

It was pretty great.  Rutgers has lost $312 million over the past decade and EMU $52 million over just the past two years.

Michigan wasn't mentioned but the piece did refer to a "couple dozen" programs that make money or at least break even.

saying this for years. They have to compete with UM on Saturdays, which doesn't help and having attended EMU myself most people never attended a game.

if UM didn't have a team for some reason, attendance at Eastern would still be the pits. Tens of thousands of UM alum traveling far and wide to get to the stadium aren't gonna start doing so for Eastern vs Bowling Green

How on earth is THAT the problem? They spend a gazillion dollars on a sport not generating nearly that level of revenue -- that's football, not womens field hockey.

If you were a for-profit business you'd get out of the football market because its a huge loss. I dont get how you blame women's sports for football spending.

Football is not the money loser, it's the only money maker. It funds all the other sports in an athletic department. I'm not in defense of doing away with Title IX but blindly defending it is also silly. It isn't all football spending. Rutgers had $40mm in revenue last year, they spent $76mm. That $40MM didn't come from revenue sports and football didn't cost $76mm to run.

One of my degrees is from EMU. I hope they keep football, but could justify moving to 1A or D2.

Just too hard to get people interested with AA and UM literally next door. So many commuters as undergrads as well. I went to Michigan games and visited friends at other colleges on weekends. Not to mention Detroit pro teams.

Too expensive and too many schools in DI.
EMU is one of many schools where students subsidize sports. Clearly, this has to be reviewed not just at EMU, but any school that is losing money and charging fees and higher tuition to support varsity sports.

State aid is a joke now for public universities, so money sucking varsity sports only compound the cost of education. One might even question supporting athletic scholarships at the DII level if the sports can't pay there or the AD can't support other required sports.

EMU competes well in other sports, and, I agree that Creighton is a good coach, but,
frankly, part of the football issue is a self fulfilling prophesy. What fans support losing programs? Not many, even schools with tremendous FB history like Michigan had big drop offs in support with a few bad years.

We would probably be surprised how many universities are in this boat.

Even if those numbers are inflated by inclusion of figures like lost tuition from scholarships, there is no doubt the issue is endemic and a big reason why costs of attending college have sky rocketed.

while rutgers may recover due to the cost sharing in a major conference, i find it indefensible that a commuter school that's struggling to survive is also blowing tens of millions on football...

oh and i also find it indefensible for EMU

probably dozens of D1 teams should be shutdown

Says a lot about the Detroit media that Terry Foster is reporting on HBO's reporting of a school in his backyard and a school in his conference. Nobody could've noodled through public docs?

To FORCE colleges to make the diecisions that EMU must face regarding football. The money game the "Power 5" is playing should be stopped, and the thing blown up for anti-trust violations.

ALL college sports is a farce- a hypocrittical farce where EVERYONE pretends to play school just to make money and pay fat-ass middle aged white men millions of dollars to look the other way while the "student" athletes run amok on college campuses all over the country.

And all for message board posers to align themselves with a school to feed their starving egos and despearate need for friends and credibility.

Fans are the true hypocrites in all this. They think everyone is cheating but their school, overlook the bullshit that goes on at the school they pretend to have attended, and spend BILLIONS to watch this shit.

EMU is a trash can fire! Campus and surrounding apartment complexes are not safe. The university is just throwing money at football and many other athletic programs in hopes that it will increase student involvement on the weekends and entice students to live on or near campus rather than commute.
