GA passes law that lets schools delay FOIA responses, literally admits it's about sports

Georgia passed "Kirby's Law," which allows its public universities' athletic departments to wait up to 90 days to respond to requests for information. Not only the info itself, but just the RESPONSE which should really take less than a week (e.g., "we got it, we'll get back to you").

Governor's spokesman said this: “it simply levels the playing field with other states that also have strong athletic programs like Georgia.”

Lieutenant governor said, “I hope it brings us a national championship.”

The implication is that winning teams hide their shit, and now Georgia teams can too. At a certain point, shit becomes more important than sports. They could at least do us the courtesy of PRETENDING it was about something else.

Edit: I hope this doesn't violate the no politics rule since it's about sports (see: governor's statement)

You've put it extremely well:

If there's any connection between FOIA response time and winning football games, something is terribly wrong.

It's astounding an entire state legislature would be so crass as to proudly allow schools to delay responses to lawful requests for information in an attempt to gain a competitive edge.  It speaks volumes about a state's real priorities.

Google "Gridiron Secret Society" if you want a bit more on the rotteness of this aspect of the Peach State.

Sometimes I think, ya know just spitballin' here, that maybe we Americans have lost perspective on our sports. Just sayin'. Not to point fingers or anything, but it does sometimes seem that we have crossed into territory where 'Here there be monsters'.

They passed a law that let's them get away with playing dirty in the hopes of winning. Wow. In the words of Ricky "that's so fucked" seriously though, on the same day 2 players are arrested on gun charges the administration comes out and declared they intend to cheat. What the actual fuck?

How long until the state of Georgia is sued over this? I'm not a lawyer, but I have to imagine that it's only a matter of time until someone or some organization sues the state and cites these quotes. I can't imagine this stands up against any real legal challenge or scrutiny.

It's possible. It could be argued that the state isn't acting in good faith. But the legislature does have the ability to change these things. My guess is that if the state government doesn't voluntarily change the timeframe back, it would take a state supreme Court ruling. Meaning that if you submitted a FOIA today, it's possible that a court ruling would be delivered before your request is acknowledged ;)

this shit is minor compared to American politics in 2016.  Pretty tough to argue corruption in anything these days, because it is so prevalent .. where the fuck does anyone start ?

Thank God football must be played on the field, where coaching and personal perserverance of the athletes typically is rewarded ... maybe not in a "Natty", but there is pride in accomplishment for all of us that work hard (oops sorry Hugh Freeze) and play with a sense of integrity (which is FAR different than playing "by the rules").

This is scary honestly. If this were the case here in Michigan Dave Brandon might still he here. The way governments and higher institutions hide information already is bad enough.

Didn't it come out during the email scandal that Brandon had someone on staff deleting his emails in direct violation of the state's FOIA laws? I think he was required to keep all emails archived for a prescribed period of time, but that someone had been specifically directed to clear out his archive in regular (and from what I remember, pretty short) intervals.

More government will fix everything.  In my tree I'm the ruler and I have all the power.  There are never any problems. For me. When there is a problem its because I drink too much and fall out of the tree.  I have severe brain lacerations now. That's why my go and as get as it potato be.

Holy shit.

http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2016/3/28/11317462/geogria-football-records-law-kirby-smart.

This article expands a bit on this issue, and my god, is Kirby Smart a fucking sack of shit.  He is sternly refusing to allow any transfers to...Miami?  Because reasons?

"One of the reasons I put Miami on there was I wanted to set the precedent for the future, that kids would not be able to go to Miami right away," Smart said. "It's very important you understand that. That's pretty much standard operating procedure when a coach leaves one place, that a kid can't go there with the coach. That's important to me that people understand that."

Fuck this guy.  Fuck the unlimited power that college football coaches wield over state law, their players, and anything else.  It's very important that you understand that.
