and since childhood attended many games of the various Sports of the University? or how about liking another professional team from another city that you do not live in? your statement about being a fan of a college team you didn't attend makes little sense to most people. and remember fan is short for fanatic.

While we can all agree to disagree about whether we enjoy a rival going up in flames, however, I agree with WD that it is beyond stupid to bring up the "well he didn't go to school there" bit.

I know many U of M grads who could care less about the school's teams vs. many passionate fans (like yourself) who are not alums.

I was a fan before i was a student at UM. My daughters life has ben saved twice by Motts and I am a big fan of that hospital - but I was not a med school grad. I get it can be a great feeling of accomplishment to get an M degree but M creates value for more people than just the folks that earn the degree. Why can't they be fans too?

You can't quantify an alumnus' ties to the school in athletics fandom years because the two experiences are just not fungible. Arguing your bonds to the UNIVERSITY are stronger than the bonds of someone who actually attended the school is bordering on the insane. Perhaps to the athletic department, but certainly not to the University as a whole.

Fungibility - really?

When the fuck did "mutual interchangability" have anything at all to do with the appreciation of excellence?

UM is excellent. My daughter's life was saved twice by Mott hospital - don't you fucking pretend that you have anything close to my level of appreciation or experience with the UM simply because you have a degree.

Oh and by the way I graduated from The Michigan B school in 89.

Agree That's garbage talk. non alum fans will never have the bond as alums. More power to them and holy hell yes they are appreciated but a stronger bond than those who attended the school, hung out with players attended class with them trekked from dorm to stadium after wins and losses? .

That's the most ridiculous thing I've read on this board in at least 24 hours.

So I am basically hearing from a few people that I can't really feel a tie to UM as a fan because I didn't attend or graduate from UM.  I am 67 years old and have been a fan since I can remember.  I chose to go into the military and make it a career of 24 years after I graduated high school, so didn't get to attend UM.  But I guess since I went and served my country while other people were going to UM makes it so that I am not that much of a fan.  This is what is wrong with this country and people's attitudes today, enough said by me!

That's not at all what anyone (rational) is saying.

This whole thing started when WD told everyone they should only be happy for a day about MSU losing since Michigan lost too, name-calling anyone a Sparty that finds some solace in MSU's season being over too. Basically telling others how to be a fan. Naturally someone who actually attended UM found the irony in his statement and pointed it out.

People can be fans of whatever team they want however they want, regardless of their situation. What they cannot, and should not do, is tell others how to be fans whether they themself are an alum or someone who makes superguides for fun; that is the Spartan-like behavior.

And thank you for your service! Go Blue.

whether they went to UM or not. If they applied and were turned down or could not afford it I feel they they are above those who did not.

I don't feel any UM fan is above another. As fans of the maize and blue we all share a common interest in that we love and support The Michigan Wolverines. Some fans are more fanatical than others but that doesn't put them "above" or "beneath" anyone else. Some went to school there, some spent their entire lives cheering for them, some were fans before some of the students ever even attended grade school, let alone college. To suggest that one can't be a true fan or doesn't feel as passionate about their reason for loving Michigan if they didn't attend the school as a student is about as ignorant a logic as I've heard or seen. I expect that kind of rhetoric from spartan fans. How many seats would the Big House really fill if only people who went to the school or currently goes to the school were the only Michigan fans that could attend?
