Great Sam Webb article on Rashan Gary's decision

Submitted by MC5-95 on

Sam has a new (free) post up in which he interviews Rashan's mom about the decision. It was closer than we (maybe) thought. But he chose the good guys.

My favorite quote: "He picked Michigan so we will pack up all the gear,” said Coney.  “And I did. I packed up all of his Alabama, USC and all of his gear that he's collected over the last four years, I put it in a box, and took it to the Salvation Army. You chose Michigan and that's where you're going to be."

is notorious for being dirty as shit in recruiting. They may hide it better these days but they are SEC caliber shitcruiters. I have direct proof and word of this and it's not even a secret around the players/program. Did they offer Gary and family anything? I don't know because I wasn't there and they'll likely never say. I'd bet they did based on what I know of other players but that's all I'll say.

or ever - but thank God for Gary listening to Him.

I enjoy that Rashan and others in this class want to return M to championships. If he can back up his words he will be Woodson legendary. I have faith in You Rashan.

My parents are very involved with boosters at Clemson and they swear up and down it is clean.  The only thing I have seen that seems a bit iffy is some of their friends have players over for really nice Steak type dinners.  Their close friends have groups of guys over regularly and cook them great food.  Those friends aren't poor, but certainly are loaded where they could be giving $100 or $500 handshakes and not feel it.

I know it used to be dirty down there and I think they even had some issues with a previous coaching staff, but they really think Dabo is doing it the right way.

I replied earlier with how dirty I know (for a fact) they are. I'm talking specifics. Yet, I'll admit that what I know is almost all pre-dabo and only a year in at the latest, IIRC. I wouldn't bet in it but he could have cleaned it up or done his best to. Fans need to realize that the HC does determine whether this stuff goes on. Clean coaches staight up make it known at Alum/donor functions that there will be consequences to doing things that could harm the coach behind his back, etc. Basically, it's addressed. The sad fact is that most coaches take a "see no evil" approach in that they know it goes on and want it to go on. They just want it to go on outside of all coach-to-booster contact. Hugh Freeze doesn't think he's god's gift to recruiting - trust me. He knows why many kids end up in bumfuck Mississippi all the sudden and regardless of on-field performance.

Another telling quote: "That was a turn off,” Coney said of the negative recruiting. “Bring your program up. Tell me about all the good things that your program, your school, and the people on your staff do. Don't kick this person in the back. Nobody likes Michigan. Nooobody likes Michigan. When Rashan picked Michigan, my phone stopped ringing. It was a blessing." Finally, Michigan is feared and recruits hear it in the lame pitch from our competition. Gary will help take the program to a new level.

Guess I was wrong.... But thanks for sharing, it's definitely great to hear the stories of other schools going out of their way to bash Michigan instead of selling their program. I hope and am fairly confident that's not how we recruit.
