Eddie McDoom decommits from Oregon, will visit Michigan this coming weekend

Submitted by AnthonyThomas on

This is according to 247. We are back in the running for best named recruit.

Also, Steve Wiltfong has ballz'd Kiante Enis to IU. This might be thread worthy but the board is probably ballz'd out for the day.

Edit: Ryan Bartow, one of 247's lead analysts, has ballz'd McDoom to Michigan. It appears that this is happening.

I guess it's who you believe. No names have been mentioned specifically, but kids 'committing' even without a coaching staff willing to accept it, is a thing. Has happened to to UM and other schools. Problem is the a school can't comment about it public ally because it's a recruiting violation. Not that they care much anyway probably.

I don't understand why people keep saying he isn't a high priority. He blew up his senior year. His senior film is crazy good. The staff saw how much he improved and offered him a scholly. Just like notre dame did. It's really not hard to understand. He's a 4 star on 247 and is soon to be a 4 star on scout. Go watch his film and tell me that he would be a guy that the coaches don't really want.

I think that may happen in some cases, but I don't think that's the situation with Nate Johnson from the coaches' end. I do think that he may have used the bump in notoriety to see what else is out there, and why not? Kids use "commitments" as placeholders all the time.

Well, now Nate Johnson is being recruited by Brian Kelly and Notre Dame. And I think Kelly has a pretty good eye for talent, or at least a skill in developing it. If Kelly wants him, that's a good sign that the kid has some talent. Kelly has done a good job of getting productive wideouts in his system over the last few years (Will Fuller, C.J. Prosise, Chris Brown, Corey Robinson, etc.).

I guess it doesn't matter (bc, Harbaugh trust) but all these receivers seem small. Aren't McDoom, Pie, Johnson, Crawford, and Evans all like 5-11?

Did I say he was strictly a slot?

No, I said he was a slot. As in I think he's a slot WR. I still do.

I never said he couldn't ever play outside or anything like that...I'm not sure how you misinterpreted what I said as a 100% can never change type thing.

I was stating where I think he plays.

I think Hudson is a Peppers hybrid space player...does that mean he can't strictly play SS or OLB? Not at all.

I think Crawford should start out playing slot receiver, because that's his best shot at playing in 2016. Maybe he can beat out Grant Perry. But long-term, I think Crawford could very well play on the outside. He's strong enough and a good enough route runner to deal with those corners.

We are, in effect, lining up future recruits to man both positions. There are no two other positions that require like skill sets. Those that can catch normally stay on offense. Those that don't defend those that do. A combination of both talents results in a Woodson.

So without really stating where he plans to play them, they are listed by the recruiting sites at a certain position while those that have proven they can play effectively at multiple position receive the label, athlete.  No matter how you view it, getting as many great athletes assembled together definitely increases the chances that play makers at all positions should emerge from such a gathering.

I will use RoJo as the prime example. Heading into his junior year, he was rated the no. 1 db in his class. After an injury and announcement that he would play only offense his senior year, he was rated as the no. 1 receiver in his class.

absolutely - sign multiple athletes approx 6'0" 180-200 lbs with versatile skill sets, toughness and quick feet, then roll out the footballs and see who fits where each year.  i think its much better strategy than signing class after class of mostly 6'3" dudes only projected to play outside WR (not slot or DB or RB or whatever) along with few slot specialists mixed in.  coaches just need to find the most gifted and competitve athletes possible (regardless of prototypical size, metrics, etc) with an eye always on depth chart and projected future numbers.  like what theyre doing in most cases

I'll guess they finish with... WR Eddie McDoom TE Chase Allen DL Michael Dwumfour DL Rashan Gary LB/DE Joshua Uche CB David Long ATH Khaleke Hudson K Quin Nordin That's 8 guys so I think they'd have to drop/greyshirt 1 or 2 maybe (not sure on the math here) and I'd guess that either be Nate Johnson to Notre Dame, or maybe Rashad Weaver to Temple. Who knows

FWIW, I don't think Dwumfour has a Michigan offer yet. It might be tough to have him walk away without an offer, especially if one of your reasons for bringing him on the official is because you want to sway his good friend Rashan Gary. But at least as of now, Dwumfour can't really commit without the offer.

His offer list is pretty stellar as is his highlight video. I'm not sure how he is a 3* across the board...wonder if someone like Magnus can chime in and clue me in to what I'm missing here. Is it level of competition? Height?

I think it might be one of those cases where a kid gets a so-so ranking to begin, and then he just sits there because nobody sees a strong reason to bump him up a lot higher. Height may be an issue (he's listed at 5'11", so he's probably 5'10"), but that only explains why he wouldn't be a 5-star or elite 4-star. He doesn't play against the best competition in Florida, but it's good enough; Orange Park plays Yulee, and Yulee's competition didn't stop Derrick Henry from being a highly touted recruit.

Personally, I was asked a couple months ago which receiver left on the board I would prefer, and McDoom was my top choice. He was above Pie Young, Dylan Crawford, Donald Stewart, etc. He's not as physical as Crawford, but he has speed and vision, and he runs pretty good routes. I would be happy if we could reel him in before anyone else takes another WR spot.

It probably will be - at least from a moderation standpoint, I know the last several here have basically been "a thread a minute" as letters of intent (which no one should ever, EVER sign, but different argument for a different post) have come in for as long as they come in and it gets more than a little maddening. Actually, last year, I admit to giving up and letting the entire morning ride basically. That may have been a mistake in retrosepct.
