Lance Anderson will not leave Stanford for another DC job

Darn. Being reported in several places.

So who else is there?

I just look at his recent defenses...some of the negative baggage he brings...deservedly so or not.

I think if we're hiring the best of the best, we can do better than both. Neither is in my top tier and I think Aranda is better than both Leavitt and Anderson.

But you don't need to give me a resume. I'd say Miles would be the same level as David Shaw in a head coach, but Miles has a resume that shits on Shaw when you look over time.

In fact, I think that's a decent comparison...Miles - Leavitt, Anderson - Shaw...but we all wanted a Harbaugh level coach and that's what we got.

I guess we'll just differ on that.  I think Leavitt is one of the top defensive minds in the game and he still has ties to Florida recruiting, which can't hurt.  I think his baggage has turned a lot of teams off of him, but he's been coaching for decades and only has that one incident to my knowledge.  So I think the baggage is overblown.  Plus he's 58 and probably isn't a realistic HC candidate so he'd be nice to get for some continuity, whereas Aranda would likely be gone in 2-3 years.  Both would be fine choices and I certainly think both are better than Anderson.

So we're just supposed to hire guys who aren't going to move up in their career?

If that's the case...why not just keep Mattison? He's coaches and recruited these guys and knows them better than anyone. And is Leavitt that much better of a candidate than Greg Mattison? His track record and resume is pretty damn good, but no one is beating down the door for him.

Don't think we'd be whining and crying, but it's not like he's head and shoulders above every other candidate and his resume reads pretty damn well. And he's not leaving for a HC gig either.

Good DCs leave to be head coaches...Smart, Muschamp, Durkin, Dantonio, Mason, Narduzzi, I mean...it happens. You find a new one.

Think you're forgetting that guys like Smart and Narduzzi were at their respective schools for like 7 years.  Not the same as Durkin leaving after 1 season (which could potentially cost us some key recruits).  I want Leavitt because he's a highly successful and proven defensive coach, the fact that he's likely to stick around for a while is just an added benefit.  Continuity isn't a bad thing to have.  And yes, he is a much better candidate than Mattison.  He's coached some elite defenses and led his own program to about as much success as that program can reasonably achieve.

Far enough...

Since you can post reasonable answers to back up your opinion (even if I disagree)...

Can you tell me why they wouldn't have announced it by now if it was Leavitt? No one else can seem to put anything together that makes sense.

They can announce it without him starting the job tomorrow, next week or even before the bowl game. In fact, that's what happens with a ton of coaching moves this time of year. Hell, there are guys who've announced they're taking another job and they're still going to coach for their current/former school in the bowl game.

So why hasn't it been announced if it's Leavitt?

Starting to think Pagano as well. The timing suggests an NFL coach as you said and Pagano's ties vis a vie Ravens job makes way too much sense. Several recruits are stoked and this is the most glaring choice based on deduction.

at least not if the rumors are true that Michigan already knows who the next DC is.  As bad as they have played the past two weeks, Indy could still make the playoffs as the AFC South champion.  I can't believe Pagano has told Harbaugh that he's all in for Michigan while his NFL team is still very much in the playoff hunt.

People mentioning pagano...why wouldn't there be nfl DC spots he could contend for? He obviously did a solid job as a NFL DC. Doesn't seem likely that he be in the running for our DC. Someone like Mike Trgovac (GB DL coach, Michigan OL under Bo) may be a candidate as well.

IMO. The reason for the delay in announcing the new DC might be they're waiting for Mattison to retire. They might not want him doing so till after NSD.

The pic for the OP is um...interesting. Obviously Pagano is coming and all the heads of the NFL people at the WWL will explode.

At this point, we're probably running out of obvious candidates but I do agree with some of the folks here in that the longer this goes on, the more likely it could be that the next DC comes out of the NFL ranks, but then you also have to consider that many teams at the college level are either preparing for bowls or trying to assemble / re-assemble staffs themselves, so if it is someone in the college ranks, it could be just as long a wait now. It almost seems like we're going to be in a holding pattern on this hire for a couple weeks at least.

In Harbaugh we trust....  can't wait to find out who thenew DC will be but I am sure Harbaugh will hire a stud.

wouldn't it be more logical to announce it sooner rather than later.  You have to take into account the school he would be leaving and their need to find a replacement.

You don't leave your former school high and dry at the last minute, picking through the leftovers when all the big names are off the board.

Either Harbaugh has an ordered list and was obliged to wait for the dominos to fall - ie: Anderson waiting on BYU, waiting on the Navy season to finish - before going to the next name on the list.

Or it is someone in the NFL, who must wait for their season to finish, before the coaching carrousel lifts off..
