Xavier Simpson goes for 59 points in a single game!

Submitted by MichiganMan14 on
Simpson and Lima Senior beat Fremont Ross Dec. 15 night behind Simpson's school record 59 points. He also dished eight assists in the win. Lima Senior mounted a furious rally to beat Toledo St. John's in the team's Dec. 8 opener. Lima trailed by 17 in the third quarter despite Simpson's outstanding play - he finished with 26 points in a 67-66 win. Looks like we have a gem on the way to Ann Arbor! Getting more and more excited about this kid. He will need to be ready next year and looks like he's well on his way! Lots of minutes to be had. Go Blue!

McGary was going to be good regardless. A 5 star recruited by Duke and other suitors. Sometimes these guys are gems and sometimes they are what they are in plan b or plan c recruits. When we made the national title run we had players like McGary and Glenn Robinson who were 5 stars in addition to the unheralded guys like Hardaway.

Hardaway was a top 100 recruit.  The biggest myth about the national championship team was that it was a bunch of unheralded guys sorrounding McGary.  Every guy was a top 100 recruit in high school including Burke.

The players on that team and their recruiting ranking on espn out of high school:

Trey: 84th

Hardaway: 93rd

GRIII: 18th

Stauskas: 76th

McGary: 27th

Our current starting lineup

Walton: 30th

Levert:  Not in the top 100

Robinson: DIII transfer not even ranked anywhere

Irvin: 22nd

Doyle: Not in the top 100

Notice a difference?  And yes Levert is a good player now and was a hidden gem and Robinson can shoot lights out.  But Robinson is also an absolute liability on defense against anyone with a pulse and so is Doyle.  Those guys aren't highly rated because they don't have elite athleticism and that is reflected in how this team plays defense, which is to say not at all.  Whats Robinson going to do when Indiana puts Yogi Ferrel on him and he can never get open because Ferrel is so much faster than him?

for finding and developing lower ranked guys, we have to also acknowledge some of the higher ranked guys who have not performed close to their rankings, which describes every player you just listed save, perhaps Mo who is still TBD.

When they are starting they will get to be compared too.  I compared starting lineups, the results are speaking for themselves.  Beilein is a great offensive coach and this team will still score. The recruiting struggles are being shown more on the defensive end where anytime Duncan Robinson is on the floor dribble penetration or scrambling shifts are almost guaranteed and Doyle can't stop a single center because he plays defense by sticking his hands straight up and hoping.

I've read this attempt at revisionist history before besides McGary they were mostly under the radar at the time they committed. Just from memory and quick googling. Hardaway Jr.: 3 star unranked on Scout and Rivals. Only major offer Miami(YTM) Most posters wanted Zeigler or Prather. Burke: 3 star #22 ranked PG on Scout and Espn #27 ranked PG and 127 overall on Rivals. Major offer: Penn State. Most expected Carlton Brundidge to be the starter at PG. GRIII: 3 star Scout NR and Rivals 118 overall Offers from Missouri St,IUPUI, Indiana St, and Valpo. No Indana and Purdue offered after he committed. Sir Dominique Pointer was the guy most wanted. Stauskas: 3 star #106 overall Rivals,Espn #32 SF. Offers from Kansas, Stanford, Oklahoma St., Wake, Butler, and Iowa St. Not many blue bloods there. The Kansas offer was thought to be uncommittable until other guys decided. So none of them were the blue chips at signing that they became by the final rankings. Seems like a great job at evalution.

The Lima Senior High School senior guard dropped a school-record 59 points for the Spartans, outscoring the Little Giants by himself, leading his team to a 103-57 win over Ross.

Simpson, who has commited to the University of Michigan, drained 23 field goals, including eight 3-pointers, and hit 5-of-9 free throws to surpass the previous record of 57 points, held by his cousin, Greg.

Can't wait for this kid to get on campus.

Sidenote: The school they were playing is the same HS Charles Woodson attended.

but stupid his coach left him in until like a minute left in the 4th quarter.  Why would you still have him out there to put up this insane number despite killing the team you're playing by like 40?
