MGoFish: Next DC Expected to be a "3-4 Guru" and a Slamdunk Hire

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on

Team Harbaugh is apparently giving some recruits information on who the next DC will be, and I suspect we will be very happy with the decision based on these rumblings:

#Michigan expected to hire a "3-4 guru" as their next defensive coordinator https://t.co/7dN9QAtBZW

Also, MGoFish is hearing positive things about Bush and Walker. While the dude can be over optimistic at times, his sources seem to be fairly solid.

Pagano was DC under Harbaugh's brother in Baltimore and worked with Mattison there.  So he clearly has connections to the staff.

If he's really on his way out in Indy and doesn't want to wait around for a HC job, I think he would fit the bill of being a "home run hire".   But why wouldn't he wait for his own HC job?

Pagano has three straight 11-5 seasons as an NFL coach.  I know Harbaugh is awesome and all, but I think Pagano's resume speaks for itself at this point.  Blaming him for Luck getting hurt this year is pretty silly.

I won't discount him wanting to coach his nephew and possibly get away from the NFL grinder for a year or two though.  I can't imagine he would be more than a very short-term hire.

The way things went in Indy this year I doubt he gets hired in the NFL next year. Now the bigger question is would he drop all the way down to coordinating a college team as opposed to doing the same thing at the NFL level for an NFL salary

Sounds like he's hinting at possible assurances made to UM on Bush/Walker (possibly just Bush)and for some reason they end up going elsewhere that others will pay the price like possibly (Gil, Metellus)

That would be awful. It's not Gil's and Metellus' fault if Bush goes elsewhere. If anything it might be the relationship between Bush Sr. And Harbaugh, but even that feels like a misinterpretation of an offhand comment. Recruiting seems like a long view thing, I can't imagine they'd damage a carefully built relationship with a school over one player.

What would an outside hire do to Partridge? We have too many coaches to let him keep coaching linebackers. Also, I thought I had read that Greg Jackson was wanting the DC job. Would he leave if he doesn't get it?

Just spitballin' here, but what about Mike Pettine as DC?  He's likely done in Cleveland and he seems way more suited to college than the pros, although I don't think he's ever coached college.  He's also a defensive guy, although you wouldn't know it from watching Cleveland.  Don't know what I'm getting at, but if Pagano is an option, it would seem Pettine is in the same vein.
