Submitted by Moe on

Does this mean good news on the Jaylen Brown front?

sorry if this was talked about earlier and I missed it but to add fuel to the Brown fire, check out Bacari's tweet from earlier (sorry I don't know how to embed)

For those of you who don't want to click the link, the tweet reads...

"So excited to see all the great recruits coming into the B1G Conference. We are the best Men's Basketball Conference in the Country! #B1G"

Normally one does not bank scholarships but with a very young roster next year I would be very content with Beilein not reaching for a 2 star (who yes he has had luck with) and use this scholarship that is open for a 2016 PG if Brown doesnt work out.

Even without Brown, we have a glut of players who can contribute next season and it doesn't make much sense to take a risk on a low-ranked prospect (even my utmost respect for Coach B's eye for talent notwithstanding) when there are so many excellent 2016 prospects who are uncommitted.  (Sorry for the run on sentence, as it's something I have had a lifelong battle with despite being educated at the University of Michigan and knowing full well how annoying it is, so I hope that no one here is put off by this post.

To me this indicates that Beilein has confidence that Jaylen Brown is coming our way.  Anything can happen in recruiting, but it is looking very good for us.

This is reminiscent of the Harbaugh craziness that went on... the tea leaves are point in our favor. Austin Hatch getting the medical scholarship and Williams dropping out after he appeared to have a really high interest. I am guessing there is a chance that Brown just wants to wait until his senior year of high school is over  (I don't know when that is) to make the decision so he can have some space to himself.

I know the tradition around here is to be cynical and pessimistic, but it's getting hard not to feel a little hopeful about all this. The events of this week taken independently wouldn't mean all that much, but taken together could present a narrative. Time will tell!

My first thought was that this means that the coaches either told him that they had no scholarships remaining or that things just fell apart. Though I doubt that the latter is true because Williams just scheduled a visit.

If this is Beilein's doing, then it is an extremely positive indicator.

If this is the kid's doing, then we just don't know. There are plenty of reasons why he would choose UVa or UNC over Michigan on the merits (distance from home, path to playing time, personal perception of prestige, etc.). Hell, he could have been asked to visit in late May to allow for Brown's decision to shake out, and perhaps he bristled at being a second fiddle.

That said... it's happening?

The other one was a Kansas guy picking Kansas. And the most recent Crystal Ball to Kentucky was from Alex Bozich from Inside The Hall - Indiana blogger and homer of all homers. Of the 20 straight Crystal Balls to Michigan, guess how many are Michigan guys? Just one. Jason Rubinstein from 247. I'm still pretty optimistic.
