Hello: Wayne Lyons, Transfer DB Comment Count

Brian

This has been the worst-kept secret in Michigan football for a month or two now, but I think this from Rivals is the first official confirmation that Michigan is indeed bringing in Stanford defensive back Wayne Lyons as a graduate transfer this fall:

Lyons confirmed his plans to transfer to Michigan.

"Midterms have my attention, but yes, there is some truth to the rumors," Lyons said via text Feb. 9, adding he planned to report June after graduation. "I'm looking into taking a visit before then."

I'm going to ignore the "some truth" bit since everyone's been discussing it sotto voce for a month and his mom got hired and he's planning to report in June.

Lyons was a touted recruit out of Fort Lauderdale, a top 100 player on the composite and the #4 safety in the country. He broke his foot two games into his freshman year and has been a contributor since as a cornerback. He moved into the starting lineup as a junior, finishing fifth on the team in tackles and picking off Notre Dame twice. He was less involved last year, and Stanford fans are kind of eh about him:

He's a decent corner. I've heard that he'd be better as a safety (or maybe nickel corner, which is how we used him a lot this year), and supposedly we wanted to move him that way.

I think the consensus would be that he never quite played up to his expectations, but I'd be sad to see him go.

With Jabrill Peppers moving to safety, Michigan has more of a need at corner. Michigan lost Raymon Taylor and returns Blake Countess and Jourdan Lewis; there is an opportunity to be a nickel corner or to beat out Countess, who had a shaky junior year.

Michigan's walk-on situation makes it difficult to determine exactly how many scholarships are available. Lyons's arrival would hypothetically deprive Kerridge or maybe Kenny Allen of a scholarship, but in all likelihood someone leaves before September. In practice, it's moot. FYI: Michigan has filled 16 slots with their recruiting class and the transfers of O'Korn and Lyons, which is approximately the number they had to give.

UPDATE: there's an excellent diary from alum96 with more background on Lyons. It doesn't sound like he's a world-beater, but sometimes kids get a lot better as seniors. And the alternative here is leaving a scholarship open.

the real value of Wayne Lyons will be senior leadership.  This Def Backfiled has plentyof potential.  I just believe Wayne can be a steadying influence both on the field and in the locker room, he can be a "coach" on the field. I believe those intangibles are missing from this team, I beleive those intangibles will be what he brings. Besides why else would he bring a mediocre (as in probably better than some of our guys)  5th year player on board instead of a stand-out or recruit a high rated freshman

So I'm really not so caught up in how great or mediocre the transfer is.  He seems like he will bring something Hokes' teams lacked except for the '11 Sugar Bowl team.

I know very little about recruiting regulations... is there any way this could be viewed negatively by the ncaa? I know MSU fans are getting all butt hurt and accusing us of "buying recruits"

No, he started 7 games his SR year.  I think he was a starter every game in 2013 as a JR.  His stats indicate that.  He just never got past a certain point  and leveled off.  Like a lot of players including quite a few of ours.

Aside from that, it would be a very strange way to cheat. There's nothing secretive about the hiring of his mother. At the time, he was considered a possible transfer only because he lost his starting job. It wasn't clear if we would even have room for him, but this was considered his most likely destination even without involving his mother. In other words, what we stand to gain from hiring his mother is almost entirely what she will personally contribute to the program.

I got this from my son, who is a classmate of his at Stanford:

Yeah, Wayne is a cool guy! Met him freshman year. He was pretty highly touted coming out of high school and just never fully materialized as a player. I think he's a solid dude who has plenty of experience (I think he's a 3 year starter maybe?), so that should help the young guys in the Michigan secondary (like Jabrill).

Here are his college stats:

He's an architectural design major, which I think was Luck's major too. So, he knows the angles!

I think he'll fit right in and be a solid, steadying influence in the secondary. He probably has good leadership and teaching skills too.
