BR: QB Easton Bruere

I don't normally do Bleacher Report , but this came up in my feed, and I thought it was interesting since it also talks about Zach Gentry.

Evidently, this kid is a 2015 6'3", 200lbs QB that three for 4500 yards, 49 TDs and 6 INTs this season - which is pretty indicative of his body of work as a starter - the season wasn't an aberration. Kid has a 4.0 this year and a 3.75 Cumulative.

However, he has zero scholarship offers.

I recall in the comments on Zach Gentry's film, some of the gurus here were saying that the competition was ummm.... not so good at football. Is that the only thing keeping colleges away here? I know it's late and if you're poorly exposed, a lot of schools are filled up, but I have a hard time believing some school wouldn't carry an extra QB with his measurables and performance.

I'm wondering if someone who follows recruiting closely knows something the BR report isn't sharing? It sounds like he hit the camps, so even though he plays in NM, he should be well scouted. Is there a hitch in his game?

I could always sling a football. Not to go "uncle rico" but distance and the velocity that made friends/teammates ask me to "not throw so hard". I broke my share of friends fingers. I'd almost bet that I can throw a football as fast and far as a baseball. Something about the motion, completely palming it, it being perfectly round, etc. I can't throw a baseball for crap. Give me a football and it just comes natural to me, distance, accuracy & velocity. I think it's my unusual length of arm:body size ratio. I'm not a big guy so it always stuns peopke when they see how easy it is for me to throw a ball 50+yds. No strain, no multiple steps or run up, just fling. I can go 25-30 on a rope. Baseball? It's a joke! No accuracy, not very fast. I guess distance isn't so bad but I load a lot more air under it than I need with a football. Again, I think it's the grip, motion, muscles used and other things. My HS best friend was the same way! We'd stand endzone-50 yard line and just launch all day long. Neither of us could pitch a bb for crap. My older Brother is the opposite. Shorter arms & about 5-8. Can pitch his butt off! Could throw heat, curves, etc in Jr HS. A football? Nope. Duck city ha.

Steve in PA is likely not correct. One of my teammates at NU had D1 scholarship offers to play QB and chose baseball instead. I watched him fire footballs 65-70 yards on a weekly basis but pitching off a mound he was around 81 mph maybe 83 mph at best. He was also 6'3" and about 180-190lbs. My theory is not only are pitching arm motions and football arm motions completely different, but learning how to get velocity off a mound is different than stepping up in the pocket. Also, you don't know what kind of shape his arm was in the day it was radared. Maybe he's routinely 86 mph or higher but was overused or had a different injury he was compensating for.

I work at a D2 school and most of our pitchers throw in the 80s. You can be a great D2 pitcher and top out in the 80s. Obviously you need more than a fastball. We had one guy last year who threw a one-hitter complete game and threw 115 fastballs in 118 pitches. He was throwing harder than 80s.

I'm surprised nobody in the MAC / C-USA / MWC / SBC has offered him.  His stats are off the charts.  I know his competition was poor and he needs better arm strength but good coaching can make up for a ton.

This kid should be recruited.  Period.  If he fizzles out, so be it, but he at least deserves a shot.

It seemed to gloss over a lot of reasons why he may not be looked at. I knew guys in my high school who scored 30 ppg as a basketball player and they went to play DIII. Why? Because the competition was awful and they didn't have the skills set to leap to DI ball.

I have to imagine it's similar here. BR makes it sound like those mean schools teased him and are just missing the boat. I'm sure it's because all of these schools (which literally analyze high school players' abilities for a living) looked at his tape and decided he wasn't DI caliber. Just because you put up nice stats in HS doesn't mean you'll be a decent DI starter. I think this is largely a non-story

Players are not recruited for their past performance.  They are recruited for their potential.

It's like the saying, "past performance is not a guarantee of future results".  JaMarcus Russell, Tim Tebow, Trent Richardson, etc are prime examples of past performance not translating into future results..
