Just a few days ago it was "OMG! WHAT ARE WE DOING!?" Because we hadn't fired Hoke. It mean it was a full Will Ferrell freakout on here after Nebraska fired Pelini and we still had Hoke. Then SMU hired Chad Morris and it was like, "that's it, I'm done!"

lol.

People were saying they would never watch Michigan again if Hoke kept his job.

I mean it was nuts when you actually go back and think about it.

Now Hoke is gone and we're ready for this search to be over? Ha, that didn't take long at all. What, 2 days and we're done? "Nope. This whole speculation thing - ain't for me. Hire someone and bring me closure."

Fandom - it's a funny thing!

This is why I've been saying...everyone just relax. Role with Hoke for a couple more weeks. No harm whatsoever.

You hold the speculation and media attention at bay.

You get more data - more information. For example, we all know Harbaugh is gone. But if their playoff picture clears up and they're OUT. We may be able to lure him away before the NFL season even ends. So you could get lucky in that regard.

(obviously that was a hypothetical and there's nothing that says we're getting Harbaugh anyway)

By waiting you shorten the period you're without a coach. And with Harbaugh, Harbaugh, Miles, Mullen and Stoops as the general concensus top 5. You may have 4-5 coaches who would think about coming to Michigan, but first they want to finish their seasons before moving on. Waiting a couple more weeks with Hoke shortens that time period.

I'm not suggesting we shouldn't have fired Hoke, hell no. I'm not suggesting that we shouldn't have fired him when we did.

I'm just sharing why I think we now have to be patient and what the benefits would've been had we kept Hoke for a couple more weeks. The only downside was fan insanity, negativity and the uneasiness. But all that would've gone away if the end result would've been Jim Harbaugh.

I hope we get who we want, and soon, but it just doesn't look like this is going to be a quick process. So in a weeks everyone is going to be talking about how Florida filled their position right after the season and Nebraska did the same thing. And it will be code red freakout all over again. "Day 17: CC continues..."

I have to say that, if I am McElwain, sometime in the near future I would endeavor to get an agent that would take the very notion of a $7.5 million buyout and set it ablaze in front of an athletic director rather than agree to such a thing without flinching. All the same, interesting hire for Florida.

Part of agreeing to that buyout was getting a ton of incentives. I believe he would have gotten an extra million if he ended up in the top 25 this year (something like that).  He could have made a lot of money for a MW coach given the tragectory he was on. Not as much as the Florida coach though.

I guess I'm out of the loop, but why is everyone so down on this guy?  I mean, yes, probably a good chunk of his success this year was due to Dee Hart, but unless I'm wrong there is no evidence that he is a bad coach, and he very well might be a great coach.  He has had success at a place that has had precious little of it recently, and saying that this is all due to Dee Hart seems like a pretty lazy assertion.

Although, I think his contract is evidence that he is a terrible negotiator.  Why would you ever sign such a ridiculous contract?  He must have really, really wanted to escape Saban.

Brilliant analysis of two coaching records.

A guy who reached ten wins in three years (4-8, 8-6, and 10-2) and was OC at Alabama for four years, going 48-6 and helping Saban win two NCs is just like a guy who went 4-8, 2-9, 4-7, 5-7, 7-6, and 12-2, on top of never having spent one minute as a coordinator on either side of the ball at any level.

His pre-HC resume is far more impressive than Hoke's.  He then showed that he could handle head coaching duties.  It may not be a resume that generally would get you in at one of the top 10 jobs in the country.  But it certainly would have earned him a shot at upper tier P5 jobs even in a deeper coaching search pool.

He's obviously no gurantee to be good, but nobody is.  And programs as good as Florida have certainly taken guys with less impressive resumes.

I'm not sure.  Aside from Mullen apparently never being in the picture, and unless they never even kicked the tires on guys thought to be unattainable, this seems like a process resulting in a fine hiring.  You can't tell me he's any worse a bet to succeed than any other guy they could have gone after.

I actually give props to Florida for getting their hire done quickly. It seems he was one of their top, if not #1 candidate.

I think that's going to prove to be a good pick-up. Not a home-run hire, per se, but that might not be what they need. Wasn't too long ago that recruits have to try and remember his offenses tearing up the SEC with the likes of Trent Richardson and Julio Jones.

As long as he can get a competent DC, I think Florida will be in business in a year or so.

Pretty good hire for them IMO. Florida had success previously with offensive minded coaches (Spurrier/Meyer), then switched gears to a defensive minded coach (Muschamp), and is back to an offensive minded guy.

He won 2 NCs with 2 different 1st year starting QBs and put up 500 yards of total offense on the #1 defense in 2009. He's more of a pro-style guy but puts up spread type numbers.

Why cant Michigan do what they did and park at their guys house and get the deal done? We have to have all these BS firms, committees and swim lanes. Just go get the deal done.
