That is interesting. I think he is a great defensive coach. I thought given how bad the QB situation has been, he would be gone after this year.

The only thing i see out of teams like these is how much a difference a good QB and a good OL makes
October 4th, 2014 at 3:49 PM ^
I don't believe in the supernatural, but at this point any coach who can actually win a major conference football game seems like a god to me.
October 4th, 2014 at 4:29 PM ^
He has an excellent pedigree and looks as if he's gotten it figured out now, what with beating LSU on the road last week and absolutely thumping the Aggies today. I think that, if we cannot land a Harbaugh, then Michigan would be making a very big mistake in not at least taking a good, long look at Mr. Mullen.

Florida has speed. They have no offensive skill.

when have we ever been patient. If Mullen wants the job then he better be prepared to win and win big in his first three years here. We ran RR out after 3, and the only reason Hoke is going to make it 4 is because of his Sugar Bowl win. There's no chance in hell the fanbase gives him the time to patience to assemble a team, unless he can do it extremely quickly

You act like it's different here vs any other school in the country with high expectations. It would be exactly the same at USC, Ohio State, Texas, Florida, etc.
October 4th, 2014 at 3:56 PM ^
those other school's have high expectations, but they are also able to attract top-notch candidates. With our infighting and "Michigan Man" crap we've seen the past 7 years, I don't think it's realisitic to expect us to pull a high quality coach from a Power-5 conference. We're gonna have to go the Jim Tressel route and give someone their first opportunity at coaching in the big leagues so that they can look past dealing with all the extra bs that comes along with being our HC.

If the athletic department is cleaned out and everyone shuts the fuck up for a while we can get whoever we want.

It's Mississippi State...they've won the SEC ONCE and that was in the 1960s. He's going to have them in the top 10.

This is a GREAT POINT. It has taken Mullen 6 years to get to this point. Congrats to him - until this year he has not had a real big win. Now he has 2 in 2 weeks. That was the knock on him.
But will UM fans wait 6 years for that? No they wont. And if you thin UM is loaded with talent you are just wrong. UM had same ranked classes (slightly worse) with late Carr and early RR and Mullen's MSU destroyed Rich Rod like it was Purdue.
UM loses its 3 best players this year - Funchess (90% chance) Ryan and Clark. It has no viable QB for 2015 at this time. And no OL who stands out. And no WR to take Funchess/Gallon role. It is not that talented of a team, it just isnt.
Peppers Henry Bolden Glasgow and Lewis are probably going to be the top 5 players on next years team. That is said with a lot of hope about Lewis and peppers who have 1.5 great games between them. Its' going to be a mess next year too. And if it takes Mullen 4+ years to build a great team he might not get that here .
October 4th, 2014 at 3:57 PM ^
I don't believe that for a second. The talent is there. It just needs to be coached up. Hence why Malzahn was able to take a 3-9 team and take them to 12-2 in a year.

I dont follow Auburn that closely but let's make a gentlemen's bet on Auburn v UM NFL draft choices over the next 4 years. I bet it is 2:1 Auburn v UM.
I dont see a lot of NFL talent on next year's roster, especially on offense. I dont see many players who would start on a the top 6 teams in the SEC in 2015.

"Probably the Big Ten’s biggest obstacle is that its members’ states do not produce top football players the way they used to. It is no coincidence that the Big Ten had postwar glory years, when the Midwest thrived on the back of the auto industry. The Rust Belt and the decline of Big Ten football are not unrelated.
Today, Texas and Florida each produce more than twice as many Division I football players as Ohio does, per Scout. com. In the last three classes, according to ESPN, the Big Ten’s 11 states produced six five-star recruits. Florida alone produced 11.
Josh Helmholdt, who covers Midwest recruiting for Rivals.com, said: “I always hear that a four-star in the Midwest is not as good as a four-star in Florida. That’s wrong. They’re every bit as good. The Midwest just doesn’t have enough of them.”
An instructive comparison are the states of Michigan and Georgia. In 1960, Michigan had twice Georgia’s population; in 1990, it was nearly one and a half times as big; today, their populations are roughly equivalent. Over the past eight years, according to Scout.com, the state of Georgia has averaged 169.3 recruits per year to Michigan’s 64.1.
In the last three N.F.L. drafts, 51 players from Georgia were selected, while only 16 from Michigan were. In the first rounds of those drafts, the SEC had 33 players selected; the Big Ten nine."

Yes but its more specific than that. We are recruiting essentially at the same level as OSU and way ahead of MSU. You can see explosivve players on their teams. Funchess stands out of course on our team. Ryan from 2 years ago was that kind of player.
You see Shazier last year, Spence, Hyde, their entire OL last year at OSU. Bosa this year, etc
MSU had Dennard last year, this year they have Cook Calhoun Waynes Drummond etc
So there are players to be had. I just dont see the explosive players out there. Once this current group goes I see Henry, Butt, and then a lot of hope. Bolden might be a 6th round type. Then you start talking about freshman and RS freshman types which every fanbase thinks are full of studs. Where are all these explosive guys?
On the Les Miles thread I looked at NFL 1st thru 4th rounders on UM vs LSU since 2009. We had 6 - these are Lewan, Schofield, Graham, Martin, types. LSU had 26.
I am sure OSU had 15-20 at least in that time.
I dont see these players on UM right now, and I think people are overvaluing how much talent is on this team. There is not a secondary WR who looks to be headed to the NFL, neither of the RBs look like it, none of the OL. none of the QBs. That leaves Jake Butt.
October 4th, 2014 at 6:56 PM ^
I agree totally, but if the basic talent is not there, it means our recruiting classes are way overvalued. If that's the case, then plenty of other programs were overvaluing the same kids, since most of our "best" recruits had plenty of offers from other decent programs.
I think it's a combination of overrated recruits and horrible coaching/development.

In terms of talent, I would say that Michigan is in a better position relative to the Big Ten than Mississippi St. is relative to the SEC.

Do you realize where Mississippi State rates in the SEC world? That would be like blaming a guy for not being immediately successful at Indiana. MSU is to the SEC what Indiana is to the Big Ten.

Upset alert as said in OP. It's one of those games with a good enough team and Oklahoma is on the road for non glamour game.

He's winning now (not a long enough track record), but doesn't mean he will win here. Remember RR was "hot stuff" when he got here, but cooled off right away. I"m afraid we'd have another RR-type fiasco.
