Evening Games Open Thread
I'm not going to lie, I started this thread merely because I want to talk about the hilarity of the fact that we're about to watch Rutgers play their first B1G game.
Biggest night for Rutgers football since they won their last National Championship... In 1869?

Didn't we make fun of him for turning purple in 2011? I guess winning cures everything...

Last week v BYU Texas OL had a combined 5 starts between them. So today its 10. Their offense is going to be in trouble all year.
September 13th, 2014 at 9:26 PM ^
Great angled punt by PSU. Nice to see some teams coached how to do those things.
September 13th, 2014 at 9:32 PM ^
What happened to Hundley for UCLA? Neuhiesel is in there playing QB now. And how overated was UCLA. Their offense, led by an "NFL First Rounder", can't score at all.

Thanks.

In a just universe neither of these teams would be in the Big Ten.
September 13th, 2014 at 9:36 PM ^
Tennessee just got fucked on a non-fumble call. That's the reason you need the road team to have its conference's officials do the game.
September 13th, 2014 at 9:43 PM ^
I belive the announcers said there are SEC refs in Norman.
September 13th, 2014 at 9:47 PM ^
Hmm, I could've sworn I heard them say the replay officials were Big XII.
September 13th, 2014 at 9:57 PM ^
Guys, LSU was only up 10 - 0 on UL Monroe at half-time, and is only up 31 - 0 now!! FIRE MILES!!! They have the most terrible staff in history!! They must totally suck and not be able to develop players!! Rabble rabble! Incompetent! Only 361 yds of offense!? Unacceptable! FIRE MILES!! NOW!!!
September 13th, 2014 at 10:05 PM ^
Has Hoke won a national title and played for a second?
September 13th, 2014 at 10:21 PM ^
Then by your logic shouldn't that make it all the more worrisome given that Miles has and isn't demolishing a much lesser opponent right out the gate?
Not arguing for Hoke, simply pointing out how insane our fanbase is because they think other programs, with arguably superior talent and coaching, couldn't possibly struggle like we do. Lo and behold, a program with exactly that, playing at home against a vastly inferior opponent, didn't blow them out of the water to the tune of 600yds of offense and 70+ points. While Hoke hasn't done himself any favors lately, the UM fanbase is just ridiculous right now.
September 13th, 2014 at 10:34 PM ^
The difference is...we constantly struggle with inferior opponents.
September 13th, 2014 at 11:14 PM ^
Far too often, yes, but too many people try to make it out like it's isolated to just Hoke and Michigan and no truly good program ever struggles with lesser opponents. Not true.

Of course, Hazel did not have them ready to play CMU. Football is just weird sometimes.
September 13th, 2014 at 9:55 PM ^
So I heard UCLA won the toss and defered and the Texas guys didn't know the rules so they chose to kick in the first half...ouch.
September 13th, 2014 at 10:37 PM ^
say that you can make your choice to kick or receive. It may not be strategically a good thing to do what Texas did, but they were within the rules, and the refs have to accept what they said since it is legal to ask to kick if the other team deferred. To whit:
ARTICLE 1. a. Each half shall start with a kickoff.
b. Three minutes before the scheduled starting time, the referee shall toss a
coin at midfield in the presence of not more than four field captains from
each team and another game official, first designating the field captain of the
visiting team to call the coin toss. Before the second half, the referee will
obtain the teams’ second-half options.
c. During the coin toss, each team shall remain in the area between the nineyard
marks and its sideline or in the team area. The coin toss begins when
the field captains leave the nine-yard marks and ends when the captains
return to the nine-yard marks.
PENALTY—Five yards from the succeeding spot [S19].
d. The winner of the toss shall choose one of the following options:
1. To designate which team shall kick off.
2. To designate which goal line his team shall defend.
3. To defer his selection to the second half.
e. The opponent shall then choose option 1 or 2 above, as available.
f. If the winner of the toss chooses option 3 above, then after the opponent’s
choice the winner selects the available option (1 or 2 above).
g. For the second half the loser of the toss, or the winner who chooses option
3 above, shall choose option 1 or 2 above. The opponent then chooses the
remaining available option.
If you win the coin toss, you *are* allowed to choose to kick in the first half. You could also choose to defend a certain end (if the weather were crazy, perhaps - seen every now and then in coin flips before overtime if there is heavy wind). You could choose to receive in the first half. All are options. The last option is to defer your ability to get first pick to the 2nd half, and then, you don't have to make your choice among all these options (kick, receive, choose an end to defend) until right before the 2nd half starts. If you think your defense is going to score more than your offense, choose to kick.
The key is that defer does not mean you are necessarily choosing to receive to start the 2nd half; it's just what happens most of the time.
Now, if the coach told the captains what to do and they said kick instead of receive - oops.

I know its the rules. Obviously it's a bad decision though. The ref even asked if it was his final answer.

lol Purdue has 3 sacks on Gholson, and is making ND look even worse than we looked today..

NBC AND BIG TEN. What strikes me about Gholson is that he keeps his eyes downfield and makes plays happen with his eyes along with his legs. Gardner has regressed in that category. Now on the B1G, Rutgers looks like it will be a tough place for teams to play.

Last couple of plays have really showed some of the issues in playmaking ability of the ND safeties and linebackers

Rutgers has a great pass rush and putting huge pressure on Hackenburg.
Our OL is going to have its hands full.

The PSU-Rutgers game is sloppy. But as i'm sitting here watching this, i was thinking about the Penn St program. Does it make anyone else miserable to think that Penn St had a nuclear bomb dropped on their program, yet still had better results during sanctions and will probably be better going forward seeing as now they can be bowl eligible immediately and will start getting scholoarships back next year??? Bill O'Brien did a good job and all, but damn that is depressing. It really is all about coaching.

I think he'll have a great career at Michigan.

September 13th, 2014 at 10:22 PM ^
defense looks so fast, their dline is so quick and really pressures the qb. so much faster d than ours...
September 13th, 2014 at 10:27 PM ^
...because the B1G sucks.
But yes, we're FAR from being elite.
I said it before the season started...it wouldn't shock me if we went 12-1 and fell into the CFB playoff...and then lost by 35 points to the #1 seed. Again, not predicting that. Just saying, the B1G is THAT bad. I could totally see us winning a bunch of ugly games like much of today was. Then playing a real team and get the doors blown off like ND when they played Bama a few years ago. Then again, it wouldn't shock me if this team was 6-6 either.
