OT: Saturday World Cup Open Thread
Knockout Round kicks off today. No more of that group nonsense, win or go home at this point.
All South American battles today. Winners will meet in the quarterfinals on July 4th.
12:00 PM EDT - Brazil vs. Chile (ABC)
4:00 PM EDT - Colombia vs. Uruguay (ABC)
This Chile team impresses.
Chile should've scored that chance in the first half. They look the better side heading into extra time.
I like their unis. Should be more of what the USA's look like and less of Russia.
Throw in a couple of stripes on the shirts and a few stars on the pants and you have a classic look that you don't have to keep changing, ala Brazil and Argentina.
Sanchez needs some longer shorts
He and Fred are trying to bring back 70-80s era soccer. I'm fine with the 2010s
Where is the yellow card for that?
ESPN radio is making it sound like Chile is outplaying Brazil. Is that accurate?
No, both teams have had good chances to lead. Brazil has looked a bit lacklustre, but it has been fairly even play between the two.
Brazil better 1st half, Chile 2nd half. Chile is now in "turtle" formation in OT to go to PKs. I disagree with this, as they were taking the game to Brazil of late but they could be tired.
"He's always falling oveeer." lol
Really does seem like Chile is pulling back aggression. Hate that strategy and just the idea of using shootouts in this big of a tournament.
things
Not a yellow nor a foul. Chile need to sneak in a goal before PKs. They look exhausted.
Game sounds chippy
They could continue to weather the storm, but they are REALLY dancing with the devil if that's all they have to strategize with.
It doesn't seem as if Chile has great depth. Losing Vidal was crucial. He and Sanchez are irreplaceable and central to their style of play. If you know you can't win on the open field, you take your chances with penalties, in which anything can happen. Do these Brazilian players have the nerves to make all of their penalties?
Chile certainly has the advantage in goal if it goes to PKs
This game has really declined in quality.
Chile has no legs
Can you imagine this game being played in Qatar? Someone would literally have died at this point.
Eh, what's one more? Just throw them on the pile of migrant workers who can't leave the country...
Oh come on! It was only 113 degrees in Qatar today!
/s
DANMN!!!!
2 inches lower, the entire country of Brazil would have just imploded.
Such crap. This game should be over.
Chile so unlucky there.
Chile's one opportunity in extra time hits the bar. Would have been a dagger in the heart.
its a best of 5, so not necessarily 5 shots each. If one team has a 3-0 lead for example its over.
If tied after 5, its sudden death
I'm no expert, but Chile's goalkeeper has looked slightly the better of the two to me.
It would be great to see the upset, but in a strange way I'd sympathize with the Brazilians whose government spent billions to do this World Cup (instead of on its citizens) only to see them drop out early
I hate when one team outplays the otehr all game and then loses in PKs... but in this case either team has a claim to win so I am ok either way.
Such a dumb way to determine the winner at this level of competition.
It is, but no good options in this sport. Players are exhausted.
I'd try the hockey scenario where you take one player off the pitch in OT ... maybe in the 2nd 15 minutes. Maybe open the field up more.
THis is the amazing thing about hockey - how they play those 3-4-5 OT games in playoffs is beyond me. But at least the hockey players get a rest every 40-55 seconds. 80% of these players on the field have not had a rest.
Absolutely agree. I think you widen it up a bit and I think if there aren't penalties to play for you get people taking more chances.
Also allow 2 subs in OT?
Take 2 players off and allow 2 subs per period. That will get things moving around. Get that sucker over with.
I think playing extra time with 8-9 men makes a hell of a lot more sense than PKs for soccer. That would create a lot more scoring chances. Someone would almost certainly score at this level.
Doing PKs at this level is just a coin flip basically as the goalie has to just guess.
When guys are rolling around flopping or a few guys can rest when the ball is at the other end of the field depending on what position they play.
It's not shifts like hockey.
But it's not like no one ever stops moving.
not incredible.
2-2! lots of misses
Very, very unfortunate for Chile. You just knew they would miss that last kick. Lucky Brazil
