Reporter: Glenn Robinson To Enter Draft Comment Count

Brian

This is the report the reporter is reporting:

If you're wondering why this guy would get it first, the signed with an agent bit is the gateway there. Fischer writes for SLAM and the Boston Globe, FWIW.

Man. I know nothing, of course, but coming out in THIS draft after two moderately successful (for individual stats) years...

Hopefully he'll go in the first round. No more Manny/Darius bizness.

good for him.

I will say that it is a shame he never really got to play the 3 here and he should perform well in the league.

Good for him because he's earned it. He isn't nowhere near topping out and will have all the time in the world to develop his weaknesses. I'll bet he goes to the combine and team workouts and kills it. His stock is going to go up and he'll get drafted in the mid to late first round ala THJ last year. Best of luck to GR3!

Thanks, Glenn.  It was fun.  I wish we could've had you for one more year.

Now, on to business.   LIke THJ, the pre-draft workouts will make or break his status.   Fingers crossed that he can perform at a high enough level to warrant a 1st round pick, especially with all of the early entrants rushing to the NBA draft door.

Obviously, I'd be happier if he stayed, but I can't blame him. If it really looks like he'll get a decent guaranteed contract, then you have to weigh the possible improvement (and higher draft position) next vs the possibility of serious injury.

The ironic thing about McGary is that while he may come back because of the injury, he also may be a cautionary tale that leads more outstanding Michigan players leaving early.

Great kid-Great Talent.  I will be rooting for him. After seeing what the third year did for Hardaway I was hoping that he would stick around but if he goes even late first round I do not blame the kid in the slightest.

I have to disagree with those of you saying he should have stayed.  As a Michigan fan, I would have loved to have seen him back, but he's the type of player that's going to be a better pro than college player in my opinion.  He'll thrive with the more wide open game and more opportunities to showcase his athleticism.

I'll believe it when I see him say it at a press conference. Either way, I wish him the best of luck and thank him for the memories. Some of his alley oops are imprinted on my brain forever!

As much as I would like for him to return, I wish him luck. I don't however believe it's in his best interest. like everyone else had said, he's way to inconsistent. He should look at others who have left early from Michigan. All the "should of returned for another year" players aren't doing the best. Manny Harris and Darius Morris have both been travelers to and from the D league. I think he'll end up just like them unfortunately. Talent that needs to develop in college, not in the league. Burke was a Pro, we knew that. Stauskus can shoot the ball consistently, do he'll be exactly that. GR3 is just another athlete trying to make the transition. You would think his dad would give that same advice.

GR3 isn't ready and its a bad move we dont know what info he got back. This doesn't sound like he rushed his discussion. Also if he's not ready its not like he can't develop in the D league. Its not like he can't afford to go back to school if basketball doesn't work out.

Good luck to him. it would have been great if he stuck around another year, but I don't blame him for wanting to leave and give it a go at the NBA.

Think he is a kid who will wow in draft workouts and will move to back end of first round IMO.

I am not of the belief that a guy gets better development in college than pros BUT he seemed perfect to be a guy who skyrocketed to the 10-14 spot in 2015's weak draft and thus make enough money to offset the loss of this year's wages.  Think GR3 sort of had the easiest decision of the 3 to come back - Nik's draft stock is very high and Mitch has a major risk if he comes back if he gets injured again.  GR3 was in the spot THJ was after sophomore year so I thought of the 3 had the clearest path to rocketing up draft boards in a year.  (Mitch if he stayed healthy would too)

That said, with Horford gone it was looking like a lot more time at 4 again, even with Mitch back.  Donnal is not playing 30 minutes a night like most people here wish - he will be a freshman in the Big 10 who refs love to his tacky fouls on, on the defensive end, so GR3 probably saw a lot of 4 in his future again.

But Deshawn Sims hasn't been able to crack a regular season roster. I can't think of a single thing GR3 can do better than Deshawn. He could've cashed in last year, but without some development(and without a guaranteed contract) he is at a great risk of washing out and ending up in Europe.

People always rave about GR3's "athleticism" but really the only thing he does well is jump (IMO). He's not quick at all with the basketball. Maybe he's quick without it, but he wasn't exactly blowing by people on the wing. He can jump out of the gym, but so can a lot of other 6'6"ish guys in college. I still love the guy for coming to Michigan, but I see him as being a riskier pick than other recent Wolverines -- Morris, Harris, Stauskas, McGary. I'd draft LeVert before I took GR3.

I hope he gets drafted in the 1st else he loses at least $3M guaranteed. If bielfeldt can develop his 3 pt shot, we wont miss GRlll much. I expect max and zak to replace him. Depth is thin tho.

Glenn and the team.  He wasn't going to be much more effective next year.  He is an average spot up shooter who is below average with the ball in his hands.  I don't think Beilein was ever going to run the offense through him, and frankly, I don't think we want him too.  I hope he thrives in the NBA because he seems like a quality person and great teammate, but his production can easily be assumed by the collective efforts of those who remain.

Beilein's guys will consistently succeed in the NBA because they'll enter the league with a good head on their shoulders in terms of work ethic and Offensive IQ. Hardaway is having first year success because he has a pro mentality, works hard and plays for the team. GR-3 might not have as impactful a rookie year as Hardaway, but I expect him to be a successful pro for 5+ years

I would like to know what his NBA grade is, because he seems like a fringe 1st-rounder and (honestly) I think Hardaway was the better pro prospect and he had a grade in the 2nd round (if I remember) last year.  Obviously it worked out for him, but just wondering.

Agreed.  I think he needs another year.

To his credit, he started to come on strong at the end of the year.

Wish him the best either way.

I would rather be wrong like my prediction Borges would fail as an Ocoordinator at Mich. In my opinion unless Robinson fixes major facets of his game he will have problems.  In my opinion the only position he can play in the NBA is shooting guard.  In order to play the 2 one must have a jumper unless you do something else amazing.  Many NBA 3's are just as big and physical as the people Robinson guarded as a 4 in college except they are fast.  At this stage of his career Robinson would be a massive liability on defense as an NBA forward.  Any forward with a post game would kill him.  Conversly the lack of an outside shot will mean defenders can lay off.  However, instead of conceding a 21 foot jumper that Robinson still could hit only 27% of the time they will concede a 24 foot jumper as the defenders will be more capable then in college.

If Robinson magically comes up with a jump shot then I think he has the skill set to be a decent NBA player.  Without one he will just be just another Stevie Thompson clone who can jump & finish, but do little else.

I wish him well, but this was not a good decision. If he is picked in the second round, which is likely, he will be losing money compared to staying one more year and playing his way into the middle first round.
