Philip DeFranco targets NCAA, abusive coaches (& Urbz)

Submitted by Bluegriz on January 8th, 2019 at 8:59 PM

Philip DeFranco receives between 20-40 Million views per month of his daily show on YouTube. He has 6.3M subscribers on YouTube. For reference, the ESPN youtube channel has 4.4M subscribers.

Today he uploaded a video titled: The NCAA Does Not Care About Student Athletes And Here's The Proof...

Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8r1lJVk7OI

There's nothing new in the video for frequent visitors to this site. But, points of interest:

  • The OSU/Meyer bit starts at 16:55 in the video.
  • Maryland/Durkin starts at 21:00
  • Jalen Rose (briefly) at 1:44

TLDR: The video argues the NCAA was founded to protect athletes despite recent statements by the NCAA implying it is not their job to protect athletes. As a result, athletes are subjected to abusive leaders at a disproportionately high level. DeFranco implies at the end that coaches, assistant coaches, athletic departments, local journalists and the NCAA are not attempting to fix the problem, so he is raising awareness. His suggestion is to create an independent investigative entity. Video ends with a long scrolling list of abusive coaches.

Well, wow.  I stayed awake to watch this and there is so much to unpack.

I've read that Roosevelt was determined no more player deaths would happen in pursuit of a game, and the NCAA was created with the aim of player safety.

Today?  Completely focused on brand management and profits.

Painful reminder of the preventable death that happened under Durkin's watch, and another player who died for no reason other than abuse.

In the last two minutes, briefly, the dots are connected between abusive programs and cheating programs.  That conclusion if true doesn't shock me.

Thanks for posting OP.

I was ready to call for the NCAA to be disbanded based on the halftime show of last night’s national championship game.

NCAA Administration is essentially like a bunch of ruthless CEOs of Fortune 500 companies

They don't care about the people beneath them. They don't care if rules are broken as long as its profitable. They only care about money

This is a really interesting video as Philly D has a huge following and is one of the most respected posters on YouTube.  Most YouTubers have always seemed to avoid sports, but it's nice to see a big-time name cover the topic.  Even better to see them throw slimy Urban under the bus

I have had a thought growing in the back of my mind for some time about how there will come a day when I won’t be able to watch college football. The idea that these kids are risking their future health for my entertainment and not being anything like properly compensated for it. That the NCAA does nothing substantive to protect these kids or ensure that they are truly taken care of down the line for the injuries they suffer playing this sport is repugnant. The NCAA is a cartel that launders advertiser money and clutches their fucking pearls about the pristine lily white virtue of amateurism.

I'm a bit surprised...just paged through all the comments...once again a slippery, slimy Dantonio slides through unscathed...even here!!! I fear for the well-being of the kids that innocently, unwittingly end up there-really I do.

I found one positive to take out of this and maybe it helps explain why Beilein consistently puts together teams that seem to overachieve. We all know how much of a stickler he is for fundamentals, but it seems he has a much more positive approach to his instruction than most coaches (if I'm wrong, I'm sorry). At around 14:48 of the video, they talk about how an improved mood broadens the perceptual field. Maybe all those squirt gun fights do more than just make us look good!

They say that teams take on the personality of their coaches-- and you won't find a finer person than John Beilein.  I watched his press conference after the IU win.  He was effusive about what a good team IU was-- and it wasn't fake coach speak.  He really did point out the good things the opposing team did and complimented the improvement their coach has made.  He thanked the reporters for coming and seemed genuinely happy to be there.

He gave all credit to the players, and noted that they were good young men and good students too.  He called them "low maintenance"  When asked how that happened he first credited their parents and then said "we recruit them like that."

He apparently has deep faith, but he isn't flashy and in anyone's face about it.  Bottom line, he is a good human being, he does things the right way.  (And it doesn't hurt that he really knows basketball either.)

Disclaimer: OSU fan here.

I just wanted to comment on the overall state of college athletics, especially football.

Title IX has been around for a while. I have no real issue with it. If a university has the resources to fund a wide range of men's and women's sports, go for it. OSU and UM fit that profile.

The issue I do have is the rapid rise in ticket prices for football games. For example, the face value of a ticket for the UM@OSU game was $190. Luckily my father is an OSU professor and has season tickets. But $190 for a cold bench seat in the nosebleed section in late November? Come on, man.

I don't know if it's that bad in Ann Arbor, but the trend is not positive. Either your team is a world-beater or you're going to lose a lot of season-ticket holders.
