[LOCKED] No JBB in the Peach Bowl

Submitted by WoodleyIsBeast on December 26th, 2018 at 11:29 AM

Some team pictures without him in Atlanta were leading to this, but now looks like JBB will not be playing in the Peach Bowl for sure.

Assuming Stueber starts at RT.  This now means Michigan will be without four starters on Saturday, exciting to see young talent prove themselves....

[edit:mgowill] locked because this is already coming off the rails.

Well look at it this way, these 5 will be our likely starters next year and we get a sneak preview. Plus plenty of bowl game reps the past few weeks.

Personally I want to see that Mayfield has made the jump and starts over Stueber. Mayfield seems like he has a significantly higher ceiling and more athletic. Mayfield looks like he could be a LT that fits more into the Lewan mold if he keeps progressing.

Listen, I don't mean this to come off as dickish, but JBB isn't getting drafted. He might make someone's squad as a UFA, but he should be there, unless he wasn't welcomed. He won't get invited to the combine, and he hasn't been invited to any post season pre draft games, and that's not a good sign for any senior with pro aspirations. He had a good senior season and even if he is injured he should be there. McCaffrey is there, and I bet he doesn't suit up. Unless there is something personal or team rules related, then I apologize, but the wording of the official team statement says he elected not to play. That's not cool.

He’s injured and not going may not have been a choice for him, let’s not go off to conclusions without actually knowing the story.  This has been an...interesting bowl prep session to be sure, but pulling an over-arching narrative for a specific case is probably not the best, more than likely he’s pulling a Bush vs. a Higdon.

Well, there we have it.  This makes perfect sense.  Sometimes the lack of info coming out of the AD makes things seem worse than they are (Gary’s situation for example).  That’s something that Harbaugh and the entire AD need to get better at.  I understand that you can’t tell your opponent things, but the lack of clarity paints these kids in a bad light at times, and I don’t believe that is fair.

I agree with this.

Big time college football is an artificial construct.  It exists only for entertainment purposes.  It has no inherent utility that civilization is relying on.

So that being said, unless there is a significant competitive disadvantage or violates the privacy of a college student, the AD should be transparent about everything.

There is no need to be evasive and secretive just for the sake of doing it.

Sometimes they get carried away.

"There is no need to be evasive and secretive just for the sake of doing it."

The Fort Schembechler mentality gets a little ridiculous, especially during bowl season. It's not like being excessively secretive about injuries has resulted in a spectacular bowl record over the last 40 years.

Why wouldn't the team issued statement just say JBB is injured and not playing? Dylan McCaffrey is injured and there. They went out of their way to tell us, he decided not to play. Not fair to the kid if he is indeed injured and cannot play.

Just no South Carolina repeat is all I ask, fanbase can probably handle a loss, two embarrassments in a row is going to fire up another offseason of pain that frankly, the program really doesn’t need.

JBB is not "sitting out".  He can't play.  There is a difference.

Given the new environment for bowl game avoidance, we should start being more clear.

The OP never says he's "sitting out", just that he won't be playing.

Baumgardner's report said that a team official said JBB has "elected not to play."  If you want to start being more clear, let's begin by using the actual words of the team official. No way they use those words if it was a medical issue.

Because sitting out CAN help his status. Taking the time to focus on individual development, getting stronger and getting into better shape to prepare for the combine/pro day is going to have a significantly larger impact on his draft stock than playing in a bowl game.

I really am ok w draft eligible players sitting the bowl game if they think it will help there draft stock and are afraid of injury! BUT I DO THINK THEY SHOULD BE THERE SUPPORTING THE TEAM! I was at the Vegas Bowl last week and there #1 WR Harry who is a monster by the way (hint hint Fantasy Guys) is skipping the bowl and he was there on the sideline rooting the team along, as was there LB and DLine man who chose to sit as well.

Just my take on this. Without the University you had no place to showcase your talents people. Remember that and if you choose to sit that’s fine but go and rootbon the team and your friends one last time!

It may, at some point, prove easier to list those who will be playing, instead of all the ones that won't, lol. Good problem to have, when your team has so many players considering the NFL, etc.

unless a team is in the playoffs,    i would much rather not see any player that is not going to be on next years team play. really, what is the point? make the bowl game like the first game for next year. now if non returning players want to participate, more power to them. if you only had returning players or players who felt they had something to prove, i would bet you would have a much better showing in these non playoff bowl games.

Ah yes, “i would much rather not see any player that is not going to be on next years team play” TOTALLY says we should kick all the seniors off the team.

I’m with him. The game doesn’t matter. I would much rather the practice and game reps go to a kid who is actually playing next year than an outgoing senior.

We get 15 additional practices. Would you honestly rather have JBB getting all of the first team reps in those practices or would you like someone like Stueber or Mayfield to be getting the bulk of those practice snaps? I’d much rather Aiden Hutchinson get reps with the 1s than Winovich.

Get those young guys all the reps they possibly can get. Improve. Get them ready for next season and the years to come.

If the seniors want to play, fine. But like him, I would much rather they didn’t.

This is getting FUCKING Ridiculous...I HATE this..making the bowl games utterly useless and pisses me off..paid good money for good tickets to watch a team thats not the same anymore?  This is another Selfish moves on players who dont care about the team or the fans...BOOOO

If JBB not playing makes you mad on how much you spent on a bowl game ticket-its on you. I am fine if he doesn't play. IF he is injured, why should he play? For a selfish fan that will rag on him for playing and missing a block.

Hahahaha this might be my favorite worst take on this site. Dude these players owe you nothing. They came here thinking it was the best bet to get high quality coaching & shot to get to the NFL. Lots of them even value the education.

These players spend 3-5 years getting prepped for the next step, 40+ hours a week trying to get better.

You think JBB owes you because you bought a ticket to the Peach Bowl?!? Get outta here with that. Whatever your dream career is/was, if 3 years into college that place called and offered you a huge salary I’m sure you would have dropped out to take the job.

College is all about prepping you for your dream career and life. NFL is that for football players.

JonnyHintz

December 26th, 2018 at 1:53 PM ^

First of all, bowl games are already useless. The fact that you decided to buy tickets is your own fault.

Second, these players owe you nothing. They play this game for free. You spend all the money you want, and they see none of it. They make a personal choice and it causes you to throw a hissy fit and THEY’RE selfish? Get the fuck out of here with that nonsense.

Grow up and quit crying.

Baumgardner's report said that JBB "elected not to play" in the Peach Bowl. That is not an injury.

I have no problem with guys sitting out a bowl game for injury or for the preservation of a high NFL draft slot, but this one seems like BS to me.  Football is the most quintessentially team sport, and dedication to your teammates (and coaches) is what makes it that way. Sounds to me like he is bailing on his fellow players.  I bet there are some pissed off guys in that locker room.

Sorry to thread jack, but I was wondering if anyone heard any rumors or anything about why McElwain was sitting out the bowl game? I don't remember hearing about any injury and he's not good enough for the NFL. It just seems weird that he would quit on the team.

Yawn at the faux outrage.

I guess when you've been chewing on your pound of flesh for 3 or 4 years, it's hard not to expect at least an ounce more.

Nothing wrong with these young men ending their "amateur" careers (lol) early, so sad you won't be able to buy a "Yeah we won the peach bowl" T-shirt.

One more win in our “most wins in college football” record would be great.

People who don't care if we win = the same people who hold it against JH for another lousy loss.....people who say let's play the young kids = the same people who scream when we make mistakes....let the coaches play whom they think are ready to play....they want to win and I'll wager they would not play someone whom they do not feel gives them the best opportunity to win. I am willing to presume that anyone we did not see in real game action during the regular season we will not see at any point in real game action in the bowl.

I'm going to sound like a fence sitter, but I can see both sides to sitting out a bowl game.

Part of me says finish what you started and help your team win its last game.

However...I can certainly understand not wanting to risk your future.

You got to wonder how much Jake Butts injury has influenced other players decision not to play.

I think JBB missing was overlooked in the OSU game.  Obviously not the reason we lost, but it seemed like they were getting consistent pressure around the right side of the line.  Reminded me of the Florida game last year.  Not an easy matchup for a first time starter.
