Grant Perry got in trouble, but UM stood by him. Internal investigation of Samuels' situation must have suggested to Warde/AD office that his behavior was unlikely to be meaningfully reduced in sentencing by judge.

I'm not sure where you draw the line on inappropriate behavior.  Grant Perry acted like a jerk, probably has some issues he needs to work on and I probably would have kicked him off the team. ...but his actions may have been out of character.    We don't have details on Samuels, but I've never seen a good reason to hit a woman.

Somebody once said, "The standard is Tony Boles, Tyrone Wheatley, Tim Biakabutuka, Anthony Thomas, Chris Perry, and Mike Hart."

He's right—Michigan recruited RBs far more effectively in the olden days right up through Lloyd Carr's tenure.

Per 247, here's the golden haul we use to be able to get to Michigan before the incompetence of Jim Harbaugh started destroying the program. It's just littered with All-Americans and All-Conference standouts:

1999: Brent Cummings, Jonathan Shaw, Fred Russell, Charles Drake, Brent Cummings, Ryan Beard, BJ Askew

2000: Chris Perry, Reggie Benton

2001: Kelly Baraka, David Underwood

2002: Pierre Rembert, Darnell Hood, Quintin McCoy

2003: Jerome Jackson, Anton Campbell

2004: Max Martin, Mike Hart

It's sad to reflect on the spectacular college and NFL careers of these recruits, and compare it to the miserable recruiting of the current staff. Right?

1999: Drake and Shaw both were moved to S and played/started.   Beard was very highly rated but was a bust.  Askew obviously was a stud

2000: Perry = stud.  Benton was a top 100 kid but never made it into school, grades.

2001: Baraka, 5 star who never made it into the team, pot.  Underwood, top 100 guy who busted.

2002: McCoy was a CB recruit, other two were pedestrian 3 stars.  Not good.

2003: some analysis was comparing Campbell to Gale Sayers, but other than that, another pedestrian class.

2004: we all know Mike Hart.

I see 3 studs recruited in 6 years.  So far Harbaugh has given us Higdon, who was good but no Perry or Hart.  I'm not in a panic over RB recruiting, but it , or development, could certainly be better.

In all fairness during that time span it was mostly Perry ('02 & '03) and Hart ('04 - '07) and before them A-Train, Howard for a few years, and before that Wheatley.  So they recruited an elite back to produce over 1,000 yards for the majority of 1992-2007.  So in my mind the starting RB for a solid tenure was typically better than what we've had post-Carr.  But, they also probably had a lot better o-lines to run behind as well, so there's that.  Charbonet looks like our first stud.  Hopefully he stays with his "commitment" and pans out to produce at the level of his recruiting profile.

By default we will have to throw the ball more next year due to not many competent RB. This is fine with me, but worrisome if there are injuries. Any other 19 prospects on the radar?

Looking forward:

get Charbonnet signed to LOI early.

start recruiting RB’s for 2020 early, along with 2021;

maintain good recruiting for OL, because the line leads the beast.

if necessary look for senior transfers or golden nuggets like Tru Wilson.
